For a very short period in 1974 (on a peninsula west of Seattle where I grew up) I owned a US spec Capri 2600. I absolutely loved it. In addition to their excellent handling and decent power they have to be one of the best-looking cars of the era. Thanks for this piece.

Probably the most beautiful race car ever built. The Cossie GAA was a magnificent mill, sounded it and produced the goods. Keeping these cars on the track in top condition is an act of love, dedication, slavery, a road to bankruptcy and slavery to passion. Keep up the good work and remember, you are putting a smile on many faces. Both old and young.

No sorry...!....as much as i like the Capri.....it definately .......was not the the most beautiful race car ever built ......there were many great looking race cars built .....but i would pick the Batmobile BMW CSL ......its main rival .............as better looking ....!!!

Completely agree with you; my all-time FAVOURITE Capri; not as fast as the subsequent turbos, but that's immaterial to me; streets better looking and sounding!

So I think the list order goes something like... Cutty Sark, USS Texas, Flying Scotsman, Lotus 49 and then followed up closely by the 74 RS3100 Capri. All share classic beauty and elicit nostalgic feelings of boyish awe. Thanks for the memories.

Must have the noise restrictors in for those clips. Moffat’s Cologne Capri v6 was the loudest car I ever heard at Australian racetracks. It screamed so loud it hurt. Louder than any 351 Cleveland by far. Even louder than his RX7…

True fact. I recall watching a video about when this car was racing in Europe and the drivers stating that just over 8000rpm it became so piercingly loud they had to clench their jaws.

Allan Moffat was my hero driver at a that time. Maybe not this car but I remember the water cooled brakes were used to dump weight by emptying most the water early in the race and I think rules where made and water cooled brakes disappeared.

I cheered for the dark blue Capri at the US West Coast IMSA races in the early 1970’s. He was usually the lone Ford in the field of BMW’s at the time and represented very well by qualifying and finishing at or towards the front. I’d have to search my old photos and programs to remember the driver’s name. I just know he was very good.

    • @theroaringseason380

That was possibly Horst Kwech. I think Lee Dykstra was involved with that car, the pair teaming up again after working at Kar-Kraft in the 60s. They then went on to establish DeKon Engineering, building the tube-frame DeKon Monza IMSA cars. Allan Moffat raced both a DeKon Monza and the Capri RS3100 in 1976. He too worked with Kwech and Dykstra at Ford in the 60s

I recently saw a You Tube video of a 1967 Trans Am race with all the usual big name drivers ,Jones, Gurney, Donohue etc , as well as Allan Moffat in a privately entered Cougar , I wonder how much Trans Am racing he did ? Another thing I discovered recently was that he was part of Colin Chapman's 1965 Lotus Indy team , although not as a driver.

    • @theroaringseason380
      @theroaringseason380  11 місяців тому +2

Moffat ran a smallish number of Trans-Am races, both in Under 2 in the Lotus Cortina, and in Over 2 with Mustangs and a Mercury Cougar. He played a much greater role as a Ford development driver before moving fulltime to Australia in 1969, taking a new Kar-Kraft Boss 302 Mustang with him

In part one I suggested there were 5 cars built late in 1973 for the '74 season in the DRM and ETCC.
In 1975 Jochen Mass and Klaus Ludwig used one in some DRM rounds.
Also using the Capri RS3100 that year were the Odenthal team and the Weisberg sponsored car of Werner Schommers.
Then there is this car driven by Allan Moffat as outlined.
To my knowledge a fifth car was kept in reserve and is still in the hands of Ford in Cologne.
That last car made a rare appearance at the GFS driven by Jackie Stewart.
I don't claim to be definitive on this, using book sources including that of authors Graham Robson and Jeremy Walton.
Either way, your explianation is excellent and the sound of those very special engines stirs the soul.

@2:13 actually, the Capri's DOHC engine (which used a cylinder head based on the F1 DFV V8) wasnt just "on par^ with but produced significantly more power than the BMV's SOHC unit, which was 3.5L not 3.4L (3.2L on the street car) and produced 375-380hp. Which is why BMW lobbied for and succeeded in getting the GAA-powered Capri banned.

Nice Cosworth heads, thanks for the interesting video. Those V6 Capris were a lot of fun to drive. I guess the modern equivalent would be a G37... Too bad Chevy only put anemic 305 V8s in the Monzas. Many were swapped over to 350 LT1s. I knew a guy with an LT1 in a Monza. He wouldn't let me drive it. Bastich...lol

This might be a false memory on my part but l think Ralph Broad had a hand in these car's development.
One of his rear suspension tweaks was replacing the standard rear leaf-springs with plastic lookalikes whilst using a set of coilovers which Ford had homologated for the RS3100 to aid with 'towing a caravan'.
    Yeah, right... 😊
    Subbed.

Though the Zakspeed turbo Capri was even less of a Capri... I think the floorpan and roof were the only parts that were actually Ford Capri... the rest was a spaceframe racing car covered in a shell that resembled a Capri. ( 1700 Turbo engine? )

The motor for the Capri RS3100 was based on the Weslake unit, whereas the Capri RS2600 used the Cologne unit. But the Group 2 regs allowed for replacement heads if enough were produced, so these were designed and built by Cosworth

That was a 3 Litre V8 with 2 cams ( one cam per bank) and 2 valves per cylinder. 100bhp more with almost the same design?!
