    Now you dont have the hex tablets, the stove shape is redundant, why not get one of those tiny twig stoves that are flat sheets of metal as your support and have something like a boot polish tin as the gel fire holder, you could use the twig stove with twigs when its appropriate. I think some people are annoyed by signs of human activity when they go walking in woodland, thats why they knocked down your shelter but didnt destroy it, its maybe a message of "you can do this, but take it down when you finish so its not an eyesore, then fix it back up as required, like a tent"

    • @hiddenvalleyfootpaths2561
      @hiddenvalleyfootpaths2561 2 дні тому

      Hi, fantastic idea about shoe polish tin. There is a small hamlet at the entrance to this wood but I know all the people as its my local woodland so it's not the general public. This woodland has no carparks for any visitor's, and it's Miles down old County roads. It's own by one of the largest land owners in the UK and hunting community use it regularly. Signs go up when they are conducting shooting. It's more likely a recce for shooting that done it I would guess. Many thanks for watching and commenting. Like the stove idea will make soon.Andy.

    Great wee video, keeping it straight forward and simple. Don't fancy getting out of my bag a for a few toilet breaks if it takes 10 minutes to get sorted again once I'm back in the bag, but you proved the modular system is doable and it will keep you warm on a cold night. Nice one, I’m a Cornishman living “up the line” in Gloucestershire, we had a bit of snow too, but only about an inch or two, and then cycled through sleet, more snow and freezing rain during the day but it didn’t hang around for long. I’m an ex Falmouth boy so it was always a novelty getting snow when I was growing up, I’m 50 now and it still gets me excited 😂. I have some nice hills and high ground in the edge of the Cotswolds just behind my house, I usually go for a long night walk when we get snow, there’s something nice about wandering around in the dark when everything is white. I missed my chance this time as it arrived early in the morning, but I’ll definitely get out there if we get more later in the season. The last time we had snow in November was around 2010, and we had lots of snow and record lows that winter so fingers crossed, I may even take some sleeping kit.

    A tip I learned as a nipper working in wellies in an always-wet open-to-outdoors factory in freezing temps is both simple and effective... thin Inner socks, thick wool outer socks plus a magic ingredient: a plastic shopping bag over the socks. Obviously avoid sweating up while using them, but when temps drop to UK minimums then they do help.

In fact, when I tried, it had virtually no give. Preferably, yes, grain up and down .it did add some fantastic visual features, though. Oh this is a working crock and is used every day on the farm. Hi, I thought I recognised your accent, I’m also Cornish but moved “up the line” 30 years ago 😂. Quick question, can you heat shape green (freshly cut) hazel? I’m making a stick and was thinking about using it for the next year while some other better sticks I have are drying out. If I fit a copper tip now, will it cause any problems later when it dries out? I was going to epoxy it on. Cheers

    • @hiddenvalleyfootpaths2561
      @hiddenvalleyfootpaths2561 6 днів тому

      You can heat up greenwood and straighten it, but as it dries out there is a chance it will reform new curves and bends due to shrinking of the wood. My accent is sometimes strong and I miss words out of sentences that can be infuriating to some people. As you know, once you get a couple of southwest accent people together, it only becomes stronger...lol. They say even if you move away from Cornwall, you never really leave Cornwall in your heart and soul. I hope you are enjoying your time up north and happy crafting. Hi, thanks for watching and commenting. I sell spare capacity on Ebay, but most of my work is from customers contacting me through my Facebook page (folklore hiking and country walking sticks).The Goggle search engine has our Web page and details also and I think we are number one or two in the listing for cornish sticks. Word of mouth has given me plenty of work also. Really appreciate your support by watching the channel. Andy.

    Hi Andy, yes it's pretty brisk here, the fire has been on non-stop for the last 4 days. I must get my chain saws sharpened and checked over as we're going through logs at an alarming rate. I've got 3 mobility sticks to get on with before Christmas, all different and needing different techniques, one is going to be an absolute pain. After that I've got an order of 2 beakers and 2 large candle holders to turn for a Christmas fare on 25th. When I have a chance 🙄I'm working on ideas for a couple of sticks for myself, it's not that I haven't got enough sticks of all shapes and sizes as it is, I think it's an obsession.

    Andy, please dont lean over the bar with you head and neck because if if it jumps it will hit you and that is not a good look. Stand to the side of the saw so if it does jump it will go over your shoulder. In other words if when working you are looking along the bar you are in the wrong position. To be fair it could have been the angle of the camera but if not consider what how you stand. Take it from mee you will be uable to work for a lot longer that with recent incident with your drill. As a qualified Tree Surgeon who has spent many years using chain saws I have witnessed all sorts of injuries and no matter how confident and proficient you feel you need to always ready for the unthinkable. As for sharpening it will be impossible to keep as sharp as out of the box as cutters become smaller with each fileing. Cheers😊

      Hi, thanks for your advice. After your comment, I watched myself again and realised you were correct. I was too in-line with any potential kickback. After 55 year's of being safety conscious, I was gutted to pick up a serious injury just from a drill because I let my mind wander off. As you can see thank god I don't have to do tree surgery for a living. I use my chainsaw to clear out small saplings if asked before I am allowed to get my sticks and staves so nothing big or serious. Much appreciate your advice. Thanks for watching and commenting. Andy.

    Hiya Andy, bit random I know but have you ever made a tobacco pipe ?i don't imagine you smoke but just a thought. I would love a pipe with your type of creative art. Be great to hear from you. Stay safe and don't forget your goggles. 😄😅.

      Hi, I have never made a pipe at all. My dad, while he was in the navy did and I remember the old navy gold and olive green tobacco tins the navy supplied them with. I do see the odd gentleman with one and occasional young person at bushcraft events. Infact I have seen the odd chanel on UA-cam with pipes as the main content. Sorry I can't help but appreciate your comment and watching the videos. Andy.

    Hi Andy, just want to thank you for inspiring me to pick up on a past interest in spoon making and other whittling past times. Watching you has given me the motivation to go into the woods and cut some sticks to work on next winter. Really enjoy the easy going nature of your channel and insight into how to work on projects with minimal tools. Have a good Christmas and New Year.

      Hi, yeah its busy and I have to be better at managing my time. Pottering around in my normal style sometimes just does not cut it when things need doing fast or it's a matter of volume. Thanks for watching and commenting. Andy.

    If there was suitable trees you could use a ridge line to hold tent up and do away with the tent pole give you some more room inside love the dpm basha quality bit of brit kit mine has served me well 👍

      Hi, you're very much correct. The army bashan is a great piece of kit. I have used it in the army and also as I do now. I am not sure about tree coverage on certain parts of the West Highland way, so was trying to get a ground floor option. As you have pointed out a tree option would be way better. Appreciate the comments and watching. Andy.

    Taking the piss but you can buy cold steel fighting sticks with no problem! When yours is clearly not meant to be a weapon 🙄
