In this video I work for three and a half hours on a beautiful vintage Valgine stainless steel ETA-based day date. I originally purchased this watch, which dates back to the 1970s, in October 2023 for 103 Chf on Ricardo. I discovered upon receiving it that it was struggling to run and that its movement was completely drenched in oil. In this video I swap out its ETA 2789 movement for a 2789-1 t...

Is it Possible to Make a 1mm Diameter Pinion on a Vintage Watchmaker's Lathe?

In this video I use a mid-century W12 watchmaker's lathe, plus an even older Boley watchmaker's lathe, to try to copy a tiny "modern" pinion. This was more of a tolerance test than anything because I thought it would be impossible with the tools and cutters I'm currently working with. I was right, but it's also clear to me that it should be possible with a dedicated gear cutter. #restoration #w...
Design Evolution from the Verge Fusee to a Modern Watch Movement

In this video I compare an Adolph Schild 793 watch movement from 1966 with a verge fusee movement from the mid-1700s. Besides the keyless works in the AS 793 and some minor reconfiguration of the mainspring and train of wheels these two movements operate on very similar principles. #restoration #vintage #watchmaker #switzerland
Using Vintage Tools to Make Watch Parts

This was my first attempt at making a pinion. Pinions are made of steel rather than brass and are smaller than wheels. This makes them much more challenging to make. But challenging is what it's all about! If I didn't fail the first time I would fail the second or third time. That's the joy of watchmaking!!! 😂😂😂 There's a link to my index driver project with instructions and software on my webs...

Hi from Kazakhstan. Thank you for the video. I love old watches but am no expert, though I have bought a few old Soviet ones over the years here at small second hands shops just for their energy and history. I would love to visit Arafat at the Geneva market one day. He seems to have good energy and quite relaxed .
Thanks for this comment! I'm no expert either, and for me also energy and history are the most important aspects of watchmaking. And yes Arafat is great! If you didn't see my video about the MIH I also met him there: ua-cam.com/video/K3IFTtDS3Cc/v-deo.html
Hunting the Favre Leuba, they also had a depth guage diver & a barometric model as well as a almost mythic 20's monopusher chronograph.
Plus that double barrel movement! I'm still looking!
You handle watches like a big gorilla.
Thanks! As you may know Gorillas actually have surprisingly nimble fingers: ua-cam.com/video/oZJz80T1JDk/v-deo.html 😂😂😂
Dude, chill. Is just a watch.
That square Enicar day date watch has got the Enicar AR147 movement. A very fine movement that you should try serving sometime, if you havent already. 😀
No Enicar this time? I would have bought that vintage Fortis. 😀
At the beginning I mentioned that I was going back to check prices with the vendor from the previous video. That was specifically to check on his Enicar prices! Unfortunately we got started a bit late and he was already gone by the time we went looking for him. I've noticed that several of the watch vendors start packing up as early as 3pm, I think because much of the action at the flea market is first thing in the morning. The serious buyers arrive early for first looks.
Very interesting! I like all your clips. I wish I would be there with you to pick up something.
The great thing about Plainpalais is it's always open (every Wednesday and Saturday). Arafat only goes when the weather is nice and when he's not traveling, but otherwise you can find him there year round. (There's also a farmer's market on Sunday but it's a different set of vendors.)
You live in a watchmakers paradise
11:55 we can see a wonderfully long German composite: "Hohlgewölbtpresst.[empel]" meaning "concave domed push dies" At 14:07 it says "zum zusammentreiben" which means "to close down" [a hole] in this context
Funnily enough, AMZWATCH's replicas are perfect for people who can actually afford a luxury watch. Because in those social circles, it wouldn't matter and everybody would just assume it's real. You have a yacht and a beach house in Tuscany, of course that replica is real. There isn't a millionaire out there going around with a jeweller's loupe to scrutinize their acquaintance's watch. They'll just go "Oh is that a Patek? Nice, I should really get my hands on one of those, they look great."
Why do watchmakers' lathes have a belt drive and not a motor with a direct speed regulator?
Thanks for the video. Is that chinese roller remover worth the money at 39 euro? Does it do the trick? Thanks

I wonder if they got made in China stuff 😂
Of course they do! Just look at all the Swatches and cheap quartz watches in the suitcases that the two serious bargain-hunting horologists are rifling through at 39:34! 😂😂😂
Orda olsam aklımı kaybedebilirdim😅 saatler çok güzel
Yes, it's crazy. I bring my camera to protect me!
Dayton, in another one of your videos you mention a booklet that outlines all the flea market and watch fairs in Switzerland and France, but I cannot seem to locate that. would you mind replying with the name of that booklet and how one might obtain it?
Sure, it's in this video at the timestamp of this link: ua-cam.com/video/vl_6Z2M3Vks/v-deo.html
BTW, it includes some of France, Germany, Italy, Holland and Austria in the back of the book, but definitely not all. I think that the individual markets probably have to pay for the listings so there is a focus on important watch fairs but it's not 100% comprehensive, even in Switzerland.
@@IMakeWatches excellent, Thanks man.
I been in Swiss land , went to the flea markets but didn't buy a lot ,the problem for me is that everything is damn expensive, it's a wealthy country swiss franc is up, and locals greedy as f**k 😂 , unless you are really on a hunt for particular piece and got lucky 😢 P.S. Those hand removal bars is easy to fix to the size you need , no problem to make a matching pair of a different ones. But like i said Bergeon ones of a eBay gonna cost you less than swiss flea market ones 😂😂😂
Yes, and the businesses, including the flea markets, are all catering to rich tourists. The one advantage here is there are more vintage tools here than the market can absorb, so if you are into watchmaking as a hobby or as a student it can be fantastic for tools.
@@IMakeWatches , Agreed, the best flea market for me was in NY Manhattan back in the days, people down to earth really cool watches nice prices, they used to rent out parking garages on weekends best days 😂 but no good watch tools ,just a simple stuff .
@@alexkastano96 I was there. I lived in NYC from 1984 - 2000. My first roommate in NYC was obsessed with the parking lot flea markets and we used to go all the time. There was also a huge indoor flea market in Chelsea that he took me to once. I don't know what the economics of that was because retail space was not cheap - it may have been a space like the space that Sam Flax was in that was rented out to a parking lot flea market while it was in transition or up for rent -- like the Halloween stores pop up in vacant retail spaces. Are you still in NYC and is there anything like that today? I go back regularly but I haven't seen anything. Lots of empty retail though!
no bargains? so it's better ebay without the hassle of the rain
Yes, and watch my video in a second window while you're on Ebay (for the atmosphere!)
i made a screw! 🤣 to 99.9% of people, that is not very exciting, but for us, it most definitely is! great video! work on those gravers though, kinda painfull to watch 🤭 or look for a cross slide!
Thanks! Yeah, I've got much better gravers now, and sharpeners, and a cross slide! I think it's fun to focus on firsts. That gives me an excuse to why my videos are so bad! But I'm secretly getting better at everything! 😂😂😂
Just looked at your channel and saw you also filmed some of you casting firsts! Nice!
@@IMakeWatches gotta start somewhere!! :) i'll be bingewatching your other video's soon, i think i'm behind!
One of those braille watches was the start of my downfall in 1984. Buying that watch has lead to 40 years of collecting watches keeping me broke for a lifetime!!
Ha! I have a braille watch too. An Arsamatic with, I think, an ETA 2742 (in any case it's an ETA automatic). I haven't opened it yet but I'm curious to look at the cannon pinion and seconds arbor. Since it's an ETA even though it no longer has a seconds hand I can easily replace it back to a normal set of hands and dial. I just have to find some other reason for the pop-open crystal. Perhaps a skeletonized ETA 2841 with no dial at all would be fun to put in that case. Pop it open and you're looking right into the heart of the movement!
The gold IWC watch is very nice.
I agree!
You should have bought that gold Longines on the spot, if he let it go at scrap gold value. You could have flipped it for at least 500$ more, maybe 1000$!😂
Or I could have kept it for 20 years and sold it for many multiples of that. That's the main point about gold watches. The investment value of the gold is the same whether it's in the form of a watch or bullion. No one should melt these things down!
Wow…
That Fevre Leuba is unusual, the dials don't hold up usually & very few were sold in EU, they also have a twin barrel movement Im trying to track down. Just on a vintage tip those Enicar "Star Jewel" movement are very very robust, as are the Cymaflex movements, lotsa 60's ones still running. Avia & their many many sub brands (Corvette etc) tend to be a problem to the extent I wont buy them any more even if they are clean & running.
Nice info! Thanks for sharing! I didn't know about the Farve Leuba double barrel movements! Just looked that up on Ebay - must have! I'm going to have to visit that vendor again with my case back opening tool and some cash!
@ Yeah, they shifted to ASchild i (I think) the mid sixties, I have a lovely one of those. Also some say FL are older than Blancpain....😉
oh wow what a lovely Ginsbo:-) 10:39 they are from Günsberg/Solothurn.
oh sorry you already know everything, I was just so excited to see a Ginsbo;-)
Yes, I'm a Ginsbo fan too! Most of them that I've seen are built like tanks and the long relationship with the tunneling and construction company Marti speaks to their durability as its workers need the toughest watches made.
that Tudor Advisor was really nice...NFS??
I agree. I've always wanted an Advisor. But what does NFS stand for?
Does anyone know who the first stall holder is with the Ulysse Nardin with box?
I do. Feel free to email me for the info!

@@IMakeWatches Hi, I sent you an email but I haven't received a reply.
@@8ttiknio8 I replied to Adrian at the rogeraroger address on Nov 25. Is that not you?
I love that watches my friend👍
I have been to Geneva many times but constantly forget about the flea market. Will try this December because I hope to find a 30mm incabloc case since I need to salvage a bezel ring for a vintage breitling
It's a fun flea market but there's usually only three or four watch vendors - my friend Arafat, who appears in the Horlo'troc/MIH video, the old guy in this video, and a couple of other old guys. Several of the general antique and junk vendors also have a few watches, but not big collections. It's not Le Landeron (which is only once a year), but it is twice a week (Saturdays and Wednesdays). Give me a shout if you make it over in December!
@ Appreciate the information. I will be in Geneva from 27th of December until 29th.
@@theshadowman1398 Saturday the 28th should be a good day for Plainpalais! If you'd like to try to meet there leave a comment or email me a few days before!
There's not a watch there I wouldn't buy looks like heaven for watch junkie's
I know what you mean. A friend of mine once asked me which watch I would buy if money was no object. I answered that I'd first buy a storage facility the size of a football stadium and then I'd buy all of them. 😂😂😂
they have like 30 Favre-Leuba Geneve Sea Chief's for under $100 on Ebay and they look good. All coming from India sellers, I am absolutely sure they are authentic lol.
I just looked at those. I've never seen those bright green and blue-green dials in Switzerland. But some of the non-florescent ones in bad shape are probably legit, but they were sold to Indian market so they're probably not the best quality even if they are legit. (Not that the one in this video is any better. It would be hard to say without seeing the movement.)
@@IMakeWatches True, I definitely see a lot of really nice vintage great condition watches coming out of India on Ebay at about 30% of the ask price of every other dealer not in India or China. I am highly suspicious
with enough money, people stop crying about watches and care about their lifestyle.
Wrong! They just buy more expensive watches! 😂😂😂
@@IMakeWatches also true lol
23:04 Lol that raincoat
I know. I had to.

It helps to film it! Keeps me too busy to buy anything!
Hi from s.korea.excuse me but the woman by you is from Asia?
Yes, Taiwan!
Thanks for putting the prices in. Others forget or don't bother to.
Sure! With the flea markets and watch fairs some vendors size you up before giving you a number but when they make the price public so do I.
@@IMakeWatches Love the market stuff, at least your camera doesn't induce movement sickness.
