- "Barbie" may be the biggest film story of the year. 1.5 BILLION dollars raked in. Immeasurable cultural impact. So when the director of the film, Greta Gerwig, was not one of the five directors nominated for Best Director at the upcoming 2024 Academy Awards, the streets of the internet were filled with rage. Was Greta Gerwig snubbed? Or were there simply five directors that Academy voters found to be more deserving? Should a film's box office and cultural impact play a larger role in the voting for these nominations?
At the end of our recent Oscars Predictions Spectacular episode, we argued about this very subject. Keith thinks Greta should be there. Ev thinks that the Academy got it right. It gets heated. What do YOU think?

Biggest Oscar snubs 2024
The only director that snubbed recently was DV
100% with Ev. Even though I think the context in which the film was made shouldn’t be taken into account when it comes to giving an award, Anatomy of a Fall is a much bigger achievement than Barbie. The difference in budget, marketing, distribution, and cast popularity is just too much. I’m not from the US, and making movies that are worthy of an Academy nomination outside of the Hollywood bubble will always be harder than using an IP like Barbie with the resources Hollywood productions have. Barbie getting nominated for Best Picture is enough of an acknowledgment for a movie like that, which in my opinion, the impact in pop culture is the only aspect that’s relevant to that nomination. The movie is ‘good’ at best.
Pd: I’m sure your UA-cam channel will grow with time. I’ve been loving your conversations. It’s great to see the difference perspectives you guys have. Cheers!
I could not have said it better myself (and in fact, did not 😄). The nomination IS the honor for a film like "Barbie."
And thank you very much! We genuinely appreciate your comment (and support)! A million thanks for watching. -Ev
I think Greta Gerwig was snubbed because Barbie is considered to be a populist movie, similar to Top Gun Maverick when that was snubbed for Best Director and Actor at the time. Same thing happened with Denis Villeneuve for Dune Part 1.
Whose spot do you think she should take?
@TheBluffCouncil Jonathan Glazer or Martin Scorsese. The Zone of Interest felt like a short film stretched into a feature, and KOTFM was lengthy, and it should have focused on Molly's perspective.
@@TheBluffCouncil Oppenheimer.
If the argument is money made then the Bay should be getting nominated for Transformers or any number of Marvel movie. Hell people dressed up as minions and mario bros. Should they be given noms for average movies.
I don’t know these guys names but the guy with the cap is full of BS … he is overrating the cultural impact and the movie itself is no where as good as the other 5. Totally agree with the guy in the U.T.B top. Besides the only thing that made Barbie great is Ryan Gosling
