An S18 EUC ride in Truro, Cornwall - May 2024
What a faff putting on all the gear , sorting camera's charging batteries. It's worth it, but you still have to be organised. This video explores the problem using my latest ride around Truro.

This ride in the planning for some time (I've Christened it the Helford Loop) takes me into some of the most rural places in my area, most of the roads are single track, some very narrow, some unmarked. This ride takes me places many would be hesitant to drive their cars, extremely pretty, off the beaten track and increasingly rare in these modern days. When I say this is raw footage I kid you ...

This was a trip into Truro on some errands. As usual I used the car but did the last mile on the Ninebot One E , saves on parking charges and is much more fun. I also did some exploring along the Newham Trail going towards Hightown. That proved to be a success so I will go further down there next time. The rest of the video is my waffle I'm afraid, but what can you do :-)

    I don't have one of these,but it looks fun. Am I correct in thinking it can't be that hard to learn,just keep your balance in the middle,like a bike?

    • @Roskellan
      @Roskellan Місяць тому

      I can't in all honesty say it was easy to learn, not for me anyway. More difficult than a bicycle I would say. An EUC is stable front to back but as you said you have to be moving to balance side to side. Time on the machine is the trick, right at the beginning its exhausting so little and often. An EUC doesn't give much away. if you want to do something you will have to practice it. Mounting the thing, braking, inclines up and down, tight turns, bumps, kerbs, uneven surfaces I'm stubborn as mule so I wasn't going to be beaten. I'm doing 30 mile rides now I could not even imagine ever being able to do that while I was learning (I'm still learning). It is hugely rewarding, good exercise and surprising practical at times, delivering, picking up the car from the MOT for example. You will fall off, but that is less than a big deal than you might have thought. Standing upright traversing your local area, paths and bridal ways, is very comfortable, not tiring and a very natural stance, leaving your arms and hands completely free of course. Highly recommended.

    • @Roskellan
      @Roskellan Місяць тому

      60 is far from too old. But which wheel? You could potentially learn on any of them (I really wouldn't recommend the Master) but you will find it much easier say on the Ninebot or even the 16X. And neither of these are training wheels. I ride all mine - its a question of horses for courses. Of course you will fall off, over and over. Sometimes you will come off still on your feet, and sometimes not. What surprised me even at my ripe old age I seldom hurt myself and then not badly, was going very slow you understand. I think being older than many you see on UA-cam, you are not going to be pulling off some of the antics you will see there and your training curve will be longer, but hey the kids cant have all the fun. And learning on the S18, higher foot plates than my 16X, bigger heavier than my Ninebot but sure just a bit more difficult - you could certainly do worse.

    Hello. Until what voltage is it save to ride the one E+ ? I bought a secondhand this week, and the app says the battery is 61 V when 100% charged. When it’s around 60% the voltage dropped to 58V.

    • @Roskellan
      @Roskellan 4 місяці тому

      The Ninebot One E+ Battery is 320Whr 15S2P. Assuming 4.2V/cell to be fully charged, that would be 63V and 0% charge (3V/cell) being flat would be 45V overall. 50% charge would be around 57.3V time to go home :-) 61V I would say was 90% but that's OK.

      They work very well, particularly because they don't get slippery with mud like the OEM footplates. One problem is that the nylon is hydroscopic which means they have a bit more give now, like suspension which is good but it also means the angle is now a bit too low. I need to recad them with the footplate angle more elevated, maybe another 10 degrees or so. Just haven't got around to doing this.

    I’m 58 and started riding EUC’s around 5 months ago. I’ve been riding e-skateboards for 3 years. It’s great to hear an older rider’s perspective which is really helpful for those who are older and just discovered EUC riding. I started with a $600 Mten4 300wh. Light and not too expensive. Low pedals and not having to worry too much about bashing it made it a great starter wheel but the smaller diameter didn’t make the transition feel to standard EUC’s which are usually 16-18” as natural as it should. I think the Kingsong 16S or Inmotion V5 or V8 are better starter wheels. I next moved up to the V11 and at first could not ride it at all, but then suddenly one day it just clicked and the feeling was like day and night between the Mten4. Floating on clouds and stable at higher speeds, it was probably the feeling everyone loves about EUC riding that I couldn’t quite feel on the Mten4. I now use the Mten4 to learn to ride backwards. It took a few hours but I was able to do it. I cannot do it on the V11 yet, probably because I’m afraid of scruffing it or the higher pedals/higher weight? Next I bought a Kingsong s16 to ride off-road. I have found out I’m not as good as I think as I don’t feel the same confidence as when riding the V11. The s16 feels fidgety and unstable at higher speeds compared to the V11 but can anybody chime in its because its a 16” wheel or does it just take time to get use to it? I’m guessing its more the later. I am so tempted to get a Veteran Lynx but I think I’m jumping the gun and may never attain the skills to ride faster then 40kph.

    • @Roskellan
      @Roskellan 4 місяці тому

      I think a lot of how we control/ feel stable on an EUC is unconscious control. Like you don't have to think to stand upright we balance instinctively. That's all fine except when you transfer from one machine to another, then the feed back is different and a machine that once was second nature now feels a bit off because you haven't ridden it for a while. For this reason I always let myself get a few miles under my belt when I haven't ridden a machine for a while, I always seem to be more comfortable into the journey than at the beginning. At the end of the day its time on the machine and also working the machine, none of this zombie type riding. Having said that at 66 now I'm never going to match the skills I see on UA-cam here, and that's fine by me, I'll ride how it pleases me best, and I have more room for improvement than many 🙂.

      I have a buzzer horn thing but tend not to use it. I approach people slowly, it not just to be safe, but not to startle or frighten either. If people start chatting to me I very often stop to continue the conversation. I only have had one really negative reaction from the public - you can't please everybody. In Cornwall at least the Police are not at all interested, they have more important things to deal with. Just as long as you are not showboating, doing daft things or people complaining about you, then they are going to leave you alone. We have past each other on several occasions.

    Hi can u tell me the mirror on helmet, pad set up and gloves. I am interested in master since it appears they’re on V3. Great content thanks

    • @Roskellan
      @Roskellan 8 місяців тому

      The helmet mirror is actually a mirror intended for cyclists. It pushes in the end of the handle bars (on a cycle). I have modified it to bolt through the visor of the helmet. I have tried various other arrangements and this is the only one that works for me. The EUC pads are 3D printed primarily for braking, the stock pads for acceleration. The only time I regret not having extra pads for acceleration is for steep gradients. My other pads are fairly standard, I where this arrangement in the summer and have a heavier jacket in the winter. The gloves are motorcycle gloves except motorcycle gloves do not have wrist guards. I have therefore lengthened the velcro straps on my wrist guards to fit the gloves. All a bit of a faff putting them on but its worth it I think. Other wise high ankle boots, I always wear the same foot gear. I love the Master, as much range as I can use, and more performance than my skills could extract. The high foot position takes some getting used to and some practice, and I keep meaning to change the tyre to a road tyre because I use the EUC almost exclusively on good surfaces (my S18 for off road). Other things in respect to the Master, the trolly handle really isn't strong enough to pick up the machine, I have 3D Printed Handles front and back for that purpose, I also 3D printed a better stand, and a seat.

    I'm 61 years old and all what you said it was really true and wise... I start one years ago with the ninebot one E+ only because I see in the user manual on internet "not suggest to use over 50 years old" !... I'm not a sports man, but I have strong legs done by years of sky on the mountain and motorcycle, BDW, immediately I buy one used, in six day I learn to go on the EUC and now I make extreme off road in the mountain with a lot of young skilled guys all happy to ride with me and me with them. In the city the EUC are fantastic, in mountain too. Sure I'm old... i know, but with the experience to be an old man you can get a lot of ride with a "minimum" of safety ( you must get all the kind of protections when you ride ) even if you ride only for some miles, this are dangerous kind of things, the young's under evaluate all the hidden risk and they usually pass over limits and discover after trouble (see on UA-cam how many incidents ). I start with the little ninebot ( perfect now to learn after one year ride backward too..) and suddenly happen this strange kind of hobby...I buy Inmotion V10F, V8F, Begode Hero, Kingsong S22, and Begode Master and I must to stop me...because the child inside me want run more EUC and try different feature and different sensations. Run fast is not my way, 30/40 km/h is enough and a lot, even if you fall for a cut back, or for any kind of reason in a real world as we know is NOT easy. The agility is my favorite trip, climb off road at very high angle of climb is hard, but you can enjoy to get the top of the mountains after some ours of ride. Well done my friends, stay healthy and enjoy the EUC as possible until we can do it...

I do ride my ebike and scooter, lifting it up 3 flights up and down. 70 lbs for each of the ride, I don’t really lift it as much as dragging it, up a stair at a time.

      Keeping in mind that the control of an EUC is through your feet, adjusting your weight, bending your knees. A certain fluency and flexibility is required in ankles and knees. Even stepping onto the thing needs strength and control in the leg first on the machine.

    if i followed that procedure for testing and it came back all of the are at 3.95 -99 no dead cells does that mean its good or does it have to be 4 volts

    • @Roskellan
      @Roskellan 9 місяців тому

      Any voltage above 2v is a good sign, anything above 3v would be considered normal. 3v to 4v (flat to charged) being the normal working range of the cell. If you are measuring above 3v in every case, you have a good battery pack. The next consideration is that all voltages should be the same. If some pairs are too low they can be charged to the same as the others by connecting a supply across that particular pair. That supply would need to be constant current (250mA perhaps) and set to either 4v, or the voltage to which you are trying to achieve. If you are charging batteries from a supply it is essential the current can be set prior to connecting to the battery. In all of this you are working live as it were, any mis-connection, reversed polarity, or inadvertent short will have an instant and dramatic consequence.

      Yes, I'll do a bit more riding my NInebot One E+. I think that day I lost most of my riding footage. These things happen, mostly to me apparently 🙂

    This 72 yo learner got a King song s22 pro as my first wheel. I doesn't go fast enough. Bugger getting little wheels. Who do you think I am, Rockafella? I've paid my dues in blood and couldn't be happier. But I think I just squeaked in because no doubt they will want me to surrender my driver's licence soon. It is either the wheel or the gofer cart. Joe cool's ego wont tolerate a gofer. What would my Paparazzi say? Besides, you cant take a gofer on a bus. (Note to self: Get some aviator shades.) Moral of the story, Whippersnappers, get on to it. Time's a wasting.

      Kinsong S22 not fast enough? You be careful 🙂. As to surrendering my driver's licence - not a chance. As long as I am safe to drive I will drive one way or another....

    I started riding EUC on an inmotion V5 in spring of 2023 at 64. The V5 is a good inexpensive learning wheel. I try not to ride any faster than I can run. I also bought some Lett knee pads, elbow pads and a good motorcycle dirt bike helmet and some wrist guards. At this age my bones are brittle. I'm having fun but being careful.

    I appreciate you, I have 200 km of experience. Would it be better if I changed the tire?

    • @Roskellan
      @Roskellan 9 місяців тому

      I have a street tyre ready to go on (Michelin City Extra), just haven't got around to changing it. Not that there is anything wrong with the fitted off road tyre, even on the street. It all depends on the type of riding you are doing and personal preferences.

      so i can learn this way instead of the hard way,

    • @Roskellan
      @Roskellan 9 місяців тому

      When you ride, your footplates pretty much stay level depending on what road mode you are using. Some EUC's have an unfortunate characteristic of dipping (tilting forward) after sharp or continuous turns, before resuming their original profile - (Pedal Dipping).

    I'm 64 and not once did I question if I should do this. Now should I spend the money on these wheels is a different story.

    I’m 64 and started riding about six months ago on a V5F. Really enjoyed that for a couple of months and was totally hooked so I got a v11. Nice to see there’s lots of other people over 60 out there enjoying this great sport. If any of you are in the Washington DC metro area I’d love to get together and go for a ride.

      Have you had any crashes? Is it a big deal if you go down once in a while? I'm 58 and all my friends think I'm nuts but I've been riding motorcycles and skateboards and surfing and mountain bikes all my life so I'm ready!

    I started at 68 years old. I will be 70 in 3 months, and I ride whenever possible. Kingsong 16S, S18, S22, and latest Inmotion V13. Over 12000 miles so far. Just love the sport. Always full protective gear.
