  • This late '50s Gretsch kit sounds warm, round, and earthy. The finish is Anniversary Sparkle and the sizes are 9x13, 14x20, 16x16. It has 3 ply shells, the silver sealer interior, round-bearing edges, and stick chopper hoops. There is some light processing done but the final result pretty closely represents the sound in the room.

The "round over" bearing edges on Gretsch drums gives them a wonderful sound. According to Gretsch:
    "30-Degree Bearing Edges (Vintage)
The 30-degree bearing edge is called the vintage edge because it was commonly used on vintage drums from the 1930’s onward. The 30-degree bearing edge has a rounded-over profile and is thicker than the sharper 45-degree bearing edge. There is more wood on the 30-degree edge. Because of this, there is more drum head contact with the solid drum shell. As a result, the sound is rounder and more focused. The shell still rings clearly and projection is still uncompromised, but the additional harmonics and excess ring are more contained. Also, the overall resonance is slightly suppressed and punchier.
Gretsch drums are finished with their vintage 30-degree bearing edge, angled toward the shell's interior."
This sound may not be suited for everybody, but it is my favorite my style of playing which is primarily low volume jazz. My "New Round Badge" edition of the Gretsch Catalina Club Jazz set makes it sound twice as big as it really is and yet, it projects the softest sounds at the lowest volumes. How does Gretsch manage to do this!
