Joker 2 is kinda brilliant and very boring | Movie Review by The Bluff Council
"Joker: Folie à Deux" is one of the most divisive mainstream films since the LAST "Joker," so you know we need to discuss it. It's slow and often boring, but we can't help but respect the audacity. Starring Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga and directed by Todd Phillips. LET'S GET CRAZY.
00:00 - Intro / Keith loves the turmoil
01:03 - What Ev thought
02:28 - What Keith thought
04:22 - This movie might reward repeat viewings
05:46 - The balls this took AKA does Todd Phillips hate all of you for liking the first "Joker?"
12:06 - Ev didn't like "Joker," feels this movie is telling him he's right
19:28 - Thank you Todd Phillips for making something different, even if it's not great
22:15 - Beautiful cinematography
22:56 - Great performances from Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga
25:00 - Will this film's award prospects be hurt by the negative buzz?
26:40 - Film is too beholden to the music, which grows repetitive
29:16 - There is no real story here
33:30 - The ending; we... loved it?
36:47 - Was this always the plan?
40:00 - How much of this is real?
44:28 - Was Harley Quinn the villain or do dummies just blame women for everything?

1939's "The Wizard of Oz" is so iconic it has transcended being "just" a film. It is as much a part of our shared social fabric as just about anything else. It's perhaps the most viewed film of all time. How did that happen? How does it hold up today? Why was it so impactful? LET'S GET INTO IT. 00:00 - Intro / Is this the most important film of all time? 01:45 - Wait Keith has seen this movie b...

It's Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool! It's Hugh Jackman as Wolverine! It's profanity and violence and innuendos galore IN THE MCU!! We did it! We're back! Wait... are we back? It's "Deadpool & Wolverine," the last great hope for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It's smashing records and is a certifiable hit. “American Pie," 25 years later | Movie Review by The Bluff Council

The year was 1999. Amazing films were being released seemingly every weekend, and then came this little R-rated, teen s*x comedy that took the world by storm, filled with hilariously shocking moments and iconic terminology forever added to the English language (and your favorite adult websites). It was immensely successful. It spawned 8 sequels (and counting). It was a HUGE deal. But is it any ...

I can’t take you guys seriously. You get so much of the movie wrong and yet you’re here trying to review it. You miss the entire point of the story and complain it didn’t go in directions you would have preferred. Not understanding the whole premise of him having gills and why that allows him to have access to additional resources and knowledge setting him apart from the rest of the surviving humanity which completely flew over your heads. It’s a story of the basic evolutionary concept of survival of the fittest in a changing environment. His mutation gave him an upper hand in survivability. It had nothing to do with a whole new race of people. The idea that dry land was looked upon as almost a religious belief wasn’t even mentioned. You guys didn’t challenge anything.

Audience: what's so funny Todd Philips: I'm thinking of a joke... You wouldn't get it And most didn't get it... The character of Joker is so complex that any study of him, dramatic thriller, musical or not, is going to be interesting but clearly not understood by all, especially one that is not an actual depiction of him like the dark Knight's

I absolutely believe that Harley wasn’t real (or at least none of their interactions). During the trial someone mentions how Arthur imagined girlfriends in his apartment. There’s no way they would let her go into his solitary confinement. Any external scenes with her might have been just what he imagined she would be up to. And if she’s a split personality, when they try climbing the fence after the fire, they are pulled apart and taken down a *split* road. His first day in court, he’s standing with his back to the judge scanning the courtroom for her and doesn’t see her, probably because she’s not real or not there at all. I love this terrible movie. I love what they did, loved the ending, loved the subversion and the ultimate eff you to incels. I love that he is not and never was the Joker, he really is just some guy who went nuts, but he inspired a guy who would be more of the real Joker. Why did it have to be so long? So many musical numbers that were repetitive and didn’t do what La La Land did where the songs are distinct, thematic, and stylized to convey a specific idea. These just felt like rando tracks from the 60’s and 70’s.

the whole premise of the second film is whether or not he has dis-associative identify disorder. the entire trial, the treatment at the asylum, his only relationship. but this was never even a thing. not in the first movie, and obviously confirmed in the second movie.

I didn't see either movie, but I've watched numerous spoiler reviews on both. From the negative reviews and negative comments, I think it's safe to say that people who loved the first movie saw it as a Joker origin story. So when he gets totally destroyed in Joker 2, they feel betrayed. They thought he was the Joker, and he turned out not to be. If you didn't see Joker 1, I could understand that reaction, but I really can't see it if you *did* see Joker 1. Joker is so much older than Bruce Wayne in Joker 1 that it's obvious we're not dealing with the real Joker. And if you thought that Harley in Joker 2 was the real Harley, i don't think you've been paying attention. The Harley in Joker 2 isn't a sidekick or henchwoman. She's a groupie. She's a cosplayer. Now, from what I've heard, that's not the only problem the movie had. People didn't like the musical aspect of it, and it didn't help that Phoenix and Gaga *intentionally* sang badly. (If you think that's the best Gaga could do, you haven't heard her really sing.) But I think the reviews would've been a lot kinder if people had gone in understanding that they were watching the Rise and Fall of Arthur Fleck, rather than a Joker origin story.

The choices Todd Phillips made were intentional because he had full creative control and ignored notes from James Gunn/DC. When Phillips said recently that Arthur was never the Joker, I was surprised, given that the script for the 1st film clearly states otherwise 🙄 😞

Is gay culture an influence on its longevity? Something like Rockey Horror. Late night showings (defore VCRs) in urban theaters attended by unattached people arriving in cities from small towns they were chased out of and meeting chosen family seems roughly analogous to Dorthie in Oz. And the question "are you a friend of Dorthie?" became a secret password into the community. Just idle speculation, but seems logical. Great discussion.

What a lie, he is exactly what she fell in love with, he has not changed, she has. It is obvious he never was as bright or as driven. She wants him to be something he isn't and can't be. He is a kind person and she is not. miniscule erosion, she thought she was better beginning to end. Again, she is willing for him to be the primary child care person or she is willing to leave the little girl with her grandfather who was tremendously abusive to her mother and to her.

  • @actualkarenokboomer3158

He was not an alcoholic in the beginning. He could never please her because she looked down on him from the very beginning. I think she drove him to alcoholism. Guy on the left is wrong. You are a snob. She knew what he was when she met him and he is a very kind fellow. She knew he had no education, but he is willing to work. Stop trashing him, did you think he was going to suddenly become a genius. He is doing what he can do and he is happy with that. He is not trying to change her. He is having fun with the kid and she doesn't have a problem with him being the primary child care person. On top of that she is willing to leave her daughter with her abusive father. I don't think she cares about the kid.

I agree with the guy who thinks she is the problem and I think she is. First, she was in an abusive relationship before him. I think she thinks he is below her mostly because of his lack of education and she can't stand the fact that he would be fine like they are, but she will never have enough.
