    I have to admit that it does feel surprisingly different to learn that the French wouldn't offer a simple amount of empathy for a person who might be experiencing a challenging moment. That seems odd to me. And I've lived in over ten different states in America. I've lived in NYC and all the way across the United States. And no matter how fast the pace has been, people still show a certain level of decency and care for even a stranger in America. And I've heard from friends and family members that have been to France, how many French people don't like to get involved if they see a person being harassed or harmed. But refusing to demonstrate basic human emotions for someone who has lost a wallet or pocket book, shouldn't be that taxing. I always thought the French would be quite passionate people on a whole host of topics. But I guess it's true to say we don't know a situation until you experienced it. I'm definitely considering a move to Europe. And France is one of my top options. I'm considering France, the Netherlands, UK, Ireland and Portugal. Hope to start traveling early next year.

      @riderskater7248 yes. But if it's not taught it's normal to have that response or non response. Perhaps if I weren't a stranger. I know my french friends would have shown empathy to me.

    Fantastic video. I noticed that some expat groups in France tend to create enclaves and keep to themselves without trying to integrate much. My hubby and I intend to integrate more into the French community we live in and speak French more than English anytime possible. The cultural differences like the one you experienced with your lost purse are frustrating, and I felt your anxiety as you were sharing that story. I would have felt the same way. But I did notice that the French are less demonstrative in general. Even if they feel it, they keep it tight to the vest. My adult daughter is actually like that, so I feel like I understand it. She’s not cold, she just feels and demonstrates/emotes things a little differently. Thank you for sharing your insights and advice. You probably don’t realize the lives you are touching. ☺️

      You hit the nail on the head. I think this is especially true in situations with strangers. Had one of the people I encountered with my purse ordeal been a friend or maybe an acquaintance, there might have been a little more concern. Going in with the intention to build community with French locals will definitely enrich your experience. Bon courage!

    I agree with your advice….especially about the importance of resiliency . You have to be prepared for not being able to “adult” in the ways one is used to in one’s home country…most especially if you do not speak the language when you first arrive. Take French lessons with a teacher…you will get great cultural insight along with communication skills. Yes and contact a coach like yourself that can provide valuable tools to help you to adapt. I also think it’s vital not to purchase a property before you travel around a bit and stay in a place to try it out for a while before taking the plunge.

    Hi Patricia! I’m just getting in to your videos and am enjoying your style. I first saw you on a guest spot maybe a year plus ago (Delights by Dawn) and now find you popping up on other channels I watch. Of course Adrian Leeds and before that Baguette Bound. I was surprised by the ride along format but I really like it! Your missteps may have been a bit painful for you but certainly are helpful for the rest of us. Admitting to making those missteps is very validating also as I like to be prepared and build up a lot of anxiety about making a mistake. Seeing you make a misstep and it’s fine (well eventually) is very calming. I’m wondering if you talk about the process of getting rid of things in preparation for the move and how you feel about what you got rid of and kept now. I will definitely be checking out your other videos. 👍🏻

People tend to think of therapy as just Freudian style psychoanalysis that has the reputation of focusing on your past and lasting years. The majority of modern treatment not only examines your past to identify what may have led to current issues but we focus on working with our clients to clarify their goals and move forward in their lives. I think of therapy and life coaching like Venn diagrams, there are some common areas covered by both.

    Hello Patricia. This is off topic but here it goes. My older sister came to visit me for a few days, and I told her about you and a couple of other people living abroad. It's weird because neither she nor I have ever been married and we have no kids. Anyway, she was intrigued by you so we watched some bits and pieces of a couple of your videos. Then she watched some more on her own. She said she's going to live vicariously through you and some others as my beloved sister has very little desire for travel in the US. She would like to visit Maine; she has even less of a desire for foreign travel. That said dad and I convinced her to visit me in France with him once while I was on vacation there and she loved it. My dad and mom actually visited me in Lugano, Switzerland though we missed each other because I had not yet returned from Asia. Still they stayed with the people I had been staying with in Lugano and they had a great time. Lugano was my home away from home for many months.They also visited me in Spain. Later after mom's death in 88 my dad visited me in Brazil in 90. He made it to 96 before passing in 2017. My parents were special and my dad liked to travel though in his 80s he said no mas. My family and friends thought I would live overseas forever. That's a stressful subject for me that I don't like talking about. Oh, so you liked Québec. It's my sister who told me about you going there. I liked it;.I'd like to get to Montreal sometime.

      Thank you for sharing my channel with your sister. I'm glad you both enjoy it. It seems it brings up fond memories for you. Yes, Quebec started this whole thing for me. I'd considered moving there, but with Canadian winters being what they are, I decided to see what France had to offer. 😊 Et voila. The rest is history.

    Congratulations Patricia I'm so happy that you are preparing for the DELF exam!!! You should be so proud of yourself with everything you have accomplished in your time there. There will always be ups and downs moments of doubt and difficult times. But you come out a different person on the other side. Wiser and more resilient!!

      Ah, thank you. Preparing for the DALF has stepped up my level of commitment to advancing my French skills. It underscores how far I have to go. Your message helps me to stop and recognize how far I've come. Not only with the language but with who I am as a person. THANK YOU! 🙂

    I think you missed three more items for the 'I feel French' column, all under the category of driving, which occurred to me as I was watching your journey: 1) able to navigate a roundabout; 2) obeying the speed limit; 3) keeping to the right unless overtaking. Give yourself credit, where credit is due 😄

      🤣 Wow! You are so right. I'm so much more comfortable driving (and parking in tiny spaces) here than I was when I first started driving here. I no longer put off driving somewhere because of stress as I had in th beginning. Thanks for pointing this one out.😀

    Hello Madam, this is what we call successful integration. You are an American who lives in France and who respects her host country. Being proud of your native country by living in another country and respecting the laws, the rules of life and adapting as best as possible to the daily life of your host country is exactly what the behavior of all people who move to another country should be. This is successful integration or "le vivre ensemble " as they say in France (living together). Good luck in our country.

      Well put. I might say my biggest influence I picked up from 3 years in France many years ago is in the nature of intellectual pursuits and my thinking a lot about Culture with a big C as I find that the French tend to focus a lot on culture. A more practical thing I picked up which is not just due to France, but to many Europeans in general is I stopped holding my eating utensils like the American I am, and I switched to holding them like many Europeans. One day, while in France, it hit me, why was I constantly cutting my meat, putting down the knife, switching my fork from my left hand to my right hand, eating with that fork, then switching it back to my left hand. I thought what a waste of time and movement. Since around 1982 I started eating like a non American. That said, I've picked up some other concrete cultural habits from some other countries, and I always try to respect the laws, customs, habits, etc of the country I'm in which lead to trouble in Tunisia. That's a story for another day.

    What resources did you use to learn French?

    • @PatriciaBrooksCourageCatalyst
      @PatriciaBrooksCourageCatalyst 11 днів тому

      Hello! I'm planning on doing a video on this soon. I used the Pimsleur method before arriving (and am using it now to learn Spanish), I had a tutor in the US, I took a proper French class when I first arrived, and a variety of UA-cam channels (which I'll share in the upcoming video). Oh, I also used conversationexchange.com to find language exchange partners. You might also find this playlist of interest: ua-cam.com/video/SQRSPkfW0S8/v-deo.html

    Why are you watching France Channel if you are living in France? French television has much more to offer than shows that have been filtered for foreigners.

    • @chucku00
      @chucku00 16 днів тому

      France Channel has subtitles and are adding cultural references for people who arent familiar with French pop culture, history or humor. Some French series can be really challenging to watch and immerse into if you don't have the basic French cultural codes, which is often the case even for foreigners who live in France since several years.

      @@chucku00 And that's exactly what I meant when I wrote "filtered for foreigners."

    • @chucku00
      @chucku00 16 днів тому

      @@kerouac2 Ok Jack, then why are you asking this question in your intitial comment or were you _sur la route toute la sainte journée_ (if you can catch this one I can tell you're 99.9% likely a native French speaker)? Even if she's living in France since several years, she admitted in this video she still doesn't know much about French pop culture as a foreigner, hence why she's finding France channel useful for her language tests. _Nous ne voyons pas d'autre explication,_ (check this one too). BTW, French TV channels (France TV included) never explain any cultural reference in their programs.

      I watch regular French television, listen to French radio, and I watch the programming on FranceTV streaming service. The beauty of FranceTV streaming for me is that I can watch the program when I'm ready and some of the shows have French subtitles which helps with learning and comprehension.

    Great video! Does France TV have english subtitles available?

    • @chucku00
      @chucku00 16 днів тому

      Except for US or UK shows/series/films, English subtitles or audio tracks are rarely available on French DVB-T2 channels (airwaves HD video broadcasting). However, online services like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video or OCS almost always have English audio tracks or subtitles available. France 24 news channel can also be a good resource because you can easily switch from French to English.

    • @PatriciaBrooksCourageCatalyst
      @PatriciaBrooksCourageCatalyst 11 днів тому
