Let Your Material Shape the Outcome (Bowl Carving with Dave Fisher)
Переглядів 1,2 тис.14 днів тому
Dave Fisher explains how he approaches green woodworking by asking what a given piece of wood can/should do rather than imposing his idea on the wood. This is from a three part series taught by Dave Fisher and hosted by Elia Bizzarri: handtoolwoodworking.com/bowl-carving-w-dave-fisher/
Why Paint a Windsor Chair?
Переглядів 1,7 тис.3 роки тому
Curtis Buchanan explains why he paints all his traditional style Windsor chairs and does not offer the option for a natural finish. Counterintuitively, a good paint job on a Windsor chair reveals rather than masks any deficiencies in the making of that chair. Rocker Blades: Quarter Sawn or Flat Sawn?

Drawknife vs. Spokeshave
Переглядів 2,4 тис.3 роки тому
Curtis Buchanan makes his case for using a drawknife over a spokeshave for even fine, shallow cuts. This is from a ten part series co-taught with Curtis Buchanan on building Velda's chair: handtoolwoodworking.com/veldas-chair-class/
Wood Bending (Should You Over-Bend?)
Переглядів 1,5 тис.3 роки тому
Elia Bizzarri explains why steam bending a thick piece of wood can cause it to slightly overbend and how bending chair crests causes concave and convex surfaces on their opposing faces. How the hell have I missed this channel! That's all my evenings filled 😂
Hello Elia, I’m new to woodworking and hope to attend one of your classes in the future. Can I buy a set of plans for your Windsor rocking chair?
Yes, Curtis Buchanan sells them: www.curtisbuchananchairmaker.com/
Thank you guys for the video... Elia I love your simple, useful, bench/kiln... Would love a little more info on your radiant heaters, which ones do you prefer?
I have lots of info on my blog: handtoolwoodworking.com/kiln-heaters/
dude, what?
Oh man! Very informative. Thank you.
Super clear. Super helpful. Thanks!
Hello Elia, I’m new to woodworking and want to develop my chair making capability so your instructional videos are much appreciated, thank you. I’d like to get a drawknife and was wondering if you could make a suggestion of one to buy?
My tool list here has some suggestions: handtoolwoodworking.com/tool-list/
Hello Elia, recently found your channel, I am new to woodworking and enjoy your content. Someday I hope to make a chair. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for this video: very helpful. I’m fixin’ to build a reamer, and I’m garnering all my research.
I love the invasive chair idea. Is there a process for identifying woods and assessing their workability and durability? I live in central america and we're are sort of learning as we go, which is fine but I wish for more accessible information on the characteristics of the local wood. Great content, thanks for sharing so much information.
You can compare their strength properties to a known species like red oak or maple here: www.wood-database.com/ Beef up your parts if the wood is weaker than those. Avoid woods that have the wood/grain listed as "interlocked." Pick a chair design that doesn't have deep bend. Experiment, experiment, experiment (and be willing to blame the wood if something goes wrong).
how do i weld the tang on a vintage spokeshave, like the one you have. i have no welding suff just glue ... and rubber bands? suggestions from anyone will be appreciated..
The first thing is to pick a goog piece to work with of a good species that will split well.
A CBN wheel is expensive, but will never shatter, never need dressing, and will last just about forever if cleaned regularly.
making wood cookies how would u preserve the natural color and keep green wood from cracking?
These tutorials are greeeaaat !!!
These videos are a treasure. Chatting with and getting feedback from a master , wow . Thank you for putting all of these together!
Thank you! Your remark on the double bevel modern metal wedges seems to have been a factor in my last match against an ash log. I have a rematch scheduled for spring so I’ll see if I can improve their shape by then.
Beautiful chair, but authentic English Windsors have different leg angles to look and work right. I don’t know about American. The back legs were splayed back but more parallel. The front legs splayed only sideways. The angle of the back is called the slouch. The seats were originally worked when the wood was fresh, as was the rest of the chair and then final finishing and assembly in the factory or workshop Elm goes rock hard when dry. Ok with modern power tools but difficult to work with an adze and travisher.
Why ur face look like that😭😭😭
You sound congested and premature in your only video. don’t be mean to strangers giving you helpful tips 👍
I live near Victor, NY, in Rochester! I'll have to investigate this company 😊
great tip - thanks
Wow very useful. Thank you sir
It's 2024. I can't believe it took me this long to find your channel. I was looking for more information on how to efficiently use a Froe and your channel came up. More accurately, I was trying to compare a froe to a Japanese nata (double-beveled) to see which would serve my needs best. Thanks for sharing all your information and skills -- it's gold!
Thanks for video! Just bought a vintage Scorp. Going to make a desk chair for my daughter. This was a big help
Thank you, Mr. Bizzari. The eye on a froe is /supposed/ to be tapered & the handle is supposed to be a matching taper. The way a pick or mattock handle is tapered is the way a froe handle is supposed to be tapered. That keeps the tool from working off the handle. A froe is not supposed to be hafted like an axe. An axe handle uses a wedge to 'swell' the handle in the eye. A froe, like a mattock, uses a similar taper but not a wedge. So that's what I heard. Have a GREAT day, Neighbor!
Love "People have been smart for a long time"
Loved this excellent explanation. I learned new concepts instantly from this. Thank you!
Just made my first one. A bit of dog's breakfast. Reviewing the instructions. Maybe the next one will be better!
Thanks
Great presentation. The part about ideal woods for riving with froes is exceptional! I recently brought down a dying Chinese Chestnut and wonder if anyone knows if this might be a good wood for riving with a froe. Thanks for sharing!
I did this Christmas gifts one year, but just taped the corner.
There's that old rumour that the legendary japanese potters behind ming vases finished them off then gave them a tiny tap while they were still wet so they didn't look sorta uncanny ... Never knew whether to believe that one, but if someone made it up I can see why!
It would be great to see you go through the whole process of making a chair Elia. Great vid thank you.
Love the knowledge and skill of Elia. More videos please
I can't see what is happening on the tip of the spoon.
Great video! I'm sorry you don't upload here anymore.
Really useful. Thank you
I have a 12" bandsaw and am thinking of getting a turning bow saw. One practical reason, is I usually keep a 1/2" resawing blade on there, so don't have to change the blade for just a few tight curve cuts.
This young man is a master chair maker not a TV stair .Trained by the best ,Curtis Buchanan. Show us your work sir.
Good video but organic doesn't mean non toxic, lead is organic.. im sure the product your talking about is non toxic but organic doesnt mean the same thing
Lead is definitely not organic, but definitely natural, but things like ricin are organic, so your point still stands
Hey Elia , where have you been ? Enjoy your videos, keep ‘em coming ! Do you do timber frame style woodworking ?
Nice instruction, lovely turning. Thank you.
This was what I was looking for! Thank you!
Where's the video showing the splitting with this wedge? Where does one find these wedges?
Do you have plans to keep making videos? Really enjoy them!
Great tutorial thank you!
