    I know this is an old video but Chris what’s your thoughts on intonation while holding it as if you were playing it I’ve always heard to set intonation as if you were actually playing the guitar and don’t lay it flat on its back do you think either way works ? Or do you think it don’t make much difference ?

    • @chrisreynoldsguitarmaking
      @chrisreynoldsguitarmaking 14 днів тому

      @@leaphchausew7277 I have made a neck through, yes. Of my own design. It’s helpful to think of it as a very long neck with wings on it. It helps to avoid a neck with a break angle as this really complicates things. I also used a very low profile bridge so I didn’t have to build up the fretboard height to get the strings high enough. Plan well and take your time. The only critical thing in guitar making is the scale length. Everything starts here.

    Hi Chris. What’s the company you mentioned where you can buy those flawed bodies?

  • @MrGibsn1960
    @MrGibsn1960 16 днів тому

    Chris, we recently had a hurricane run course through Houston earlier this month. Unfortunately it forced us to remove our largest pine tree. I kept two huge chunks of the base of the trunk to cut into slabs and eventually make into a guitar. Wish I could pick your brain on things but I think I’ve got a few years to wait yet.

    • @chrisreynoldsguitarmaking
      @chrisreynoldsguitarmaking 16 днів тому

      @@MrGibsn1960 I’m sorry to hear of your plight. Pine is generally not a great wood to build electric guitar necks out of. But if it’s dense and stable you can make a body or two from it. I’ve seen some successful builds using harder specimens. Spruce is used extensively in acoustic guitar tops but it’s generally very high grade spruce which is a variation of pine. Spruce has individual needles that attach directly to the branch rather than in finger like clusters. To be honest. I would be realistic about what you can use in guitar making.

    • @MrGibsn1960
      @MrGibsn1960 16 днів тому

      @@chrisreynoldsguitarmaking yeah, I’m not sure what it’ll become over time. It was a little over 40 years old with a pretty tight grain/ring structure. My wife was upset about losing the tree so I wanted to do something with it that would be kinda cool and unique. At worst, it’ll become a jewelry box. Haha

    On my relic jobs, I actually tape some 400-600 grit sandpaper (whatever I have on hand that's not too course) and play air guitar with the sandpaper taped to my forearm where it normally hits the guitar. After about 30 minutes or so playing in all the positions and angles I tend to play in, I have my arm relic'ing area. Do the same thing to mimic a guitar stand and also a wall hanger...... you get the picture. And of course knocking off the finish on the surface to just a matt aged look (a lot of work within itself). Then coloring it appropiately, etc... etc... My method has fooled even the most trained expert eyeballs out there. Guess I shouldn't tell all my secrets, but I love to see people succeed in their quest. Great build right here though. Personally, I would have kept it looking like a brand new guitar instead of any relic. Absolutely one beautiful piece you've made never-the-less!
