      Thanks Tony. I’m struggling to make decent bread at the moment. With it being so cold and the energy crisis, it’s hard to find anywhere to leave it to rise and then it’s too expensive to run the oven to cook it. We are considering eating guitars instead. I have so many we could actually burn them for fuel. C

      Thanks Lin. Yes guitar stuff normally has some dreadful thrash metal cobblers hammering away in the background. I deliberately use more mellowed stuff because I watch stuff that just tires me out before I get to the end. Thanks for the recognition. C

    I love Alumitones! They do give a wider frequency range, and they do have a sort of acoustic-adjacent sound. They sound great paired with other pickups too, they really fill out the sound. Every studio ought to have an Alumitone-equipped instrument available. Oh, and they sound great in basses too! Anyway Chris, LOVE your channel. Great work!

      I’m a big fan of Alumitones. They look good, they are very light and they sound unique with amazing frequency range. I think everyone should have a guitar with them in. The acoustic quality is very useful. C

    great amusing video !...my LP Special has the heel. Good for the vibe!

    • @chrisreynoldsguitarmaking
      @chrisreynoldsguitarmaking  Рік тому

      Yes the heel felt necessary to get the union of neck and body feeling authentic. I toyed with the idea of an Ebony cap and making a feature of it before backing off. I’m still not certain how I’m going to handle the neck finish. I’m even considering a fade from the body orange to dark mahogany and even to a lighter shade. I may just busk it and have a play around. I’m even considering a relic orange over a sunburst. Madness.

      @chrisreynoldsguitarmaking  Рік тому +2

      Fingers rule. Best spreaders ever and always very handy. Guitar making is necessarily tactile. You need to feel the glue sometimes and I’m forever finding bits of stuff in the glue that may mess with the joint. They are ‘digital’ too so that’s kind of trendy isn’t it?

    • @chrisreynoldsguitarmaking
      @chrisreynoldsguitarmaking  Рік тому +1

      Hi Ronnie thanks for your support. I’m all for trying to mix it up a bit. Gibson make fabulous Juniors but if I make one I’ve got to try and make it unique. The final look is happening in my head and I think it’s going to be quite striking. I’m not sure I know what you mean about cookie cutter but if you mean it’s not going to be simply a replica then I am on board. What May really mix this up is if I try and make it look like it was really made in the early sixties. That could be very engaging. Beat up Junior’s remind me if the one I wasn’t allowed to buy when I was seventeen. I’ve fallen asleep thinking about that beaten up greeny burst a zillion times. Sobs. C

    Dear Chris, please, use my advice abour mic. You can use a mic which goes to your phone through headphones input. Record the input is easy with any recorder app you have. I know that unfortunately there are not a lot phones with a headset input. Feel free to use iPhone 4, 5. Qiality is at very high point and you are mobile with such recording scheme. And it's pretty reliable too

    • @chrisreynoldsguitarmaking
      @chrisreynoldsguitarmaking  Рік тому +2

      I’ve gone across to Rhode provideo rifle mics. I find lavalier mics dead and characterless. I think you need the ambience in the workshop. The sound of the tools and materials is so important. A lavalier mic is just my voice and there’s already too much of that. Recording separately on an iPhone adds the sort of complexity I could do without. Thanks for your suggestion. But no. Hell no.

    I was very impressed by the fact that you could drill the holes for the bridge posts with a hand drill. Those holes have to be perfectly vertical, and you did it. I would have to use a drill press. Question: I noticed that after you drilled the holes, you pounded in the posts. Later, when you routed the pickup cavity, the posts were not in the holes. But there was no pickup rout when you pounded in the posts. Did you remove the posts?

    • @chrisreynoldsguitarmaking
      @chrisreynoldsguitarmaking  Рік тому

      I’m good at getting stuff straight. I don’t know why. Good spacial senses ir something. Yes I took the posts out to route the pickup cavity. They might have gotten in the way of the template. I wanted the bridge sorted first so I could eyeball where to put the pickup. I wanted the pickup aesthetically positioned slightly further forward than standard as the lace Alumitone is very bright but full range. I figure with just one pickup you want a broader tone. It doesn’t have the vintage roundness of a p90. All excellent questions Tim. I hope I answered them for you. Next episode soon. I’m editing every day. C

    Yesss 24.75” with a straight edge!!! This is the one I’ve been waiting for. Thank you so much for… bridging the gap 😎.
    One question: since I haven’t decided which style wraparound tailpiece I’m going with yet, slanted or straight… Do you happen to know the measurements for the bridge posts if I were to go with the slanted style? Thank you!

    • @chrisreynoldsguitarmaking
      @chrisreynoldsguitarmaking  Рік тому +1

      Woo tricky one. I would assume that the centre pivots around the scale length. I do love the slanted look. The question of slant angle and exact measurements is something I would have to research. There is an LPJ group on Facebook. I bet a posting there would get you a deluge of answers. Some very knowledgeable folks in there. C

  • @tomgillard1262
    @tomgillard1262 5 місяців тому +1

    Hello again 🙂Another question on the placement of the bridge posts. I notice a lot of LP juniors and specials with wrap around bridges seem to have the bridge on a slight angle. How come you were able to position your wrap around bridge saddles in a straight line?

    • @chrisreynoldsguitarmaking
      @chrisreynoldsguitarmaking  5 місяців тому +1

      Because the bridge I chose is compensated and has that angle built in to the saddle/fulcrum point. It’s only the original uncompensated bridges that require the angle. The angle does look cool though. Well spotted and a great question. C

    • @tomgillard1262
      @tomgillard1262 5 місяців тому +1

      @@chrisreynoldsguitarmaking Thanks. What do you mean when you say "the pivotal point of the bridge is on that line that we marked" at around 11:15 in the video? What is considered to be the pivotal point of a wrap around bridge (or any bridge really)? Bridges I've been looking at have quite a bit of space where the strings sit that can be adjusted back or forward (hope that makes sense) so I'm interested to know how exact I need to be in the bridge placement in relation to the scale length. Thanks again :-)

    • @chrisreynoldsguitarmaking
      @chrisreynoldsguitarmaking  5 місяців тому

      @@tomgillard1262 the fulcrum or pivotal point in the bridge it the point of the bridge saddle that starts the beginning of the scale length. The top of the saddle to the inside edge of the nut define the scale length.

    I really want to build a les paul jr for a final project for school. Of course I will have limited time, so how long would you think it takes to make a guitar like this (for someone with no experience)?

    • @chrisreynoldsguitarmaking
      @chrisreynoldsguitarmaking  Рік тому +1

      Hi Kamiel, assuming you have access to the right tools you should be able to make a Les Paul Junior with the right supervision. As to how long? That’s down to you to some extent. I would guess around 20 hours should be enough to get the woodwork done. The problem I see is the fact that guitar making isn’t a race and potentially rushing is a recipe for disaster. I am continually telling myself to slow down. Once you’ve got the woodworking done you have to consider your finish. If you use nitrocellulose paint you need to let it cure for a couple of weeks ideally. But you can probably do that but at home in the garden. It’s a bold project Kamiel and I wish you all the very best with your build. Above all be careful and never cut towards yourself. Big love C
