4 Days to Make This Wooden Box? Lots of Details. Dovetails, Veneer, Ebony, Miters. Beginner Friendly

  • I wanted to make my wife a special box for Christmas that was packed with details without going over the top. Can we make the box really interesting while still being subtle and elegant? I gave it my best shot. Can we make it in 4 days? Watch and find out! (Spoiler alert: I fail spectacularly)
    In this video, we tackle milling some really pretty walnut, dovetails, a tiger maple veneer, ebony pulls and inlay, miters, trays, finishing, and throw in a couple of dad jokes along the way. There are some techniques here that are a little more advanced but a new, beginner woodworker will still find plenty of useful information. A nice balance of hand tools and power tools makes the project even more fun.

    While your wife may not notice that grain match and wrap it's a detail that sets this box apart. I've noticed my wife wouldn't call something like that out but if I showed her two boxes, one with a detail like that and one without she'll like the grain matched box. There's something about it that's more pleasing to the eye even if they don't realize all the extra work that went into it. Nice project Kevin!

      Thanks Keaton. My wife loves the box and when she watched the video she appreciated the effort. Us woodworkers should definitely point out the cool stuff instead of just pointing out our mistakes!

    Beautiful box. I sure hoped to see you sign the bottom of it. My wife would never notice the four way grain match, but I would see it every time I looked at the box. Love your videos!

    Kevin, very nice work sir. Just watched a few of your videos. Got a laugh about the tools you said you did not use and what you could have bought with their cost. After 40 years of woodworking I went thru mine and lo and behold, a new truck came into view. Will watch the rest of your videos, thanks again.

    I live in South Texas gets really hot ,yellow or white glue sets up Fast. Hyde glue really works best for complicated glue ups. Chopping dovetails is the most satisfying job in the shop.

    Gorgeous, and the level of craftsmanship is off the charts (as always)... and, silly as it sounds, watching the card tray do the "slow drop" as the air displaces was kinda sexy LOL...

    I love your attention to detail in both your woodworking, which is exceptional, but also your video making, which is concise and thankfully free from smash cuts and flummery. You get to the point, so I learn a lot from your videos with no wasted time. And hello from Minnesota, by the way.

      I think we feel the same way about the videos we like to watch, David! And we’re currently planning our annual trip to Minnesota to visit my wife’s family. Always nice to spend time at the farm and away from the city and traffic of New York.

    • @quillwoodworks
      @quillwoodworks  4 місяці тому

      Thanks, TWC. I’m essentially down to two finishes now. Shellac and the Top Oil. The Top Oil is a little pricey but a little goes a long way. I’ve never tried its direct competitors like Rubio Monocoat. I imagine they’re very similar but I have my technique down with the Osmo product so…if it ain’t broke. Thanks again for watching!

    A beautiful box. Like any piece, most people will see but not notice all the details that make a project like this more beautiful as a result. You fid make it in time for Eastern Orthodox Christmas, btw. Did the gift challenge specify which Christmss was the deadline?

      Thanks for the reply, about 20hrs spread over 5>6 days is a pretty good timeframe for me. I'm nowhere near your skill level, so about 30hrs spread over 8>10 days would be my timeframe and I'd be very happy with that.@@quillwoodworks

    That fourth cut for separating the lid always makes me nervous. I usually make the last two cuts a little less than all the way through. You made it look easy though...

    • @quillwoodworks
      @quillwoodworks  4 місяці тому +1

      I’m a big fan of the spacer that’s inserted after the third cut. Does a nice job of pivoting the lid away from the blade as it is set free. Still stressful though!

    • @tomjudkins3799
      @tomjudkins3799 4 місяці тому

      @@quillwoodworks i assume you are putting pressure against the fence by pushing against the top half of the box above the spacer, but "not to much pressure"

    • @quillwoodworks
      @quillwoodworks  4 місяці тому +1

      I’m sorry, Tom. I forgot to answer this. Yes, the spacer acts as a pivot point. A little pressure against the fence so when the cut is complete the now-released top pivots out of the way of the blade.
