Why did Softcore Fail? (Rust)
In February 2021, Facepunch Studios released a new game mode for their survival game Rust they called Softcore following a large amount of controversy that came packaged with a massive spike in popularity. The idea was for those upset with the game's immense difficulty and time/energy demands to play on softcore where their issues would be largely watered down while still maintaining pvp in the experience unlike pve servers.
Almost 4 years later, and it has become apparent that this idea has likely not met the desired outcome with most servers using the game mode not reaching anywhere near the player counts vanilla servers see.
In this video, I explore all the changes the Softcore gamemode makes to the Rust experience. I take a look at how it effects raiding, PVP, the Reclaim Terminal, and more! I explain why these changes have not made players happy, and how I intend to use the Softcore game mode in a way that will in the server I am planning on creating! I also briefly talk about the Hardcore gamemode, but not in as much detail.

So this video was basically to promote your own rust softcore server and how 'good' it will be compared to the other rust softcore servers?
Well, it’s part of a series, but yes the goal of it is to advertise my upcoming server so it doesn’t launch with a 0 pop. Given that a hosting service will cost me real money, I believe it is reasonable to ensure that if I were to launch a Rust server, people would actually play it.
If you are interested in playing on my Rust server, I strongly recommend that you subscribe to the channel so you will be notified of its launch (and so I can see there's support for the project).
As somebody that does play on softcore I have over 2000 hours and I plan on the servers because my life gets busy outside of rust and there are many other people that play on these types of servers that have way more than 2000 hours. We plan on the servers, because we actually have other things that we need to take care of the life, jobs school and more, but we still want to play the game. Not having to put in all the time and hours with all the same aspects. That made rust fun at the beginning. I did plan on official service, and I did really love it, but sometimes life doesn’t always go as planned. And you just have to stop for a bit, but you also just wanna keep playing, so these servers are good for that as well as teaching, new players to play
End of wipe should have the raid block off, if the server is going to wipe then what is the point of keeping your base? I would love to check it out when it goes online although I have to agree with @dinoonrr3784 though, the thrill of raiding is the profit, if the server gets reverted and you lose all the profit then what was the point? No one would ever farm for rockets. Also what if I was new and built a base during purge? Would my base disappear? Would my loot?

with 100% inventory saved, whats stopping someone from grabbing that heli crate when your not looking and you never being able to get it back. also whats the point of having raiding days if the server is going to be reverted, the thrill of raiding comes from the possible profit you can make, but without that whats the incentive?
Both very good questions. Yeah it is going to suck having scenarios like that happening where you sneak your way past the player to yoink the crate without them being able to fight for it back. If I were to make my own survival game, I would solve this problem by implementing a Reclaim Timer where items in your inventory won't get reclaimed until X minutes of being in your inventory. However, because this is a Rust server I'm planning, I will have to work within the limitations of what Rust allows me to do. Unless someone comes up with a magical plugin, the only thing really stopping such scenarios would be your situational awareness. I do not agree that the ONLY thrill of raiding is the profit you gain from it. The sheer enjoyment of the raiding experience itself is enough in my opinion to make it worthwhile; that's why some people enjoy playing Rust Bedwars. Think about it. Why does making a profit after raiding feel so thrilling? It's because that profit enables you to do more cool stuff. Though I will admit making a profit does add an extra layer of excitement, which would be lost in my proposed system. As a compromise, I could have some purges where I don't turn it off. For example, if it were a weekly server, with wipe day on Sunday, I could have a purge period every night where it resets afterwards as described, but on Sunday, Wednesday, and Saturday, it won't reset.
I sometimes think Rust has no right being as popular as it is, it truely is a mystery. Players will queue up for an hour (or pay a subscription) to get on some bloated, laggy, overpopulated server which you just know is going to be full of Cheaters and people who should not be let near the Internet without supervision. The lack of game balance is obvious, a few servers get the majority of Players. And a couple of days after Wipe Day the landscape is littered with abandoned and decaying bases.
One change I would like to see is Players are sent back to the Spawn Beach if they die. Respawing nearby is a curse and makes Rust NOT a survival game in my opinion.
@@jitteryjet7525 Im sorry but this idea is terrible. It would nerf solo players and small group sizes even more than what the combat update did. This would encourage even more doorcamping and roofcamping. The game is filled with players who refuse to or barely leave their base but the no bags idea would make it so much worse. Spawn beach would be FILLED with bases, no one would explore the map.
@@Zach-qd6pp You are proving my point, something has gone wrong with Rust if it is full of no-lifers who don't leave their bases. If you want to visit Monuments you will have to take a risk. Really my point is Rust cannot be called a Survival game if it has resurrection. So my idea of a vanilla server is respawn at the beach. Fortnite-type combat with resurrection can be an option on Combat servers.
I would love an SCP multiplayer game to have unique ways to contain every (playable) SCP. The femur breaker for 106, putting a bag onto 096, trapping 173 in a cage of some sort.
Why is there no special way to contain scp 096 like 106 had or 079 has like a way stun it or something like that by an micro instead of killing it so you can put a bag on its head i think all scp except 939 and maybe 049 should have that

I like how all the zones now have a disadvantage to camping them: LCZ has decontamination Heavy has open hallways Entrance has windows on doors Surface has.... uhh... So yeah, all zones (except surface) have some disadvantage to camping.

It’s in beta. You have to change the version in your game settings on Steam. Or you just wait for the whole update.

A great video all around! You made some very valuable points and the most valuable being SCP's open ended license. I think you creating your own vision of an SCP game would be as fun of an experience as SL, how certain aspects have been left up to reader's interperetation make SCPs special, and I'd be interested in another perspectiv of SCP gameplay. While I wouldn't say the femur breaker was a beloved feature, I never thought about the fact that there are so little Special Containment procedures in the game, and now I can understand why someone might feel bummed about its removal. I'm a sucker for individual SCP experiences, and I can't wait to see what you cook up. Keep up the good work!

The reason I don't play Online open-world games much is because of the Online open-world players - these sort of games attract the worst. Call me old fashioned but having some Squeaker screaming nasty things about my dead mother is not my idea of a good time. Rust well considering Admins don't play it anymore because of the large number of Cheaters with Mod Menus tells you all you need to know.
I play PVE and prefer it. I don't get to play too much. But the server I play is vanilla, so you still have to work for everything.
i'm from pve rust and love plugins and customizations some servers have found one that im playing religiously for like 1,5 year and on server have close 20+ ppl daily on waip up to 70 and i love it

I don't like PVE in rust its to boring I don't like Roleplayers for the rules Rust for me is anarchy I want to shot whenever i can etc i want to raid etc i want to doorcamp if i need to I mainly play Vanilla beacus thats the rust I like I also completly hate the softcore , Not being able to loot an for example an ak beacus the guy can keep it at outpost it tragedy to me

Because it’s boring. Like playing Minecraft on peaceful but x10. Rust is high risk high reward game so when you take that away, No risk at all makes it not fun to obtain the reward.
because rust is very sterile on pve side. all monuments need to be populated with npcs and events should be more frequent.
personally i think the rust route is more plausible but making a whole new game has more room to progress as a dev

Exactly! Raiding only allowed between 15:00 - 23:00. That means ppl will be in the open worl a lot more as well
@@butleredwin I'm actually playing on the rusty workers server right now, and it's for people who actually have real lives and jobs, very narrow raid windows and only one raid allowed per day.
@gymkhanadog what are the pops like? I play the working class. Solo server has like 13 people and duo server is usually empty.
@@ActionRan The Problem there is time difference....i have players from Canada, UK and a couple from Japan,...But i've found that most PVE players aren't there to Raid, they just want to play/build in their own time.
Yea , there is no conflict from other players. It's a good opportunity for noobs to learn the game in fairly safe environment but that's about it
This one server I was trying out actually had PvP in Monuments and specific areas, and also a Purge Day 2 days before every wipe. Its a great idea I just wish it was more popular.

Although rust definitely has a negative reputation around its player base it is a really good starting off point for creating many different experiences. ( coming from someone who has previously owned and operated a server). Something that I personally believe would also have a lot of potential and maybe a broader audience would be creating a game within Fortnite using unreal engine or creating an experience in Roblox ( which you can charge money for). Both of which would require no server upkeep costs and have large communities around them that can help you achieve the experience you want. Both also have built in graphics that are way batter than the clips of your own game that you see there, they both have integrated voice chat ( something very important to the rust experience), and both aren’t too difficult to learn.
As a PvE player myself, I know the unmet potential of a finely tuned rust server, so for selfish reasons, I vote rust server.

I think the main complaint against BDSP (other than it looking and playing like complete garbage) was that it was TOO faithful to diamond and pearl, and disregarded platinum (the agreed upon superior version of the game). Plus, i think if u liked palworld, you should try out legends arceus, that is if you end up getting a switch. The point abt you not wanting to buy a switch to play the known to be bad pokemon games, i totally agree with you on that. Thats kinda why i bought a 3ds and im replaying every pokemon generation (up until gen 7 ofc)

Not right now. This video is a reupload from over a year ago. I'm working on the script for the "PVE Video" right now to give this series one last shot. Even if I end up deciding not to run a server, I will still likely use the elements from these videos to influence the development of my own games in the Godot Engine. We'll see how well this and next video does.

Yeah, I'm aware of that. Spent a lot of my childhood playing them. My main gripe with it is the wasted potential to be something better that it absolutely had. The video I linked gives examples. I didn't get into it here because it would have tripled the length of the video, and therefore triple the time it'd take for me to get it finished.
