The Roaring Season
Приєднався 25 бер 2022
Hi, I’m Steve Holmes and I love classic cars and motorsport history. I’m a published author who has written a bunch of books and magazine articles on the subject over the last 25 years and I love to share my passion with other gearheads who’re also into this stuff.
My hope is that you’ll learn something from my videos, or at least be mildly entertained, or that I can learn from you. I love reading your comments and hearing your stories relating to the videos I post.

Penske Racing 1969 Camaro Trans-Am Trickery
1969 was a mad year in the SCCA Trans-Am Championship. The manufacturers were throwing millions at the series and the factory teams were all pushing the legal boundaries. Penske Racing built a pair of Camaros that featured a bunch of tricks as they fought to overcome the might of Ford. Here we take a look at some of those tricks; both legal and illegal.

Old Blue Datsun 1200 Rebuild - Part 9

Well, its been a journey! After a near four year restoration, I'd set myself a deadline for having my vintage SCCA Datsun 1200 race car back on the track. It didn't work out too well.
Reg Cook's ShellSport Datsun 160J
Переглядів 6 тис.2 місяці тому
This insane Datsun 160J is the creation of Cook Motor Racing, headed by the brilliant Kiwi, Reg Cook. This was a Datsun New Zealand factory car built for the 2-litre ShellSport Championship, and Reg used it to win the series twice. Its an epic time-warp racer, and a cool piece of Datsun New Zealand motorsport history.
Barry Algie's Holden Monaro Sports Sedan
Переглядів 19 тис.2 місяці тому
One of my childhood hero cars was this mad Holden Monaro Sports Sedan built and raced by Barry Algie. This car is dripping with ingenuity and creativity, and Barry's incredible design and fabrication skills abound throughout. The fact it was parked up for decades and is untouched from its 1980s heyday means it has a great story to tell.
The Original Willment Ford Escort Twin-Cam
Переглядів 8282 місяці тому
What a special car this is! Part of the incredible John Willment Ford fleet, this was the first Willment Escort Twin-Cam. Mike Crabtree raced the car in the British Saloon Car Championship before it went to New Zealand, to be driven by Jim Richards. This cars story is amazing!
Old Blue Datsun 1200 Restoration - Part 8

I honestly can't think of any reason why you'd actually watch this one. Basically, I remove some old paint from a striker plate and show you some wiring that looks like a vipers nest. But I make it all appear a little bit interesting by dubbing some music over the top.
The Long Lost DTV Viva GT
Переглядів 40 тис.6 місяців тому
This is a bit special! This is one of two factory Vauxhall Viva GTs that became part of Dealer Team Vauxhall. The brainchild of Bill Blydenstein, and driven by the great Gerry Marshall, these cars contested both the British Saloon Car Championship and the B.A.R.C. Osram Special Saloon Championship. Two were built, but only one survives

The Cambridge Monaro

This beautiful HK Holden Monaro GTS is a legend of New Zealand motorsport. Once thought lost forever, it was discovered in 2012, and stunningly restored by John McKechnie, who first fell in love with it as a teenager in 1969! Grimie's Historic MkI Escort
Переглядів 1,7 тис.8 місяців тому
This incredible MkI Escort has race history dating back to the mid-1970s, and was owned by the same person, Rod Grimwood, for nearly 40 years! In addition, Robert van Gisbergen, father of current NASCAR driver and former V8 Supercar driver Shane van Gisbergen was also an owner. This car is an amazing time-warp, having sat in storage for 30 years, but is now back on the track, cutting laps. Than...

Real-Deal Group 5 Zakspeed Escort

This mega-machine is a genuine Zakspeed Ford Escort, as raced in the German DRM. It began life as a Zakspeed Group 2 car in 1975 before being rebuilt to Group 5 regs for 1977. It is a rare beast! And really special. And crazy! The DRM produced some epic machinery, and this is a real-deal survivor. The Last Known Surviving 1969 T/G Racing Pontiac Trans-Am
Переглядів 13 тис.9 місяців тому
T/G Racing was headed by 'Mr Trans-Am' Jerry Titus, and Canadian businessman Terry Godsall, and was the factory Pontiac team in the SCCA Trans-Am series, beginning in 1969. T/G Racing built approx six Firebird Trans-Ams for the 1969 season, and this car is the only known survivor, having gone to New Zealand in 1971 where it enjoyed a hugely successful racing career down-under.
This Car Won The 1972 New Zealand Saloon Car Championship!
Переглядів 1,3 тис.11 місяців тому
This incredible Mini won the 1-1000cc class in both the 1971 and ’72 New Zealand Saloon Car Championships, as well as the outright championship in ’72, driven by Rod Collingwood. It has amazing history, and was saved in 1984 by Gerald Fogg, and now owned by Gerald’s son Angus. And while it’s a rich piece of Kiwi racing history, as you’ll see here, its no cream puff. Angus drives the wheels of t...

This beautiful BMW 318 was campaigned by Vic Lee Motorsport in the 1992 BTCC, driven by eventual champion Tim Harvey in every race except the dramatic season finale, where his team mate Steve Soper took the reigns. The story of this car and the excitement it produced must surely make it the most important 2 Litre Super Tourer of them all? Thumbnail photo by Jarod Carruthers: jarods...

The Unfair Advantage. Great book. Mark Donahue was a natural behind the wheel and behind a slide-rule (I mean hey…they built the SR-71 with one …). Gone way too soon. Wasn’t old enough to enjoy his racing live, but a guy who I’d really like to have known what the future would’ve been like. He was a mad man with the 917.
nothing like off the show room floor
After all that. You didn't start the engine? What a waste of time.
Best looking racing cars ever
Awesome
Ahhhh, an Issix Vee Sex Ingin. 😂
Great stuff that happened as I was a kid. YOu rarely saw any of this on TV, but you had sporting newspapers and then the flashy colorful magazines! There were mags for every discipline of auto racing from F1 to sprints to Winston Cup and German touring and Off Road Rally, Baja, Mint, Dakar, Euro rally - the best color photos in the world btw - Those people were stupid crazy. Penske was a big deal in TA, no different than Ford and Shelby in the 60's with LeMans, Laguna Seca, Daytona~ The only way you knew about it was through print media until Wide World of Sports.
It's not whether U Win or Lose .... It's How U play the Game.
Thats a good looking Torino!
The fuel flapper on the top of the truck allowed for additional fuel to be stored above the 22 gallon tank as well. I saw this as a kid on an episode of My Classic Car.
If you’re not cheating, you’re not trying…
Great content. I was waiting for the story of how they applied vacuum to the master cylinder reservior to retract the caliper pistons for quick brake pad swaps.
Ive seen the camero at Watkins Glenn vintage race in the fall.
super favourite = capri v6 when i was a teenager = i liked a lot but at 16yo the v6 capri was my dream car ! = RS 3100 = thank you Sir !
Wow ,a Mans car ,made for big balls Men to race! ,used to love watching these fantastic cars racing at Pukekohe circuit. The whole family would travel up from Hamilton, spend the whole day there,i would line my nephews and nieces,up to the catch fence for the flying first lap, they tell me now they NEVER forgot that.I have some old photos of the 1979 NZ grand prix ,how can i send you copies? thanks for your video, brings back old memories.
My next door neighbor has one of Penske’s Indy cars.
Can confirm: I worked for Team Penske in the early and mid-1990s, during his Mercedes power era. We absolutely utilized every “creative” advantage available.
It’s not an “unfair advantage” if every team did it too. Almost every one of these items mentioned were all tricks shared by all the teams. It would have been better titled, “Tips and Tricks Racers Use To Get Around the Rules”.
As I understand things, Pontiac convinced the SCCA that Canadian-manufactured Firebirds were constructed with Chevrolet small blocks and thus their use in Trans Am should be permitted. The SCCA evidently bought their argument.
The Trans Am racing was the best of racing. if you get a chance to see vintage racing, it is the BEST
Nice review of Penske's cars. When he made the switch to AMC, I recall him saying "All pony cars are created equal."
And they stuck a basketball inside the petrol tank for homologation, then took it out and had more space for petrol!
That was not a photo of a Challenger T/A.
👍👍
What a sneaky man. Always reading around the rules. He came to Australia and worked with Dick Johnson. Dick took him for a lap around Bathurst. Our most famous racetrack it was a great video.
I helped crew Ian's Alfetta in the early - mid 1980's and know a bit about that car in the configuration it had when last last raced it. It was an amazing piece of engineering and a huge credit to his incredible ability. I often wondered what happened to the car when Ian left for the US. I knew less about Barry's Monaro but remember him taking it to races on the back of a well used Ford D series truck. Although it was never at the front of the pack, he loved what he did and like Ian, was always making improvements to the car. Driven by a huge passion for motorsport, both Ian and Barry were extraordinarily fabricators and their abilities masked the tight budgets they had at the time. It's been decades since I had any contact with Ian but I believe he's still in the US. I'm also sad to hear of Barry's passing. I'd be happy to share what I know about the Alfetta if you wish to contact me.
Hey thanks Tony. Great info! I wrote a book a few years ago called Historic NZ Racing Cars and did a chapter on the Alfetta. I phoned Ian in the US and chatted for a couple of hours. Really cool guy, and one of my childhood heroes
Very interesting! Thanks for the video!😀
Nice.
Chevrolet cheated like mad. Taking two cars to every race they would set out a tent, then bring in car number 5. That car would go through tech and come back while car number 6 was brought under the tent. They would then swap numbers on the two cars send car 5 back through tech with number 6’s decal on it. It would pass tech while the real car number 6, wearing number 5’s badge never got inspected. It was several hundred pounds underweight and who know what other tricks they had under the hood. Theyfinally got caught cheating and once caught they started losing, bad. Chevy pulled their support from Trans Am and moved elsewhere.
You forgot about the dominating AMC Javelins.
What about the Rumor that the Chevy Corvette JL8 4 Wheel Disc Brakes Penske used on these Z28 Race Cars were Secretly Cast Titanium Copies of the Corvette 4 Piston L88 Race and later Corvette CANAM Cars 2 Pin Calipers and the Titanium Rotors were Ceramic Coated Fabricated Copies of the Corvette Rotors to save weight with the Heat Resistant Ceramic Coating on the Rotor Applied by a NASA Aerospace Contractor?
Wonder why they made'em run a '68 front clip on a '69 car? That's one bad mo-sheen!
Great video! "Zed/28" sounds mighty strange. I don't ever wanna hear anyone complain about how we in the US of A say Jaguar again! 😁
The Zed28 is all I ever heard it called until we got American cable tv. It’s just the English language after all. You Americans speak a kind of dialect I guess.
@@blairleighton3343 It sure is, and yes we do. I love dialects. Kinda a hobby in a way.
Would like to see a video on Smokey's Trans Am Camaro too. I think Vic Edelbrock owned it last time I heard. Smokey was another that did some sneaky stuff.
Now that is history!
Why am I hearing snoring?
Vinyl tops !. Ugh, I’d forgotten all about them. Truly one of the dumbest ideas in automotive history as they got wet and trapped the moisture between the top and the roof, which then rusted.
Penske / Donahue / Chevy. A bit of creative engineering and rule book interpretation = success. I’d bet there weren’t any long distance calls to a fellow named Yunick in Daytona Bch. Yeah, if you believe that, there IS a tooth fairy!
Thanks for bringing back great memories!
I'm from UK and it's Zee 28, just like the DRZee
Thanks! One of my favorite years of Trans Am racing and, definitely, my favorite car.
Saw many Trans Am races at Road America - I remember seeing Bobby Rahall driving a Corvette in the Trans Am series
A vinyl top Camaro is lighter and much thinner then normal tops. I own one and replaced the vinyl myself it’s very thin.
Of course general motors cheated. That's the only way they ever win races.
Having a 1969 Z/28 in 1969 and on the street with 4.88 gear, well as Dinah said, see the USA from behind my Chevrolet! Never get away with that racing now.
Spring of 69, cruising through Azars drive in and guy in new 69 Z dog whistles my 68 Z. We go out on the bypass where I beat him 3 out of three. He's got 456's, can't believe it when I tell him I'm running 538's and Headers by Ed. Pretty sure the aluminum flywheel helped too, since we were running from a rolling start. 😱😱
@6or18 oh hell yea, you got it. Thing is the LS motors would eat the old small blocks alive. I have a LS7 in my Vette, but I'd love to have it destroked in a Camaro with a Muncie behind it. The original no lift shift transmission.
Gee, if you only knew what you were talking about.
Did. U. Put. The. Chevy. On. A. Dino. Joe. ?

When did Penske buy the Indiana Motor Speedway? I thought he owned Michigan International Speedway.
2021 he bought Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
I used to work directly beside Bud Moore Engineering. There was a 1970 Boss 302 Trans Am race car that sat in a field beside Buds shop. This car sat there into the mid 1980's.This mustang was really tricked out. Bud had some really smart guy's working for him. And he is really sharp himself. We had 6 Nascar teams or drivers in Spartanburg county.
