  • No commentary version of a longer video. Playing a 1940 Leedy Broadway Standard snare drum, I document my first experience sourcing and playing a real calfskin head and then recording it against a Coated Remo Ambassador and an American Vintage Medium. The snare mic is an SM57 (top only), the overheads are two Neumann KM 184m and the room mic is an Audix CX212B.

LOL! I take it you're not a remo fan. They're all I use. I've tried to like Evans and just couldn't make that work for my ears.

Why no Evans? Just don't care for them, any reason why? Just curious. Thanks

I don’t personally like Evans but the reason I didn’t Include one is that I went with three most popular “oversized” vintage options suggested to me from a vintage drum Facebook group poll. Do you know which Evans head might fit? The drum is almost 14.5 inches

Aquarian vintage, Evans calftone, Remo fyberskin and skyntone...too many choices for a vintage sound...(Which one should I try? (I don't play with brushes).

Hey Rob. You can’t beat real calf for vintage but the Aquarian Vintage is really good for a fraction on the price. My 2nd pick would probably be Evans calf tone.

@@eddieavakian Aquarian vintage thin or medium?

@@robsco1249 the the thin will give you a more open sound. The one I used here was the medium because I thought that it sounded closer to the calf but the thin will give you more options since you can also use dampening to get it to sound more like the medium.
