It's Feeding Day for my California Kingsnake!
It's feeding day for my California Kingsnake. As California Kingsnakes are, Rex has a killer food response and is a really good eater. Sometimes he attacks his prey hard and other times he just eats with better manners. Either way it's always fascinating to watch. It always amazes me how snakes do it. On this particular day it was a very peaceful event.

High Desert Vivarium Inspiration from Northern New Mexico!

American Bullfrog Shedding his Skin and Going Crazy!

Last night I heard splashing in the reptile room and discovered my American bullfrog shedding his skin and going crazy. It's common for frogs to shed their skin. Most species do it about once a week or so. It's usually pretty easy for them, but on this occasion, Lucille was having a difficult time and it made him angry. Enjoy the video. Is this the same snake from two years ago? He seems small! Crazy how much they can vary in size. My Newport cali king is almost five feet long and pretty beefy, while my wifes cali king is barely 3 feet and small like yours. I'm curious about your feeding schedule and temps. I don't use a basking spot, my girl is six this year.

    This summer once I move into my new place I’m going to be setting up a vivarium for my mexican black king snake, and later an arizona mountain king once my mbk outgrows it. I’ve been researching about the area a lot and I’m really excited! I’ve also been stumped on what plants to use but I think I’ll be using a lot of small manzanita swigs that look similar to the sagebrush. I’m also going to attempt to use foam to carve realistic rock features so I hope that all works out.

      Yes, the finex lights are only full spectrum led. Good for plants, but no uvb. If it's a reptile that needs heat I really like the zoomed mercury vapor bulbs because you get heat and uvb and UVA together. It does suck that the lights get so expensive though.

    Just got a tree frog if they dont hunt food is it best to get flyiing insects

    • @WonderfulWorldReptiles
      @WonderfulWorldReptiles Місяць тому

      That’s a good question. I’ve never used flying insects to feed tree frogs so it’s hard for me to tell you about. I put the crickets in the vivarium and leave them, but honestly I’ve never seen either of these green tree frogs go after or take down a cricket once. I did see one grab a snail though. But I know they’re eating them because they are fat and healthy and poop a lot. If it’s a new frog moved into a new enclosure it could need some time to settle in and feel safe so it could go off food for a short time until it gets used to that. If it was me though I would stick with crickets.

    I enjoyed your presentation. I tried out a BP after raising two boas, but it didn't work out. He stayed hidden and wouldn't eat so I gave him back. I couldn't justify a rat giving up its life and then the snake refusing to consume it. That's not nature taking its course. Also, I'm not sure about the bioactive enclosure. It seems akin to digging a hole in the backyard for your dog to live in. I don't mean that as a criticism because it's apparent that you care very much for your animals.

    • @c5365
      @c5365 12 днів тому

      @@Stumpwater27 No. That's not the issue at all. The issue is that wild isopods (or anything wild, really) have the potential to carry parasites, bacteria, or viruses. Now, the chances that the nasties on wild isopods can transfer to dissimilar species like anoles is low, and many people just throw stuff into their vivs from outside and have no issues. Some people have had awful results from that practice - such as giving their frogs infections or unknowingly introducing a whole herd of centipedes that hatched from eggs, then ended up eating all their isopods. Then again, your chances of something catastrophic happening are probably very low. Some people are very cautious and prefer not to take any risks - it really is up to you and how risk-tolerant you are.

      That's a good question, but I'm not sure. Any I've had with just uvb didn't have plants. I've always just added another light for the plants. Strong uvb can burn some shade dwelling plants, but some uvb is probably beneficial for the plants.

      If I were to get the Finex light you recommended would I still need a UVB light for my reptile?

      Thanks. He's so funny. He just like to be in the branches. He doesn't care if he's in a hide or not. He'll even sleep the whole time in the branches whiles he's getting ready to shed instead of curling up in a hide.
