Music is one of my least favorite movies I’ve ever seen purely because of its portrayal of autism. Laios, Falin, and Kabru (maybe even Toshiro but that’s debatable since we don’t know him as much) are fantastic ASD rep. Easily rank the highest among the characters here. Unlike other series where there’s only really one neurodivergent character, Dunmeshi has multiple so it can explore the depths of being neurodivergent way better. It feels like a series meant to explore the life experiences of people who aren’t talked about (neurodivergent people, those with mental health issues/trauma, living in a world where you’re seen as less than based on race, etc.). @@noahthe0tter I think Elsa's a great character but I don't think she actually fits in the Autism category given the fact that there were no signs of autism shown. Personally I don't blame Elsa for not learning how to control her powers at all. I blame King Agnarr and Queen Iduna since they isolated the two sisters causing Elsa to hate herself for years and years. As Gill has said "Fish aren't meant to be in a box, it does things to you." The biggest reason why Elsa ran away in the first place is because she didn't want to hurt anyone around her because she has a good heart. I could go further in depth about why I think she's a good representation of anxiety and self hatred but it would kinda drag.
To me, she always felt more in line with aro/ace type of coding instead of ND. A lot of people conflate the two and headcanons for both those things tend to overlap.

she clearly has a hyperfixation on both law and fashion and doesnt understand social cues. idk. the take haver in this video just doesnt understand that not every autistic girl acts like luna lovegood
Wait what??? You think Elsa is a poorly written character in general?? Why??? Maybe this is just me coming from a very queer perspective and relating to her extremely strongly buuut I think in general she is a very nuanced and complex character. She's controlled by her fears and anxieties due to her trauma of having accidentally hurt her sister when she was very young. She carries that guilt and that fear with her for all her life and completely shuts her sister out, not because she dislikes her but because she is so afraid of hurting her again that she doesn't want to get close to her ever again. Or anyone at all, for that matter. Even after their parents die, she keeps everything inside. And when Anna tells her she got engaged to a man she just met, Elsa becomes afraid that HE might hurt her sister, which is why all the repression and trying to hide who she really is breaks away and her ice gets unleashed in an uncontrolled way. And then with let it go, she can finally leave the prison cell of her own making, her little room, and start exploring her powers and feelings because there's no one around who can get hurt. She's free from the burden of keeping the secret and keeping everything inside. She unleashes her creativity and breaks free from the pressures she was under. She can finally just be instead of pretending to fit in and acting like she's like everyone else. And only when Anna comes back, do her fears take control of her again. At the end she realizes that she isn't the thing that is dangerous, it's her fear/ her trauma. And don't get me started on Frozen 2 where she finds herself in even more profound ways. Elsa is one of my favourite characters of all time. She's definitely far from poorly written as far as I'm concerned.
Something that’s kinda odd to me is that this list has canonically autistic characters (eg: music, ferb, good doctor) and autistic-coded characters (eg: Pearl, Tails, papyrus). I feel like there’s a difference in writing between intentionally autistic characters to autistic-coded characters (like how they’re handled and subsequently how they’d be tiered), so I’d make those separate tier lists. Also, I’m not entirely sure how you’re tiering these. Is this purely based on how much you like them or how good of autistic rep or not?
Yes, this is purely based on how I feel the character comes off on screen and potentially to the audience at large, since if a character is written poorly, it often doesn't come across well to people watching the film, and fails at being a good autism rep
Regarding the tierlist not including certain characters I’m pretty sure tiermaker has an option to add additional images to the list so you could’ve screenshotted the characters and snuck em in anyway.
To be honest as One who had a mom watch the good doctor I’m surprised I didn’t stop sooner. The I al a surgeon meme when that part came out I was so mad at that show I stopped watching soon after. As an autistic and adhd person All I want is a autistic character that isn’t stereotyped for liking trains or just horrible rep. I honestly agree with Sheldon bc he gets away with and is just rude in BOTH SHOWS! Good ranking overall I can’t wait to see more of you’re videos in my spare time.
Thank you very much! Tbh, given the amount of questions I have gotten, I'm considering dedicating a full video to what The Big Bang Theory does wrong for autism representation, since it does come up a lot of course. Kid Danger: *wearing his mighty pup movie outfit and gets surprised* hold your nubian goats! Fluttershy, my pony friend who invited me to the great galloping gala, has autism?! What?! *looks confused*
Elle Woods deflects societal norms and is oblivious to social cues. She's also almost unwaveringly positive and has autistic empathy. I love Legally Blonde.

Only just started the video so could be wrong, but looks like it’s missing my boy Judah from Bojack Horseman who I personally think was really good representation. There’s even a scene where PC is frustrated over events while Judah keeps jumping through things like they are assignments without fully registering PC is upset, and this happens PC:Jesus Christ Judah, do you ever read a room?! Judah:I’m…sorry, is this a bad time? PC:is midnight on New Years Eve a bad time, I don’t know? Why don’t you run that through your robot analysis protocol and get bad to me once you access the data! Judah:I am…not a robot; I am a human being Judah is constantly monotone, has trouble understanding sarcasm or fully getting when someone is upset at him, has extreme interest in music and work to the point he spent the entire day working at one point and questioned when it turned to Night, etc. but that scene hit me because genuinely was trying to help and people with autism can be compared to robots because of how we can act. There’s another incident where she gets upset at him for making a huge decision on her behalf without telling her(in fairness, he thought he was helping because he didn’t want her to make a rash choice) and she accuses him of things like not wanting to work with others because “you’re weird” which was another thing that struck hard because…yeah. It can be hard to work with others due to odd habits and be accused of being antisocial or weird. Thankfully later on PC got back on friendly terms with him
I’d also say Japan in Hetalia, though possibly half the cast there can be coded lol Thankfully each episode only five minutes so it’s easy to breeze through, but Japan always struck me as coded because of his interests to stuff like minimization and his struggles with social cues to the point of having an arc of living with America and both being introduced to new stuff but also having to deal with an incredibly extroverted person who gives him no personal space and half listens at times

I’m a little sad that you didn’t recognize Snufkin (5:43). He is one of my favorite fictional characters of all time from the Finnish Moomin franchise, which is jam-PACKED with queer-coded and neurodivergent-coded characters, all of whom were heavily inspired by the author Tove Jansson’s real-life relationships throughout her childhood and adulthood. Snufkin, who was actually based on an ex-fiancé Jansson was dearly close to, is very independent and introverted, is almost never seen without his hat and beloved harmonica, and leaves his friends behind every winter to embark on his own adventures, only to reunite with them when spring returns. He dislikes being around too many people for too long, is sensitive when it comes to receiving comments or facing big changes in his surroundings, and absolutely despises authority figures with control over the land and rules. Snufkin doesn’t appear to be on the spectrum too much in the famous 90’s anime (which the screenshot is from) since he’s a bit more mature, but it’s a lot more visible in the 2019 series, as well as some older tv adaptations, like the 1959 German series and the 1978 Soviet film trilogy.
I don't know got to disagree. Primarily ranking by if people are cool characters or not and immediately excluding reperesentatives of neurodivergence that are too extreme? Also not having watched some of the primary shows with the best neurodivergent characters so they were in the don't knows. I'm pretty jealous that you've got all of those to watch Stephen Universe, Community, Stranger Things, She Ra, Frieren! All great. The Good Doctor and Sheldon are pretty good representations of ASD on the more extreme end and you may not know people who have had meltdowns or particularly obnoxious concequences of hard rules or compulsions but they exist and it's good to have representations of those extremes and how we can still function in society regardless of that. How people can deal with the downsides and not just the "Oh they're got special interests and are really smart" side of stuff.
I didn't rank them on whether they were cool or not, I was looking at how positive of a portrayal it is. Speaking as someone who is autistic, I am well aware of the negative things that can come with it, as well as the good, and it's important to keep both in mind at the end of the day. However - the issue I have with The Good Doctor and Sheldon, is that they don't show a lot of traits that really make the audience want to understand them, or get behind them. To me - that IS what a neurodivergent coded character SHOULD be doing, in order to encourage more understanding and awareness just in general. They both do not do that, in my opinion.
a little confused why you questioned Sherlock Holmes being on the list. I mean THAT Sherlock is not good, but the character of Sherlock is most definitely ND
The books were written before people knew about autism. Like the late 1800's, I think. But Arthur Conan Doyle could have been someone or known someone who would be considered autistic in present day. I read some of the books and I can see it.
How is Mulan an ND coded character? I'm not upset, just confused. The only ND traits I can see are masking (which is a part of the plot more than character), and that she occasionally finds solutions to obstacles through unconventional methods. To me that last one is just a sign of intelligence more than anything else.

Interesting! I should rewatch MLP then it sounds like - I don't remember enough about her. and yes, Owl House rules haha

i 1000% agree with elsa's placment
Legally Blond. She could easily be a high masking ND woman, or not.
she clearly has a hyperfixation on both law and fashion and doesnt understand social cues. idk. the take haver in this video just doesnt understand that not every autistic girl acts like luna lovegood
3:16 me being escorted out of the goth night club
Hahaha
Sadly there isn't any anime/manga reps here, but two of my favorites are Laios (Delicious in Dungeon) and Asa Mitaka (Chainsaw Man)
Asa added to the next list!
Even though it isn't confirmed Mob in MP100 is great representation if you believe that head canon
Will be doing another tier list eventually also, using characters I see suggested in the comments of this video
@@noahthe0tter ooh!
@@noahthe0tter I heard that Sheldon wasn't meant to be autistic, it's just that the actor played him like that
Kid Danger: *wearing his mighty pup movie outfit and gets surprised* hold your nubian goats! Fluttershy, my pony friend who invited me to the great galloping gala, has autism?! What?! *looks confused*
There’s a really well-written video essay on here that talks about how Gundham Tanaka from Danganronpa is very ND-coded, and…yeah, I’d have to agree.
@@shukuchishikeishuu9540 I did cover Gundham in my autistic characters in gaming video!
@@noahthe0tter Oh damn, really? I’ll have to check that out, then. Thank you!
just a note: the Ghoulia in your "Don't know" category is from Generation one, not three. just keep that in mind if you wanna watch Monster High😉
Elle Woods deflects societal norms and is oblivious to social cues. She's also almost unwaveringly positive and has autistic empathy. I love Legally Blonde.
I like how some people hc Mayushii as autistic because she's a bit infantile, but the real answer was her best friend all along
Ohhh interesting! I didn't know people put Mayushii in that category also - I do plan on doing a follow up video with characters i see in comments on this video, so I'll add her as well then
Hey! I think i remember commenting once about Gin Ibushi from "your turn to die" and im wondering if you've gotten around playing it?
It's ok if you haven't tho, it's quite long but has a really great story
And ive heard that people were really happy when he was confirmed autistic
Also I think ive heard Maomao from apothecary diaries is Neurodivergent coded🤔
I will add them to the next tier list then! Thank you so much! I appreciate it!
An autistic character that needs to be brought into the conversation is Max in Parenthood. The TV show producers claim to accurately represent autism but they failed.
Wow, another genius video! I agree with most of your takes here. I think the only one i kinda disagree with is Sheldon - i actually like him
That's fair! To each their own, like I said in the video
Not me sobbing bc Wally darling isn’t on the list
I'll add them to the follow up list! What are they from?
He’s from an interactive website called welcome home! Wally is shown to have many autistic traits. I highly recommend checking the website out! There’s lots of secrets and fun characters!! ♥️💗💕🍄
Only just started the video so could be wrong, but looks like it’s missing my boy Judah from Bojack Horseman who I personally think was really good representation. There’s even a scene where PC is frustrated over events while Judah keeps jumping through things like they are assignments without fully registering PC is upset, and this happens
PC:Jesus Christ Judah, do you ever read a room?!
Judah:I’m…sorry, is this a bad time?
PC:is midnight on New Years Eve a bad time, I don’t know? Why don’t you run that through your robot analysis protocol and get bad to me once you access the data!
Judah:I am…not a robot; I am a human being
Judah is constantly monotone, has trouble understanding sarcasm or fully getting when someone is upset at him, has extreme interest in music and work to the point he spent the entire day working at one point and questioned when it turned to Night, etc. but that scene hit me because genuinely was trying to help and people with autism can be compared to robots because of how we can act. Thankfully later on PC got back on friendly terms with him
I’d also say Japan in Hetalia, though possibly half the cast there can be coded lol
Thankfully each episode only five minutes so it’s easy to breeze through, but Japan always struck me as coded because of his interests to stuff like minimization and his struggles with social cues to the point of having an arc of living with America and both being introduced to new stuff but also having to deal with an incredibly extroverted person who gives him no personal space and half listens at times
@@theownerofthisaccount2521 I've added these characters to the next list!

I'd add Alastor from Hazbin Hotel,he comes across as a little odd, possibly neurodivergent, plus he's asexual
good choices noah especially the foxes.
@@gasternecross thank you gaster!! Yes, Tails best fox 🦊
Bazinga 🥳

Added to the follow up list then!
Omg, all my avorites characters are autistic coded, what does that mean.
a little confused why you questioned Sherlock Holmes being on the list. I mean THAT Sherlock is not good, but the character of Sherlock is most definitely ND
I was looking for this comment, isn’t Sherlock one of the earliest confirmed autistic characters? Or earliest coded?
The books were written before people knew about autism. Like the late 1800's, I think. But Arthur Conan Doyle could have been someone or known someone who would be considered autistic in present day. I read some of the books and I can see it.
How is Mulan an ND coded character? I'm not upset, just confused. The only ND traits I can see are masking (which is a part of the plot more than character), and that she occasionally finds solutions to obstacles through unconventional methods. To me that last one is just a sign of intelligence more than anything else.
this is just a small rant and a personal thing but the show Chad has some bad autism rep, if it's what the show was going for.
the show just rubs me the wrong way and it just frustrates me so much, i do not like the main character, he just anoys me.
this could be a vibe thing but, bad show, bad rep, rant over. im prepared to get some backlash.
