What does it mean when a dart is a rectangle??
when most of us think about darts in their triangle form. I say that a dart can also be a rectangle, but sometimes people look at me like I have 3 heads! THIS is what I mean by that! It can be ever so helpful when you are doing fittings especially! I sure hope this makes sense!

Love the safety pin trick Tricia! Quick Q please - do you then have to remove the zig zag stitching because it’s showing on the right side? 🤔
That's crazy simple. Thanks!
Don't you just love this!? So happy you find it helpful. Thanks for watching! 💚
I’m beginning to see how so many things are actually just a dart.
Ha Ha Ha! Then my plan is working! Lol 😘💙💚
@@creativecostumeacademy Oh yes sewing master, you teach the sewing dummy very well!
It's all about the dart! No matter the shape the dart takes!!
That's right!!💚
Bloody genius woman! It’s witchcraft. No faffing with rulers and 1/8” etc. thank you so much!
Thanks sooo very much for sharing this information!❤️❤️❤️
You are so very welcome! Thank you for watching and leaving a comment! 💚
Could I use all this info (from the whole channel) if I want to learn how make dress for dolls, (1/6 scale) :)
ABSOLUTELY!! These are universal laws that help with everything! I would also suggest Kenneth D. King's book, Doll Couture. 💚
@@creativecostumeacademy thank you so much for your answer :) will also check out the book...
You’re right I didn’t know some of these were darts. It amazes me how many ways you can change the look of something by moving the dart.
it's ALL about those darts! Lol. I am just fascinated by them! 💚
Love your channel's spirit, but I have just one small critique. After the introduction, in my opinion... the volume of the music clashes with your spoken message. If we could taper down the background music a bit so viewers, like myself can learn and focus on your message, opposed to struggling to jam with the beats 🤷🏾. Or, just pause the music altogether. Too much noise clutter. Nothing personal.
Hi! Thank you for watching and letting me know about the music. We will look into this for future videos. Thanks for watching! 💚
I'm making Vogue 9000 and needed more room in the waist so I decreased the two front and four back waist darts by the appropriate ammout. I hope this was a legit way to alter it. I made a mock up of the bodice and it fits well. Now I have to figure out what to do with the skirt pieces at the waist. Feeling lazy so I'm thinking of taking a narrower seam allowance and tapering to 5/8 at the hip line. I never considered the side seams as a hidden dart but can clearly see from your example how that is true. Great little video! 🍄🌻
That sounds perfect! That is exactly what i would do! I don't consider it lazy at all! You are using your resources! 💚
Wow! Thanks!
You are so very welcome! Thanks for watching! 💚
My half scale dress form name is Clara

I like the way you teach. I have seen many instructional videos on dress forms, but I would like to see a tutorial from you. I would like your opinion on purchasing one how to buy the correct size and how you would suggest making the form fit an individuals body. 🌸
Thank you! Ok! I will make that note. 💚
The trick with the card to lengthen the sleeve is one I am going to add to my toolbox. Tricia you truly are the Queen of the Safety Pin pinning through that card with one hand.😂 Great video.
You know me and safety pins!! Lol💚 Glad you like the card idea. It's super handy.
@@creativecostumeacademy Never to old to learn something new😂
Thank you for providing the traditional expectation of where a sleeve is supposed to hit the hand. I have had this be a point of debate frequently. I can't break the rules until I know what they actually are! 🤣
Exactly!! Knowing what the rules are doesn't mean you have to follow them! You know where you can bend them! Lol. Thanks for watching! 💚
Fashionpedia has a fabric swatch book
Thank you for that! I'll have to check them out! 💚
In the past, I have made patterns and clothes for historical recreation. I had covid last year and now struggling with long covid. Brain fog has been a real struggle and I'm trying to teach myself pattern drafting and making clothes again. Thank you for reminding me that I don't have to remember everything! I have Helen Joseph Armstrong's book and Jenny Rushmore's book. Looking into finding a copy of Julie Cole's book. You are both amazing and looking forward to next month's live!
So sorry to hear that you have long covid. That is not fun! I'm so happy you are feeling inspired and have some new resources to check out. Thanks for watching! 💚
Omg a light bulb moment Thanks Tricia 🎉
As always, my pleasure! Thanks for watching! 💚
Thank you so much for this video. I was just about to "slash and re-draft" but this is so much easier and will work great for a simple pattern like an apron. You just saved me hours of work. Subscribed and signed up for the newsletter.
you are very welcome! i am so happy that it saved you lots of headache! Thank you for watching! 💚
Hey , I am a bespoke tailor and can tell you my actually favourite book and system is red of Guido Hofenbitzer. It brought me to next fitting lever for trousers and everything.
Awesome! Thank you for sharing! I don't know this one. I am excited to look it up! Thank you for sharing and watching! 💚
Kathleen Spike's book Sew to Success was my bible when I started my custom dressmaking business. The dewey decimal code for costume books is 391. I often raid the library for patterning, design and fashion history as my bookcase is full. The TR Cutting Books are next on my list.
Oh! Thanks for the biz book recommendation! I think you would like the TR cutting books if you can find them! They are fun! 💚
Catching this on the replay as I got my left eye cataract removed today. In regards to fitting I wish they had techniques or tools to help with things such as fitting with a belly, bad knees, bad back, or other physical limitations.
I hope you heal quickly with your eye! I think the fitting for real people might have some helpful tips there. 💚
I do love sewing and pattern making books. It’s an addiction
I am same with having a small addiction. I thinks a good kind of addition tho, right!? Lol.💚
The exact type of video, I've been looking for... See you then
yay!! So happy you will join! See you then! 💚
Thank you for explaining this❤
You are so very welcome! thank you for watching! 💚
Great 👍 just to ask when you see darts in that are large do you make the bulk of them smaller so they don’t show as much on the finished garment ??
When there is a large dart root, I do sometimes cut out the dart down to seam allowance. I might also consider the design a bit too. I like a 2 dart bodice for larger bust and small waist. I think it looks more balanced. You can also turn it into a princess seam. The key is that if you need that space to come out of there, you take it out, but you can move it where ever you need to! 💚
Thanks Tricia great tutorial, much easier than I thought 🎉🎉
So happy you think so! Thanks for watching. 💚
I would get so excited when we taped together our pattern pieces to see how the pattern looked when I was learning pattern making. It was such a fun thing to do and helpful to see if the design was going the way you wanted. I never thought of double breasted garments as being similar to wrap garments🤦♀
I find it really helpful when I can see it in the paper what I am trying to create. I'm glad I am not the only one! 💚
Thank you for doing this video. I have been wanting to do a wrap dress or skirt. I haven't found a pattern, but I have the book you referenced and now I feel more empowered to begin the process!
Yay! You can do it! Glad you feel empowered. 💚
Made it much clearer when you did the little paper model. I love a wrap skirt.
I'm so happy that helped! I find I understand better when I have visuals. 💚
I love my rotary cutters. I can use scissors but my hand fatigues very easily. I broke my dominant right hand & lower arm in 8 places several years ago. On another note my daughter in law got me the neatest device for my rotary cutter. It screws on to my olfa cutter and has an extension that I can move in & out to line up to add desired seam allowances I need or want. I can cut my patterns without seam allowance and do my alterations and then as I’m cutting with rotary cutter at same time add the seam allowance.
So sorry to hear about your hand. That sounds painful. This rotary seam allowance tool sounds really cool! I want to know more! 💚
I made pattern drafting using my own measurements but it turned out awful.. I did so many pattern drafts but unfortunately, nothing fits me as I look petite so it's hard to come up with an accurate pattern, and trust me it's so frustrating. what to do?
This is unfortunately a common story I hear. I teach fitting and pattern drafting in a different way. We learn how to take a pattern that is close to your sizing and learn methods for how to make adjustments to fit. I have lots of content on here which is free giving tips on how to do this. I also have a membership, Pattern Making Academy, which also helps you with this method. My private community, The Pattern Place, where I offer fitting advice and support in a group setting. This is currently closed for enrollment, but if you are interested in learning more about it, you can email us at hello@creativecostumeacademy.com I have helped many in your situation and it is because of similar stories like yours that I off the help that I do. Hope this helps! 💚
Some very good tips. I did the free pattern making thing and it had lots of great tips. I’m definitely going to join the newsletter thing and the project planner thing . I keep a calendar and a note book & sticky pads. Also what is block interfacing? I am getting ready to interface a large piece of fabric and would this be a quicker way to do it!
Block fusing is where you send out fabric to get fused by a factory that has a machine that does it for you. It fuses really well and is worth it if you are doing lots of yardage. I also use tons of sticky notes! There is a place in New York that I would have to look up. I know of a factory near where I am living also. You may have to do some research for where you can get it done. 💚
Amazing video Tricia. That is exactly how I plan. So true about the time it takes. Batch sewing multiples seems like it is taking forever then all of a sudden it is done. Lots of great advice in this video, thanks for making it.
Happy to hear you have a similar planning method! I agree, sometimes when you are production line sewing, it feels like it takes forever, but it actually goes much faster in the long run.💚
You are AMAZING! Thank you for all you do!
You are too kind! I am so glad you find it helpful! 💚
This is fantastic! Thank you for sharing your experience.
Yay! I hope it is helpful! There is a freebie checklist that might be helpful also. 💚
❤
Thanks for watching! 💚
What a useless video. Stop wasting time
Great idea thanks Tricia. 🥳🥳
You are very welcome! Thanks for watching! 💚
Just wanted to say, I came across your video while searching for how to make my own patterns. Although I'm not in the market for this right now, I can absolutely see the value in having a teacher make a sloper for me so that I can fast track to another aspect of pattern making. You're providing a valuable service to people by taking out some of the leg work and it's a shame more people in this world are not aware of the option to scroll on past something if they don't like or agree with it. There is dignity in making money as a creative person, and when people choose to criticize that and your blouse instead of keeping their negativity to themselves, it is more of a reflection on them than on you and your work.
THANK YOU so much for this! I really appreciate you seeing and hearing the message I am hoping people get. 💚
Would love to do a tutorial but I’m going to have to look at this at least a couple more times to get the complete hang of it.
You can watch as many times as you would like! 💚
Great tutorial. I love a cowl neck design.
It's such a nice detail! 💚
Very informative. I wouldn't have thought to set the pattern on the bias, but it makes total sense. Thanks!
Bias makes all the difference with the cowl design.💚
1. Distribute the elastic in the leg opening so there's more take-up in the back than in the front 2. If you're raising the leg opening, only raise it in the front
Those are the main things that I have found help! 💚
That's an amazing trick. I have a roll of fishing line I used for bridal veil hems and it is langusihing in the draw, now I know another use for it. Will definitely use a safety pin.😂
The safety pin is key!! 😉I think the reason I bought the fishing line originally was to make some curvy fun hems! 💚
I’ve used dental floss but I’m going to definitely give this a try.
@@victoriahannah1633 Dental floss works great too! 💚
This video comes at the right time because I need a way to tack down the skirt lining for a 1920s refashion. I cut a floor length dress to knee length to add fringe and beads. I planned to use my serger to create a thread tack, but it is presently in need of repair. So, I plan to use your directions to hand create the thread tack possibly doing the French tack style. I need to have it done in 2 days for a production of The Great Gatsby. Thank you so much for this video ❤.
Sounds like this would be a great use of swing tacks! Good luck with the show! I wanna see all the 20' costumes!! 💚
How do you self measure Arm length?? With cuffs?
There are a couple of different ways to measure arm length. All of them though, recommend to measure the arm while it has a bend in it toward the front. Some people measure from the middle of the back across to the shoulder round over the elbow and to the wrist. Some people will take the measurement from the base of the neck to the shoulder point, then around the elbow to the wrist. Another good measurement is to take the under arm measurement from the armpit to the wrist. Cuffs should go to the wrist and are taken off of the length of a standard sleeve. You may choose to add more length to the sleeve above the cuff depending on your design. Hope this helps! 💚
I just realized you asked about doing this on yourself. Some tapes have a hole at the end. It is helpful to put a string or loop through that to hold the tape taught in you hand and the neck base way might be the easier method for self measuring. 💚
Thanks for your tutorial, excellent method.
So happy you found it helpful! 💚
Omg 😱 I've been trying this method for a while now, your explanation made me understand better.... thank youuu🙏🏽
