Monton Garden
United Kingdom
Приєднався 25 кві 2022
Started this channel to record the progress of our garden, which is on the west side of Manchester
The garden is based around a large lawn (we have crazy dogs) with planting in raised beds on all sides, along with an island bed. At the time of writing this, we still have lots of work to do which will include the construction of another large raised bed that will incorporate a water feature
The palnting is what many people will refer to as 'Tropical' or 'Jungle style, but I prefer to refer to it as an 'interesting collection of plants'
Living in the north west does create more challenges than those further south, but we do OK!
For everting not garden related, please visit our other channel T&T adventures, link in the links section

Borinda papyrifera CS1046 - aborted culms on recent divisions
This video js about what can happen to bamboo divisions in the first year
This division of Borinda papyrifera was made late last year, a lot of top growth was removed and it was planted in the front garden
It stated to put up some nice culms, most of which got to a few inches in height, then stopped growing
It’s nothing to worry about, the recently divided rhizome can’t support his growth, but then makes smaller culms which grow ok
Same with Borinda KR4175, which was a division that was made earlier this year

A look around one of the island bards in our garden, this area got hammered in the winter of 22/23 but has bounced back, mostly due to me putting a bit more thought into the planting as I probably got it wrong first time round (wrong plants & small plants) The combination of plants has created a canopy of foliage which I really like and it can only get better #garden #tropicalgardening #junglep...

Quick run around our back garden, looking at all the different bamboos that are planted Just for fun and made for the Bamboo UK Facebook group Lots of plants don’t have names, just a mix of letters and numbers Those plants are Borindas and most were collected from the Himalayan region in the late 90’s and early 2000’s by Chris Stapleton and Keith Rushforth. So the plants start with the collecto...

Kalk met magnesium geven❤
Gooi maar stenen onder en brekers zand door grond❤ 😇
Did you feed it to get it to that size?
Not much, but it is in a very rich compost and manure mix
Как називаеться это растениии??...
Ensete ventricosum’Hiniba’
Great video, just subbed 👊 awesome garden mate
Cheers, thanks for subscribing
What is that beautiful plant over your right shoulder in the beginning of the video?
It’s Ensete ventricosum 'Hiniba' I made a video about it a few weeks back
Sad i cant get them easily here in norway wee have a stuqid rule with importing plants u have to be a civilian and just import plants u have to be a business to import plants. Its a strugle to find tropical plants here
It’s harder now in the UK after Brexit, but we can usually get most things, just some plants that are 40 euro in Europe, can be 120 euro in UK now
Brilliant!
Thanks!
Spotty one looks similar to one that I’ve got. It’s called Milky Way.
Thanks for the info
You cut the foliage off - that's where I went wrong this winter!
Yeah, and most of the root, pot up, don’t water much, then start in spring and it will start again I think it was in something like a 50L pot over winter Still a big plant to move though
@@montongarden Thanks! You must have a stong back and an even stronger garden fork! If you want to see the sorry state my banana was in there's a video on my page called Greenhouse Reveal - it'll give you nightmares!
@@PlasBachGardenit wasn’t too bad last year, but was heavy, that’s why I’m not sure about doing it again
@@montongarden Good luck with it!
Looking Awesome!!!!
Yeah, it’s impressive
Awesome video, great information and so nice to see and compare mature specimens. Given that they are all collected from the same area, are they distinct species, or are they hybrids of one species that have cross pollinated over time to produce plants of varying hardiness and appearance?
Thanks! As far as I know they are distinct species and to pollinate they need to flower and the intervals between flowering are very long. Unlike more common bamboos where flowering records exist, they don’t for many Borinda That’s not to say they haven’t flowered and created hybrids in the past They have only been in cultivation in the west for around 30 years which is not a long time when compared to many other plants in our gardens, some are still learning about them
How interesting. Thanks for the reply
Great video , thanks for putting this together.very informative 👍 will watch it again no doubt !
Thanks Rob!
Weg lopers af steken in pot voor verkoop😂❤😅
Yes, I’ll be potting a few up, not everybody wants a vivax though, people are afraid 😀
Amazing looking canes!
Yeah, it’s looking good now!
Ive just got a Rodgersia podophylla 'Crûg Colossus' from jersey cottage, where would you say is best to plant it, i do get a lot of sun in my garden so dont want to kill it 😳
Definitely in a shady spot, cool and shady is best they are woodland plants
I am properly jealous of this garden ! It really does have an incredible jungle look.
Thanks, it’s still got a lawn, but the beds are really wide, so that probably helps Two dogs and lots of grandkids saved the lawn!
@@montongarden Haha yes its always good to have a lawn. I have chipped away at it a little, but not to the extreme! tbf I reckon the dog and kids would love it all as jungle 🙂
When do you divide? You talk about sawing, do you use that curved blade?
I divide early spring or just after new culms have come up and hardened off, latest is probably early autumn Most plants will divide with the digging bar and spade, but if it’s very compacted, I’ll get a small saw in
Is it true that snakes are looking to live near bamboo
Maybe, but not in the UK, although we do get Adders
Could this work as a houseplant?
Better outdoors, hard to get the right conditions indoors It’s an herbaceous plant so needs to die back in winter
Where can you buy the seeds?
They are usually available earlier in the year from specialist sellers, best to try the various tropical plant groups on Facebook for more info
'Bulldog' digging shovels etc do a gr8 range of HD tools. A mature stand of bamboo can be like concrete when you have to break it up.
That’s where the digging bar comes in I’ve split some huge plants over the years and I believe these are the best tools! Some of the huge Borindas that are 20 years plus that we have been taking divisions from recently have been a good test
Great collection of bamboo
Thanks, it’s addictive
brilliant vid buddy but how do you get the numbers and do you mix bamboo to make new species and how ?? thanks
Hi, thanks for the comment The numbers are collection numbers A lot of Borinda were collected in the late 90’s, early 2000’s by Chris Stapleton and Keith Rushforth, so the numbers of the plants they collected start with their initials and then a number, for example CS1046, which is also known as Borinda papyrifera and KR4059, also known as Borinda frigida, but most don’t have names, just a collection number It’s not possible to create new species unless they flower which is not very often
That’s amazing, how old is the clump? Mine are very much thinner than this and putting out new culms like crazy, my clump was 4 culms when I got it last year and is now 29 strong, but very skinny.
It’s in year 3 now Planted in 2021 You’ve got pile on the food for these plants, they are very greedy Once the new culms are up, more feed as they are making rhizome and food growth at that stage will mean good culms next year
@@montongarden brilliant thank you, out of interest what do you feed yours and at what frequency? I’ve been piling manure on it up to now, did you use liquid seed also? I’ve read they don’t like seaweed feed.
I just make sure there’s always manure in the plant and also throw grass cuttings on as well, keep it fed and keep the heat in the soil I don’t use liquid seaweed, I read many years ago that bamboo have a dislike for sodium, which LS contains
my guess on the aspidistra would be zongbayi ‘Uan Fat Lady’ and either daibuensis 'Totally Dotty or oblanceifolia 'Nagoya Stars' on the spotty one,,I have a few aspidistra in pots that I really need to sort out and tidy up
Thanks for the info!
good to see you managed to source the kaleidoscope, remember you asking on one of the FB groups a few days after I`d just sold a division of mine...love them but along with some of the coniogramme ferns get massacred every year by the effing molluscs.
I don’t seem to have problem with those in the ground, just the ones in pots!
Cảm ơn ban nhiều lắm chia sẻ video hay quá ❤
Thank you
Lovely specimen, may I ask, how to you keep them growing so straight, mine comes out in all angles. Also do you cut out the thin culms? Mine has culms of all thicknesses and I’m hoping it starts producing thicker ones, it’s on its second year in the ground. Thanks for the help.
Hi, this is year 3 and yes I will thin out the older culms, very soon You always get the odd culm that grows at an odd angle but most are straight
@@montongarden thank you, are the culms growing out at a 45* angle the edge of my current rhizome! Do you just prune your thinnest culms after removing damaged ones? And does bamboo reshoot from where you prune in the future?
It looks so much better than mine. Guessing mine is the micro propagated version. Why are they different then? Micro propagated ever get as good?
Lots of micro prop plants about, some of mine are getting bigger now and look very scruffy with lots of leaves on different growing points There does seem to be a lot of variation in the micro prop plants
Nice Vivax! Great 👍🌴
Thanks
Lovely plant. I have them as a privacy screen running along a border. planted 14 months ago and it's booming this year. loves to grow!!
Yes, they grow well once established, but you’ve got to keep an eye on them!
Świetny jest Vivax, i ma piękną barwę. A zwłaszcza, gdy jest młody😊
Yes, great contrast between the bright yellow culms and the dark culm sheafs
what zone are you in? how cold yoor winters get?
Zone 8, can get cold, doesn’t make any difference with these, it’s summer heat that helps more
Wow its almost filled it .
Yeah, only skinny culms around the outside, some will come out as I’ll be making some divisions later this year
Root barrier ?
No, it’s in a built up bed made of sleepers, I’ll keep it in check on the wall side
@@montongarden I'd be care with your neighbours side, I have the same sort of fencing with my garden, I'm not sure how deep that concrete goes
@@zachfevans I’ve been growing bamboo for over 30 years and probably have around 30 types in the garden You’ve just got to keep an eye on it, it’s easy Problems arise when you leave it Like I say in the video, they are not plants you plant then forget about! But thanks for the advice

Greetings From Ireland, Beautiful looking garden, Its the bees knees.
Hi, thank you, always nice to get someone else’s perspective
Keep the pond away from the bamboo because of the leaf litter! Put some Hornwort (Ceratophyllum) in the Water for Oxygenproduction. Newts like waterplants.
Thanks for the advice! Hard to find anywhere in the garden where bamboo leaves won’t be a problem And we will be using oxygenating plants, not started to look at them yet, got to get that hole started first Had enough rain to fill the pond twice over!
Hey where did you get the john Phillips from please 🙏🏼
I think it was from Barracotts nursery in Cornwall
Nice shoots
Yeah, and lots of them on this and my other bamboos
What time of the year is the best time to divide bamboo?
I look forward to seeing the wildlife pond, should fit fantastically well with the rest of your garden. Great tour, really enjoyed this thank you.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it The pond is full of water now with all the rain we have had, hopefully get the hole dug out this week
Great thanks for this. Does this apply to Waggies also? My flowers look exactly like the female ones shown here.
I’m sure it does!
Should be interesting to see if you get plants growing underneath if fertile seed falls to the ground etc.
I cleared the area around the plant so I can see if I get any seedlings, I’ll probably put some fresh compost around it to help the process
Prefer your pronunciation 😂 it’s not from me in Mold north wales, deffo going have to drop in when I’ve got a wedge of cash and the missus is out 😂
It’s a great place to visit, the owners are very knowledgeable and they have some great plants
