Always loved the Hellfire song. might have been the first villain song I got attached to, others that come to mind from the time (in no particular order) would be The Oogie Boogie Song (RIP Ken Page), Gaston, and Be Prepared!
This is one of my fav Disney movies and probably one of the most underrated Disney movies ever made! Such detailed and powerful storytelling by emphasizing the characters and their significance to the story. I honestly believe they should make more movies like these because it’s very much realistic on what is happening currently in the world. I agree with you when you said Disney took a huge risk when they made this movie, but that risk paid off incredibly well. As a kid I didn’t quite understand the symbolism and significance of this movie, until I rewatched it in my adult years and it honestly made me appreciate it even more. People like Frollo exist in this world which is the crazy part. Being in authority, using their power and religion to validate what they’re doing as they believe it is righteous... very disturbing but so real.😢💔
My favorite thing I associate with this movie is this article at the barber shop I was reading through as a kid, and they broke down each character in the Disney animated films into categories, such as protag, love interest, goofy sidekick, etc. But there was one box for "Villain's minion", and the only box not filled on the whole chart was next to Follo. And instead of showing a picture of a character, the box simply said "Frollo's too scary"
Hunchback is easily one of Disney's best films. It certainly has a less idealistic view than, say, most of the princess films, but it shows the corruption of humanity, particularly the self-proclaimed virtuous, in such an ingenious way. The world is FULL of people like Frollo who will tear others down to stay on top. It can be soul-crushing and the movie knows this. But it also shows that good people will come along, and they might even be people you had assumptions about yourself. People can surprise you and defy what people like Frollo want you to believe about them.
I couldn't have said it better! Hunchback is such a deep film, and is really a testament to what Disney can do when they put their minds to it. Absolutely a timeless classic imo. Thanks for saying this, Shadow!
0 seconds ago This was a really great analysis of The Hunchback of Notre Dame. It's really a shame that Disney doesn't make more movies like this anymore.
Thanks so much for saying that! I agree, I wish Disney had that same sense of quality they had in the 90s. I'm glad you enjoyed this video! If I see enough support on this one, I'll do more videos like this for other media too
Great Video! I'd love if you made more content like this! One critique I do have is that to my knowledge Romani is more preferable than the word you used. I'm not Romani myself but what I've heard, some Romani people are fine with the G word, some are neutral and some don't like it, it varies from person to person. I'm not trying to be mean or anything, I just care way too much about telling people things, and I thought it might be important info to share.
Thank you very much for saying this! If there's enough attention given to this video, and if it gets at least 100 likes, I'll continue to make more like this. Somebody suggested Owl house for the next topic. And that's good to know actually, thank you! I always want to be mindful about these things 💚
It has been near three whole decades since I last saw this film, and all I can recall about it is how it was advertised to the general public; as your typical safe family friendly and fun Disney film. When you do start to observe the themes and motives going on throughout, you do start to see that this was pushing for so much more than just your typical damsel in distress flick. The themes were deep rooted in the reality of just how insane and cruel the world can be, and simply for everyone's own personal greed and desires; yet does give that take on how there is a small amount of good still there, and despite how small it may seem, it can be so much more everlasting than any selfish motive.
Love this video and this movie! ❤ It's much darker than other Disney movies, but the villain is definitely the most realistic. I also really enjoyed Jason Alexander (George Costanza in Seinfeld!) as the gargoyle Hugo
Frollo not having any likable trait was made o. propose cause they didn't want to continue all the "Cool villains" trope. Also,I suppose, as he is a very grey character in the original story, they wanted to emphasise him as the villain so people ll not simp him with Esmeralda. For example, he could be nice to Quasimodo as he was in the book and the story wouldn't have been affected that much.
I think Frollo didn't see himself as good, but kept trying all the wrong ways to become righteous. Not only blaming Esmeralda, but blaming God. "It's not my fault, if in God's plan, He made the Devil so much stronger than a man" he says. He tries to make Quasimodo feel like a monster because he sees that in himself. And we watch the villain and the hero both deal with imposter syndrome. Frollo is desperate to hide the evil inside him. Quasimodo eventually overcomes the degrading things he's been taught about himself.
Interesting! Dehumanising tho is a very common concept. People convince themselves that the ones that they want to harn ain't actually humans! There are either monsters that need termination or animals whose lives do not really matter and that's ridiculously common even nowadays, even among the most kind people. And that's actually what many states used as propaganda against their enemies or as an excuse to give cruel punishmentt to those viewed as criminals. "Those and ain't humans like us ,they are something inferior or evil and it isn't a sin to punish it " That's how Frollo buries his contiosness saying that gypsies are"vernim ", Esmeralda an evil being, and Quasi a "monster " . Frollo is a very interesting villain cause if this aspect. He isn't sone type of insane of pschycopath. He has regrets ,he knows what's right. But he refuse it willingly....
I love The Hunchback of Notre Dame alongside The Owl House because it has similar themes and the main villain Philip Wittebane aka Emperor Belos is like Judge Claude Frollo from The Hunchback of Notre Dame
@@noahthe0tter I know that characters like Hunter and Gus are autistic. There’s also other characters like Eda Clawthorne who is one of the main characters of the show and she has this curse that transforms her into a monstrous owl beast but later in the show she accepts the owl beast as a part of herself and transforms into a Harpy. The Owl Beast curse is a metaphor for a disability or chronic illness. There’s an episode from season two where Eda and Lilith’s mother Gwen Clawthorne uses bogus cures to get rid of the owl beast curse and I love that episode because it reminded me of articles I read of people using bleach to get rid of autism

About the gargoyles being Quasimodo's imaginary friends...Sorry,but you remember that the gargoyles actively fight along with Quasimodo during the final fight,right...? The attack with the birds, the gatling gun,the cascade of liquid gold...
Great video, but I wanted to let you know that the word you used for Esmeralda’s people is actually a slur. This isn’t common knowledge in the US, but the proper term would Roma or Romani.
