Hey Y'all! We are Justin and Lil, plus four kids and one on the way. Just over a year ago, we moved our RV to 18 acres of raw land, built a solar power system and now are DIY building our Off-Grid house, together as a family.
In this video, we are Zipping along, on to the roof! We finish wrapping the biggest present we've ever had with bright green Zip sheathing and zip sheathing tape. Lil has been taking it easy with the Off-Grid Hkuse build due to morning sickness, but she is starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel, and felt well enough to help tape the Zip Sheathing a bit. She's been very "lazy" for the past few months, while struggling to keep water down, as she nurtures the latest addition to the Wild Berry Woods Homestead.
Our pier and beam foundation house is being built off the grid AND off the ground, so ladders are our best friend right now.
Justin goes to "The Lowe's" and buys more ladders in preparation for placing the ceiling joists. It's going to be tricky to get the joists up the walls by himself, but he has a solid plan: muscles and sheer will-power.
We take a peek under the house foundation for the first time in a while, and there's a whole ecosystem of funnel weaver spiders, roosters, and children coexisting amidst the floor joists and beams.
All in all, it's a wrap for Zip sheathing, and we are on to the ceiling joists!

Justin, you are fighting a losing battle! The wife is always right, it is Lowes
Rule 1= wife is right
Rule 2 = if any discrepancy- see Rule 1. 😅
😄 you can't blame a guy for trying!
@@DIY_or_DIE No blame for trying, just time consuming and you will still lose! LOL
You spoke of floor beams or something going up before the rafters, use your tractor, rather than your body. Your backhoe should reach with one end, then slide it across. I have even used a chain to 2 corners of the frontend loader bucket to lift a build roof of 7 feet by 16 feet and lifted it right into place on the side of a shed. My Tractor is a 30 year old compact 25 HP with just the loader, It is amazing what they can do with some preplanning.
Ceiling Joists, then ridge beam, then rafters
@@DIY_or_DIE Work smart, let your tractor do the work, easy enough to put a single metal pole in the bucket to lift with. 2 bolts through the bottom of the bucket and a single chain to the top of the bucket and it becomes a crane
Hi you’re making beautiful memories for your family you’re home will be Testment of your lives forever well done fantastic family xxx god bless ❤❤
Hi there, thanks for joining us 😊 God bless you!
Justin whatever she says it is, it is brother, I've been married for over 40 years and I'll tell you for a happy home she is always right LOL. God Bless from your Canadian Friend.
Wise advice, thanks brother 😄
The best kitty
Which one?
Can't ever have enough ladders!! Happy wife happy life!! ( Lowes) You really have to learn to pick your battles!! Lol!! Have a great day kids!! Can't wait to see the roof go on!! Metal roof?
Hah, I acquired two more this week...I think I might have a problem 😅 also, Lil pretty much unanimously wins this debate lol we are planning for metal roof
We did one several years ago, love it!!! It's the way to go!!
However you want to say it, that's fine, she's correct. Congrats in the upcoming new baby. House looking good, be careful putting up the top build. Keep cool!!
Been watching, just decided to comment. 😊👍👍
Haha, I see you are a man of wisdom 😄 thanks for the comment!
@@DIY_or_DIE you are welcome
That peach tree is gonna have nice ones too
We sure hope so!
Moving forward is always the best. Regardless of what she says, you will learn that she is always right.
As to your question as to how many ladders you need, the answer is you will never have enough.
God bless your family.
100% agree on the ladders.
Nice property fenced around with the nails
Thats gonna be a awesome house
The kids are so creative 😄 but I'm worried about the tractor...
@@DIY_or_DIE 😂🤣
Women are always right! (Lowes). Don't mean this as a 'mean' comment but I live in Southern Oregon, the land of forest fires every summer and much discussion / education on fire defense. A couple of years ago we hundreds of homes lost in our area (Ashland, Talent, Phoenix). At ~7:00 in the vid you do a drone shot and I can't help but see all the trees right up to and around you're home - no defenses from fire risk. You might want to research fire issues / fire defenses and see what you think.
Another win for Lil 😄 yikes, that is very unfortunate for those poor people who lost their homes!
Just remember a happy wife is a happy Life! But you guy's are doing a great Job. and it is going to Lowes...
Thanks for joining us 😊
Liked the update. Excited when rafter go up.
Thanks, not much longer!
@@DIY_or_DIE so enjoy your videos. Look forward to them each week.
We appreciate your support! Things are just going to get more exciting with each phase of the build 😊
Justin I like the lows because it makes it yours ❤❤ you be you !
Justin says thanks for the support 😄
I have to agree with the misses, I'm going to Lowes. Love you channel.
Haha, you and everyone else! Thanks for joining us 😊
The wife is always right!
Always?
General order # 1.. the wife is always right.
Haha, sage advice for any man 😄
Looks great, along just nice!!
Thanks!
I reference it as “ Lowe’s “. Remember “ Happy wife, Happy Life “!
Haha, sage advice
Tell your son I like the bent nail fortress . I knew you had another builder in the family .
😄 will let him know. It will be great until we have to run the tractor to that side of the house...😅
Wife is right!!!!!
Of course she is 😄
I’m from England and we done have lowes but even I know the lady is right , it’s going to lowes sorry Justin , love your channel
Haha, no worries, thanks for joining us from England!
he needs a wide brim straw hat
This little boy is a cutie pie , ❤,
Thanks! He sure is ❤️
It is just Lowes. Let's go to Lowes, we went to Lowes, got it at Lowes, yeah sounds right. Allez dans les Lowes? Adding the article sounds good in French
Well we say going to "The" store? Why not "The" Lowes? 😄
@@DIY_or_DIE Because it just doesn't sound right. I'm going to the lumber store sounds good. You were in the Navy, You wouldn't say I was in Navy. Brits leave "The" off of Hospital and University "He's in Hospital" "He's at University" It's just the English language it is all messed up
hi from the UK I just like your videos all the best with your build.
Thank you!
Happy wife happy life
😄
I would go with going to "the
Lowes" like going to the library the council the pharmacy etc. However we use British english here. Either way message is clear as to the destination...lol
You are the first person that his even given Justin some sort of credit... he says you are welcome to comment any time 😄
The lowe's.😂 My husband and I belt a cat house for our cat ❤
Better be careful...that's exactly how it starts...and before you know it you are living off grid, trying to DIY everything, and building a whole house 🤣
@DIY_or_DIE We are in Ellijay, Georgia. Where are you
Oh Elijay is beautiful. We originally wanted to be somewhere in your area! We are further south.
Well from me and my husband We want to say hello neighbor. God bless
God bless you guys, and thanks for joining us 😊
haha it's "LOWES". LIL WINS!!!
Haha, no surprise there 🤣
gretyat job
❤️
Going to Lowes
Another one for Lil 😄
We call our stores Home Despot, SLOWES, and Hobo Freight.
Haha! I like Hobo Freight 😆
Going to Lowe’s, she’s right.
Yes, yes, she is. Apparently this one is almost unanimous 😄
Stay safe in the heat.
The extra "toys" will serve you VERY well.
Thank you!
Going to Lowe's. 😀
😀
lowes the lowes is past tense
It's always been just Lowes 😂
No way, for real? 😂
@@DIY_or_DIE 😆
I was this day old when I learned that it's just going to lowes...😄
Going to Lowe's.
Or I'm going to the Blue store or I'm going to Orange store. Lol 😂
Haha, team orange or team blue?
Team Orange right now 😄
Haha, for now???
It's called Aces
😆
It's "Going to Lowe's" as Lowe's is a proper name.
But, what is it is "The" Lowes?
"The Lows" are what you are going to experience if she isnt right ;-)
I think UA-cam has unanimously agreed that Lil is right 😄
😂😂😂we go to "The Walmart" 😂😂😂
the way u having dese babies u need to add another story to dis house !!!
Don't worry, Justin is already planning a two story addition to add on after we finish this build 😄
Sorry bro, she’s right. Ya just say going to Lowe’s.
As an employee of Lowe's, I can tell you it's "Going to Lowe's"
Guess we can't argue with the expert opinion!
@@axelruntschke 👎 boooo
😄
I'm going to Lowe's
"The"
Justin, we go to Lowe’s. 😁
Or do we go to "The" Lowes? 😄
@@DIY_or_DIE I think Team Lil wins this one. 😁 Praying for y’all.
Haha, yes, I think UA-cam has unanimously agreed that Lil wins this one 😄
The wife is definitely right
Of course, she always is 😄
Hey all, thanks for sharing the next update. Good to see Leo feeling better and back in the build! Justin, you should know by now that your good lady is always right! Sounds like you have a plan for getting roof timbers up and in place, hopefully works as planned when you give it a go, we shall see I guess. Take care in the heat and stay safe all 🙂
Leo appreciates this comment!
Even up here in Ontario, Canada, it is Lowes. Lil is right!
Haha, big surprise there 🤣
We're going to the Lowe's
I like the use or "The" in that comment.
I watch 2 other channels from Tn. They say The on all stores. Makes me laugh. The walmart, the hobbylobby, the kroger....Lil is correct tho. Lol
What channels are they? I wonder if it is a regional thing!
@@DIY_or_DIE fearfully creative and Amanda Payne
We'll have to check them out, thanks!
@@DIY_or_DIE you're welcome! I'm thinking its a regional thing but idk.
Yall remind me of another couple Ive followed a long time, building their home, wild wonderful off grid. Another fav is I.A.G. farms.
Haha, that's so funny because we are huge Josh and Erin fans! Justin routinely wears their shirt while building 🤣 haven't heard of I.A.G farms though, will have to check them out.
Going to Lowes, sry !
😁
Going to Lows
😁
In michigan it's Lowes..
Well, maybe it's different in Florida 🤷♂️
@@DIY_or_DIE it is what you want.. I will drink my vernors to that
🍺
I go to Da Lowes 😅
Haha, that sounds right 😄
Lowes
"The" 😄
Home depot prices are lower where I live
We have a bit of a drive to either, so we go to whichever is closer usually 😀
If your hot when I did moto cross races as a Emt. We would put were cold wet hand towels under our hat it keep us cool.
That is a great idea, will be trying that 😀
what type of roof yall putting up? metal? if metal rain collection will super easy
Planning for metal!
Well first if you watch or listen to the Commercials you will notice that they say Lowe's, not the Lowe's and 2 you do not ever question the wife in public
Hmmm, I've never heard a lowes commercial, but I'm not surprised that they got it wrong 😄
Just Lowes
But, "The" sounds so much better
Lowe's
👍
How can you have 4.5 children and not have learned Lil is always correct. 😊
Well, she was wrong on Longitudinally!
Sorry Justin…..Lil is right! 😂
Haha, chalk this one up as a win for Lil 😄
Will you be building a garage or branan next?
Might need to build an addition to the house by the time we finish this build 😄
But I think we need a barn for the homestead
Lil got jokes,thanks y'all
Haha, Lil has always had the best sense of humor...she balances out Justin's tendency to be too serious 🤣
Just Lowe's.
👌
😄
Question: Why are you putting your rafters on 16 inch centers? They're typically on 24 inch centers down here since we don't have to worry about Snow Load.
Just going by the ceiling joists span tables in the IRC 🤷♂️ 16 O.C. was good for a 15' span with #2 prime 2x8s
@DIY_or_DIE those double top plates allow for you to do rafters on 24 inch centers. Each rafter does not have to sit on top of a wall stud.
@axelruntschke I get the no snow load, but what do you use for live and dead load when sizing the ceiling joist and rafters? I probably overdesigned it a bit 😄
@DIY_or_DIE Live and Dead Load is more for your subfloor. Dead load being the weight of your flooring, cabinets, interior walls, and furniture. Dead load rarely changes, unless you rearrange your furniture, but even that is pretty minor of a difference.
Live load is the weight of you and your family and guests. Always moving around, causing minor movements in your subfloor, even smaller ones in your floor joists, and even down to your pillars (microscopic at that point), but Movement nonetheless.
When it comes to your roof (down here in the south), your trusses or rafters only have to hold up the weight of your roof sheathing and shingles or metal. Also wind load. Trusses and rafters are more than capable of handling that load on a 24 inch center. Use 7/16 or 1/2 sheathing, and use plywood clips in the middle of each span. Add your underlayment (tar paper or Ice and Water Shield), and shingles or metal panels. Done deal. You'll save a bunch by going with 24 inch on center.
Also, your ceiling joists are fine at 24 inches on center. Just use 5/8 inch drywall for the ceiling, and 1/2 inch for the walls. Install ceiling drywall first, followed by walls. Use 1/2 inch spacers under the wall panels to keep them up off the ground a bit. Helps in case you ever have a flooding situation in your house (like a burst pipe of washing mashine issue) so the water won't soak up into your drywall.
It's called your "second home"....not Lowes. Ha😂😂😂. Glad you got some good toys...I mean tools. Safety first. Looking forward to this phase. You will be taping in your nightmares. Ugh
Haha, isn't that the truth! And I acquired two more ladders this week so the collection is growing 😄 this taping wasn't too bad...it's drywall taping that I'm not looking forward to.
@DIY_or_DIE oh boy. You aren't a kidding. When we built, I chickened out and hired a guy to do it in the evenings and weekends. We still have him do odd jobs for us nearly 30 years later. He has said our new house job just about killed him.
Oh boy, sounds like he still has nightmares about the taping 😂 well we are planning to do it ourselves, so we will see how it goes. Fortunately we have a lot of other things to do first before we get to drywall 😄
@DIY_or_DIE you can do it!!!! Just depends on your schedule and patience. You got this 👍
Go to Lowe’s
"The" 😄
Lil is correct its just Lowes.
Of course she is correct 😄
She's right. Its not "The Lowes", its just Lowes.
I'm not telling her, she'll never let me live it down
Lil is right
I think you might be right!
It is just LOWES
Hah, another score for Lil 😄
Sorry Justin, it's Lowe's.
yes yes, pretty much all of youtube agrees that Lil is right 😄
Two more ladders & one more scaffold will make your job go a lot easier , and then they go up for resale .Also I need your P.O. Box to send you some help with full name.
Don't worry, we have plenty of projects planned for the future even after the house is finished 😄 also, we don't have a P.O. box yet...will work on that!
time to do electrical and plumbing
Almost!
So I got ask, where are you folks building at? I don’t need the exact address just wondering really
We are in Southeast Georgia!
Hmm...where`s the ridge beam/board?
Stay tuned to see 🙂
It’s going to Lowe’s, never “the Lowe’s” I guess the only reason you could use the word “The” an example, “Yes I bought that at Lowe’s, You know the Lowe’s over on Main Street” but this example is a stretch 😊
Haha, this was a clear win for Lil 😂
Well Leo I’m sorry to say but it’s just Lowe’s
😄
It’s “Lowe’s”. Sorry 😊
Don't be sorry, Lil was right 😀
It's Lowe's not The Lowe's
Score for Lil 😄
What are you having this time if I my ask and do you have names for the baby
We are choosing not to find out the sex, and potential names are top secret 😉
Rule # 1. The wife is always right.
Rule # 2. If the wife is wrong, refer to rule # 1.
40 years of marriage and this has always been true.
Hah, so that is the key to staying married, eh?
Lil is right. She's your wife and pregnant. You didn't have a chance.
This is true!
Do you go to The McDonalds ?
Never.
Naw y'all your wife isn't always right but when you're wrong quickly admit and do better next time cause those times will come again and not always does anyone need to be right a simple discussion is all sorry just saw so many comments
Haha, well Lil for sure wins this debate, it's pretty much unanimous 😄
Lowes.
Even I know that in NZ Justin, I must watch too much UA-cam.
Haha! Looks like most of the comments are leaning to Lowe's and not The Lowe's.
Going to Lowes
"The" 😄
Looks great, along just nice!!
❤️
Lowes
You forgot the "the" 😄
