Ronn Dunnett Interview-The George Way Drum Company
In this interview Ronn Dunnett recounts how and why he acquired the intellectual property and registered trademarks for The George Way Company. He also gives us a look into his plans for the future. The following two paragraphs are taken from The George Way Drum Company website:
On February 21st 1969 the world of drumming bid farewell to its most iconic and prolific product designers ever: George Harrison Way.
After his death the company remained dormant until 2006 when independent drum and percussion product designer Ronn Dunnett acquired the rights to the GHW and George Way Drum Company and shortly thereafter began work restoring the company and maintaining the Way legacy. In the years since that work began Dunnett and the George Way Drum Company stand as the only heritage brand to mount a successful relaunch. Ronn Dunnett's work in rebuilding the company and maintaining and expanding on George Way's innovations and dedication to quality and customer service mean that drummers are able to own and experience a genuine vintage look and sound combined seamlessly with modern manufacturing.

Thanks! I appreciate the positive feedback. My understanding is that the USA made drums still use Keller shells while the Taiwan made drums like the renown do not. Not sure now that GEWA has taken over DWs distribution of Gretsch, if this will remain the same going forward.

Can't ever go wrong with a 6-lug snare. They have some awesome tone. I've got a few WFL and Trans Badge 5.5x14's and a WFL 6.5x14 6-lug which is crazy good. The old Ludwig 1920's NOB 2-pc snares with 6-lugs are awesome as well and sound way bigger than they are. My 4x14 sounds like a 6x14 and my 6.5x14 sounds like an 8x14. They did something right back then!

I bet you didn’t know that the “round turret” tension casing Originally started life as a bracket for the bass drum shell mounted cymbal holder. It bolted to the top of the bass drum. it had one channel running through it, and the “L arm” that held a cymbal was attached to the turret, by means of a s”T”screw. Designed by GEORGE Way it is featured in the back of the 1952 or maybe it’s 1951 lead catalog the one with the orange color. @@eddieavakian : check out the “orange covered LEEDY catalog” from 1951 or 1952 I think and you’ll see the turret bracket shell mount cymbal holder. It’s a tiny little picture you’re blinking you won’t see it but it’s in there. I guess it was designed by GEORGE Way as a cymbal holder to be mounted on the bass drum shell! Keller is an awesome company, and they build very consistent shells, but they've had their share of undeserved bad press. There was a time when the phrase "Keller-shell kit" was practically a 4-letter word, denoting a cookie-cutter, amateur-built kit. In fact, DW's BEST drums were built during their Keller shell era, IMHO. In the early 2000's, when I was heavily involved in the drum industry, I was at NAMM, speaking to my good friend Joe Montineri, at the Keller booth about shell design and Keller quality. Joe was in charge of their R & D at the time, and helped develop VSS and the Vintage series. Our conversation was overheard by Keller President Dr. John Hudson, and when I got back to NY, he had already called me. To make a long story very short, Dr. Hudson hired me as an industry "spy" of sorts, to find out why Keller's reputation had negative connotations amongst drummers, and to attempt to dispel these unsubstantiated myths, so I was on the Keller payroll for almost two years. It has been great to observe how they bounced-back from that "dark era", and are still the Gold Standard amongst shell makers. They also did a line of Acrylic shells at one point, as well as carbon-fiber lined thin maple shells. They are NOT afraid to experiment! 💖

Have you ever tried the Mantra 22" ride? Every demo I've heard sounds incredible, I play rock and it's checks all the boxes for me. I've been a "Paiste guy" my whole drumming life (since '99) but brands don't matter, what my ears hear it what matters. Great videos, love them all! Thanks!

Hey Dale. I haven’t tried that one. I use mostly Agop myself but my buddy Blake who is in the video has all Sabian cymbals in his studio and I love playing them when I go there.

Took a tour of the Gretsch factory about a decade ago… Fred Gretsch actually purchased all the Jasper shell molds when they closed and was going to make their shells in house again. The machinery was just too old/rough to set up to get working, so they then partnered with Keller who built molds specifically for them to keep the specs the same (the classic 6 ply Gretsch shell is 1/16” larger than most other brands) I’m sure those machines are still sitting in the Gretsch drum factory to this day… that place is a hoarders paradise for all the different brands Gretsch owned and produced over the past 50+ years!

This guy is a genius. These kits and his snares all sound unreal. Please, 1 request, new lug design!!! Not nearly as bad DW turret turdy lugs. Amazing kits otherwise, but GW’s only bad idea

About 35 years ago, just for fun, I bought a thin maple Keller snare shell for like $40 with bearing edges and beds cut. Was a great experience, but after trying everything, I could never get it to sound how I wanted. I think went too thin, no re rings, trying to copy starclassics when they came out. Flawless shell, I’m redoing it now actually for the 3rd time, about to sand through the outer layer lol. Trying some new ideas to try to get it where I want it. About 5 years later, I built a 4 pc thin maple shell kit. It flooded in Katrina, still has mold stains in a few spots. Never delaminated, stayed round. Sanded mold off, treated it, stained it a little darker, they sound great. I had spent little money but now had a 100% maple kit. If you do buy shells, keep in mind all the drum companies get the lovely grain patterns so don’t expect a mind blowing pattern on all drums. Didn’t bother me. Started with die cast hoops but I hated them. Drums are BIG and still sound great. I built some RIMS mounts and Ft legs and brackets as well. Shells are good quality and must be really killer today. So many more options. Walnut is my next one! 2 gripes: BD hoops were a little flimsy. And the mahogany shells need some mahogany! I could build drums forever. Got 3 snares in the works, and one is 6mm carbon steel!!!

Rogers and Camco were hardware companies. They did not make shells.

True about the shells but I’d disagree on the characterization that they weren’t drum companies. They assembled all the drums, cut their own bearing edges, engineered throws off and snare systems, designed lugs and kit configurations, finish options and eventually had shells made to their specs. Gretsch used shells made by the same wood companies and they yet they sound very different.

One of my local drum shops here in Canada, has a used George Way aristocrat bop kit in natural maple gloss. The sound of the 18x14 blew me away at how huge it sounded, and can easily be tuned to sound like a 20x14 and possibly even tightly muffled 22x14. Beautiful looking and sounding drums..
