Not only do we discuss each track of the US release, we get into alternative tracks, B-sides, early songs as The Portraits and more. What do you think of The Fixx? Do you own physical media by them? The Lamia
My top 20 (not ranked, but chronologically): The Musical Box Return of the Giant Hogweed The Fountain of Salmacis Watcher of the Skies Can-Utility and the Coastliners Supper's Ready Dancing out with the Moonlit Night Firth of Fifth Cinema Show Fly on a Windshield Broadway Melody of 1974 Cuckoo Cocoon In the Cage (the latter 4 must be played in a row) Lilywhite Lilith The Lamia Dance on a Volcano Entangled Squonk Mad Man Moon Ripples. I could not further rank them, it pretty much depends on my mood. There's a lot more great, very good and good Genesis tracks that I still love to listen to (and I understand that some people like them better than my list), partially 50 years later, but to me, these are their 20 greatest songs.
It’s funny that your guest mentions “King Crimson”. I have always felt that “KC” was an influence for Cinema Show. “KC”’s “Starless” has a similar structure and mindset as Cinema Show.
Cinema Show is perhaps one of my favorite Genesis songs. The first half is just lovely with evocative lyrics. The instrumental half flows along without any gratuitous time signature changes. Yet the playing is still complex and driven forward by that incredible drumming. One of the best ever and perfectly captures what “Genesis” is in only 10 minutes.
Merry Christmas Dave, and don't forget DC Baccus' mailbox smashings! Ah the good old days.
Wow my top ten would Not include Many of those songs. Good choice with Dance on a Volcano! Cheers!!! 🎉❤ rock on prog on #billsmafia
Great choices Daniel and Davey, Daniel mentioned 2 songs I’d definitely have in my top 10 and those are “Dodo/Lurker” and “Me & Sarah Jane” which both of those songs are my favourites from “Abacab” but of course I love “Supper’s Ready” too and the micro version “Domino”. I’d definitely put songs like “Turn it on Again”, “Behind the Lines” and “Fading Lights” on my top 12 or top 10 for sure but well done you both and merry Christmas!! 🎄😄👍
Without watching the show (will do so later) Supper’s Ready (always will be my favorite) The Musical Box The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway Los Endos Mama No Son of Mine Abacab In the Beginning I Know What I Like The Knife Misunderstanding That’s All
RIP Mike, you were the sound of the Moody Blues. I know you were a man of strong Faith, no doubt that you're in God's all star band now. 😃
This is a tough one Davey, real tough one as they’ve got such an amazing catalog. You’ll have to give me some time to give you my 12 as I’ll have to think about this. Great, great topic to make a video about. As always, keep on doing that great work you do. Happy holidays to you and Tia 🤘
@@brandon1351 ~ Thanks, Brandon. Always appreciate your feedback and support. My larger list of 40 was hard to whittle down to a dozen. Plus, perhaps, some honorable mentions… hmmm… 🤔 At any rate, this was bicyclelegs band pick and l just buckled up for the musical journey! 😉 Have a very Merry Christmas with your family and friends, good sir. Cheers! 🍻

Merry Christmas, guys
Thanks. Same to you and yours!
I just saw this video, and dont know why mike pinder doesnt get more recognition. I guess the older fans will remember him more, Most people under 50 know the two guys, justin Haywood and john lodge. What a great lasting band the moody blues were, they left us a great catalogue, rip mike pinder!
David B. - Nice program - "the once and mighty Pit"
Maybe too much international diplomacy and not enough SD & R to sustain widespread appeal? A keyboard/synth heavy band must remain stylistically strong over the course of the record to hold listener interest. It's harder to do electronic music than guitar laden records. On their phantoms record some arrangements are great (sunshine in Shade) and some become too similar in terms of their electronic sounds (lost battle overseas). As a contrast, I use Roxy music as an example. Very strong compositions and each track is musically different. if a track still sounded barren, they recruited additional musicians or singers to complete it. But maybe I should shut up and listen to their more recent Fixx stuff before I give my 2 cents. The Fixx have alot to sing about with all the current events: Drones....Drones above my head...till the morning. Drones above my head...heed the warning....and hide your baby.
So glad i found this. I was curious about his history in the band. He really contributed so much. The mellotron is what made them so ethereal and unique. A perfect mix of lads! I followed him on FB. We all get old and that sucks! Ty
Great video Tia and Davey :) Tia is just as knowledgeable as you are mate! Very impressive that she knows of Robert Fripp. Definitely a keeper 😂 As always, keep up that great work and happy holidays to you both. From the land down under 🇦🇺 Brandon
@@brandon1351 ~ Merry Christmas, 🎄 Brandon! Thanks for the kind words. As you know, I did an album track ranking for this one. I remember you guys talking about doing this, but I thought it was going to be a ranking show. I can handle this deep dive!

stand or fall...is the best truck.
@@GUR-ARYEA ~ There’s no denying the greatness of “Stand or Fall.” For 1982, this band were extremely politically minded and motivated. The perfect band for the then current Cold War climate.
@daveycretin664 i very liked allso duran duran at that timing.
i remember this album from the 80's. and i like it. i have the cassete of him.
@@GUR-ARYEA ~ Thanks for commenting and watching. I bought the vinyl, originally, in late 1982 or early 1983. My best guess is after l heard them guesting on the live, syndicated FM radio show ROCKLINE to promote the album. Cheers! 🍻

I don't rank their albums. I devour them. Listening to them since '83.
Thank you for explaining the history of the Moody's
Great Show you two. Not a huge fan of the Police, but interesting the comments about Synchronicity and the tension in the band making it so good, that was exactly the case for Rumours by Fleetwood Mac, I mean they all hated each other at the time of the recordings and we ALL know what happened with that release.
@@marhill77 ~ You are correct in saying that sometimes intense conflict breeds creativity. Definitely the case with both The Police and The Mac. Thanks for watching and commenting, Marlon. Cheers! 🍻
I like the alternate Road of Bones storyline.
@@SlicedBread-i7x ~ So did the rest of us. Less morbid, perhaps? Thanks for watching and commenting. Slainte Mhath! 🍻
@daveycretin664 exactly
Wow! Did you chop your hair Cretin? Wow Jones infatuated with Todd. I think Todd does a great job and the latest album is their best with him BUT the songs they recorded from 82-94 are too much for me to have any Todd cuts as you will see once my video runs. Cretin too many common cuts from you early on. You usually are always a deep cut guru. Good episode overall. Rock on!!! Got Ryche?
Here’s my ranking list!! 😄👍 1. “Ghost in the Machine” (1981). 2. “Synchronicity” (1983). 3. “Zenyatta Mondatta” (1980). 4. “Regatta de Blanc” (1979). 5. “Outlandos d’Amour” (1978). Let me know what you both think!! 😉👍
I have found IQ in the last year from listening to Andy Edwards UA-cam channel. As a Genesis fan from 1977 i dont know how i missed IQ. I obviously havent got the time living with the music that everyone else has but i agree with Todd in that generally speaking i think they are getting better. I am going to see them live next February in Bury. I love IQ they should be huge
@@tim4123-y4g ~ Thanks for commenting and watching, Tim. I’m glad Mr. Edwards turned you onto his former mates. Welcome aboard! Enjoy the upcoming gig and Merry Christmas! 🎄🎁
Excellent review! My favorite tune of theirs is “A Trip to the Fair” When I first heard that, I was driving with my friend Jeff to the Great Neck Bowling alley (showing my age). This song came on as I was driving and we were both mesmerized. Who is this? Is what we both said to one another. It’s a lengthy song and we parked the car and waited for it to end. So many twists and turns. We couldn’t believe how long it was being played on the radio. Both Jeff and I are huge fans of Genesis (Peter Gabriel years). We felt this song was so epic and on par with anything Genesis was doing. The structure of the song, you felt that you were on a roller coaster, going through the different genres. Classical, jazz, melodic simply amazing
It was .. not because of he was a pop singer. thats all i will say..Charlie is/was my ex
Stewart Copeland is my favorite drummers.
the attic album is amazing
@@juliemusique-tn4dp ~ Yes, there is some excellent stuff on The Lost Attic CD. 💿 Unfortunately, we decided to skip over that and their debut demo cassette as well. It was a long enough show and we couldn’t mention every single release. However, l did show a live IQ CD 💿 set and a Martin Orford solo CD, 💿 too. Thanks for watching and commenting!
no one talks about this band i dont know them well
@@juliemusique-tn4dp ~ As I stated during the show, no bad albums in the batch. Some might be better than others, but we all have slightly different perspectives on these things. If it gets people to revisit the great catalog of IQ, or even hear them for the first time, l consider it a success. Obviously, my guests and l are all very passionate about this band. Cheers! 🥂
You guys should do a show on Jadis. They just put out a new album earlier this year and Martin Orford is back on keys, flute, backing vocals & apparently he did a lot of writing on it, too. I know the word "underrated" gets thrown around a lot, but in Jadis case it really fits. They just seem to always be flying under the radar in the prog world and most people don't even seem to know they are still around making new music. Gary Chandler's guitar work is very distinctive and unique IMO, and I've always been surprised that he's never gotten more attention when people discuss prog guitarists.
@@soundsandvisionsHQ ~ l was actually correct. This Menel era IQ is the outdoor show in the rain I’ve seen before. I have it on now. Paulie introduced “Sold On You” as their forthcoming single - in a few months - from their next album! Doing two new songs for a festival crowd is an odd setlist choice. Five songs in and no Nicholls tunes so far. I’d have to play catch up on the last few Jadis releases. Im not sure where my compadres stand on Jadis, I’ll have to ask them. I have a lot of Prog content coming up in 2025 that l listed in another comment. Acts like Arena, Ice Age, Iluvatar, Marillion, Rush, The Velour Shingle, etc. Hey! Song six is “The Wake!”
@@daveycretin664 Great to hear you've got more prog shows coming. Now subbed to the channel. I'm a fan of Arena, but not as familiar with Ice Age or Iluvatar. And Marillion is an all-time favorite, top 3 band for me, but with a very, very heavy preference for the Hogarth decades, 1989 and onwards, right up to today. I almost think of "Seasons End" as their debut album, though I know, of course, that's not historically correct. lol. Another band I'm heavily into now is Mostly Autumn. Though I was late to the party in discovering their music, they are currently the band I've been listening to more often than any other in 2024. Still discovering the whole catalog, with "Sight of Day", "Ghost Moon Orchestra" & "Dressed in Voices" being among the most played albums.
@@daveycretin664 As for the I.Q. setlist of that UA-cam show - knowing that they were playing a festival where it was very likely a lot of the audience was not going to know who I.Q. were, trying to get the audience interested in the next album was probably a good move. According to the video description this was a fest where the headliners were Jethro Tull, Foreigner and Starship, so maybe they would have done more of previous albums had it been a more prog-oriented festival.
My favorite is Road of Bones, and next Resistance
@@NormBoyle ~ Thanks for watching and commenting, Mr. Boyle! I think one of my esteemed colleagues would totally agree with you. No matter what our individual personal favourites are, at least we all agree on what a wonderful band they are! New music from them due at the end of this week, too! Allegedly. Slainte Mhath! 🍻
The title "Wurensh" is not a real word but an anagram for "New Rush". While it was first being written someone in the band, I believe Menel, said it sounded like a new Rush song. So that became a working title that they just left as is rather than change it. And this would have been towards the end of Rush's "synth period", when they, like IQ, were criticized by some for going after a more commercial sound (I never bought into that thinking myself and love Rush's synth period as very creative). Also, it's now largely forgotten that during the Paul Menel/"Are You Sitting Comfortably" era, Squawk Records set them up on a tour opening for Mike & The Mechanics, which seems to be the kind of audience that the label wanted I.Q. to appeal to. Unfortunately they got a somewhat lukewarm reception from The Mechanics audience, which helped only to give I.Q. a lesser-standing with the label, and they were soon dropped - though the label's financial troubles have also been sited...During the Menel period I was a member of the International I.Q. fan club - and their newsletters are where I read this info. I still have all my old fan club mags in good condition. The last newsletter I received bore the headline "I.Q. silenced after a long Squawk". They were not shy about taking minor jabs at the label in their newsletters. I just let my membership run out after that. The band's future seemed too uncertain at that moment. And yes, I liked the Menel period, though I think they've gotten in better in recent decades, with "Dark Matter" & "Frequency" being favorites.
@@soundsandvisionsHQ ~ Thanks for commenting and watching, I greatly appreciate it. Someone else mentioned the same exact thing about “Wurensh” standing for “New Rush.” Except, he said it was producer Terry Brown’s idea. Whoever came up with it, it’s pretty cool to find that out all these years later! I really love the whole IQ catalog. I’m glad that so many others feel the same way about them as Todd, bicyclelegs and I do. Cheers! 🥂
@@daveycretin664 I'll have to get out the old fan club newsletters and see exactly who it credits for the "New Rush" anagram. What's interesting about the newsletters is that they cover that whole space of time from right after "Nomzamo" was out in stores and the (then) new I.Q. was born, right through to their being dropped by Squawk and Menel & Time Esau leaving the band. So the fan club stuff is like a complete time capsule of that era of the band and full of fascinating tidbits. If you want to see something interesting from this period of the band and what it was like, there is a 40 min. pro-shot concert here on UA-cam, though the sound quality is not that great. It can be found under the title "Paul Menel-era IQ, live in Germany c.1988".
@ ~ Thanks for the heads up! I’m going to put it on now. I wonder if it’s the outdoor live one? No, l think that’s from the Are You Sitting Comfortably? era.
I’ve watched that show, it’s good, cool to see what the band were like live with P Menel.
@ ~ Menel and Esau still remind me of Mike Peters & Eddie MacDonald from The Alarm with those groovy hairdos!
If you are a singer...try to sing some rock stuff in your channel.
Do ranking please to white snake
My top 5 is...pink floyd,ELO,foriegner, genesis, kansas. And after that white snake, rainbow, led zeppelin, deep purple and styx.this are my top 10.
2 hours! Davey! These are epic numbers. I just got home from work so will %100 be watching :) Also I purchased a ticket for the Beat (King Crimson) and mannnnn it was absolutely amazing!! There were times their performances were that epic I had tears rolling down my face. You’ve gotta go see it if you haven’t already. You’re the man Mr Cretin. @@brandon1351 ~ Thanks again, Brandon! Hope you enjoy it. We had planned this particular show for so long that I’m ecstatic it finally came to fruition! Typing this as I listen to some Opeth. Sadly, I didn’t get to see Beat. So instead, I guess I’ll have to watch some of it on UA-cam. Slainte Mhath! 🍻
I start to love them in the 70's.
Kansas are my in my top ten fivorite rock bands of all times.
Davey, always enjoy your shows. Great discussions. They're also very therapeutic with my Ravens just losing to the hated Steelers. This one is a particular favorite as IQ is a top 5 favorite bands of mine. Mike Holmes is probably in my top 3 of favorite guitarists. They way he puts together a solo is simply incredible. So many hair-raising moments over the catalog. I lean towards your top11 compared to Todd's who likes the more recent output. I think it's a Neil thing vs Widge for me. I just have not connected with the keyboard sounds/passages from Neil (I also wrote messages to his It All Posts Here so Neil is a cool guy). Anyways: #11 Nomzamo - I know you like this much higher but a bit too poppy for me on some of the tracks. Proggy tunes like HM and CG are very good #10 - Are You Sitting Comfortably? A bit better than Nomzamo since the pop songs are better. Wurensh is great.. its an anagram for New Rush with Terry Brown. #9 - Resistance - other than a few excellent tunes - Missle and certain sections - For another lifetime ending - WOW...., just not connecting with me. Only a 7.5 for me. The rest of these are 8.5 and better for me #8 - Road of Bones - I know that a lot of people love this one, but again some lack of connection with the tunes. I listen to this in editted sections.. my ADHD prog issue #7 Dark Matter - Sacred Sound is incredible. Like most of the epic but there are sections that I find a little too derivative. Again these are minor quibbles. As you guys mentioned, any IQ is better than 90% of music you'll hear. #6 7th House - Dig it alot, but it's not as great as other ones. The title track guitar solo ends too short during one of the trademark IQ majestic endings which frustrates me a lot. Sorry Todd disagree on these frustrating fade outs. The live versions don't have them and are so much better. Like Guiding Light a lot.. sorta a sequel to Leap of Faith, just not as quite as good. #5 Frequency - Just awesome tunes. Title track kicks ass. Providence. Stronger than Fricition.Even though Widge is my favorite, I really like Mark Westworth's output on this disc. I saw Mark live in Baltimore with Grey Lady Down years ago and I knew he was a great choice to replace Martin. Too bad he only stayed one album. #4 Ever. Their beautiful album. Just simply beautiful musically. The Darkest Hour is top 5 tune. Leap of Faith is incredible. Came down is best reflective last song on an album ever (excuse the pun) #3 Tales from the Lush Attic - Sonically not the best, obviously, but the 3 epics are incredible. Last Human Gateway is my favorite IQ song period.. That epic ending is my favorite IQ moment. This is my first IQ disc.. bought it at a show and listened to it on repeat while watching the Bills Oilers playoff game where the Bills came back to win. Very strong memory so it has a huge sweet spot. #2 Subterranean- Yes Sub is better than the Lamb from Genesis or any other 2 disc prog concept album for me...although.. Holy shit am I loving Frost* Life in The Wires... The song Part 2 might be best song since Headlong for me. Back on topic.. not much to say other than it is almost flawless. The Mike Holmes solos on the album are incredible.. probably his best. Like you said ending of Failsafe. Goosebumps. Narrow Margin- incredible. I befriended John and met the whole band in Quebec City to see them play Sub 2 nights. Really cool guys. #1 Wake - Don't know why #1.. just love every tune including Corners. The 80s vibe kinda puts it over Sub for me even though I probably like Sub compositional a little better. The Wake has this pseudo punk vibe to it thatvI love even though I do really like punk music much. Its varied, spacey, poppy, proggy.. has it all.. and the Pete vocals are charming with lack of polish. Headlong, Outer Limits, 1000 days, Widows Peak, Magic Roundabout... Awesome tunes!! Hey I probably met you guys at these shows. I was at the IQ lunch during Nearfest so probably bumped into Todd. Anyways thanks for sharing the great show with Bicyclelegs and Todd!
@@ravensnhokies ~ Holy smokes, WHAT a response! Thanks for commenting and watching, l appreciate it. I love your in-depth analysis of each album and you make some extremely valid points. Todd said IQ are his favourite band and bicyclelegs is a HUGE fan as well. I neglected to mention that IQ - and Threshold - are my most listened to acts over the last 30 years! (Well, only past 23 years for Threshold. But I love them, too!) I’m going to have to reread your comment again, so l can absorb it better.
