so where can I get pipes if im on a budget? Also I live in Costa Rica… it is kind of difficult to get those here

Magic! And perhaps ultra-nerds might like to know that on his "Celtic Moods" album, Ronan Browne plays a longer version of the Braveheart theme which includes a part played on whistle or flute with orchestra backing. That bit is in a different key but if any piper fancies playing it then it is easily transposed and linked to the main theme with a few extra notes.

To add to the list of fetishized piping, there was a Friends episode with an Uilleann piper.

The opening titles of Boondock Saints was a big one that convinced me to pick up the pipes as a kid.

A good set of film Uilleann Pipes tunes, that I like to do are, Merry Men (Robin Hood Russel Crowe), Braveheart(Outlawed tunes), Lord of the Rings The Shire/Rohirrim theme/Twilight and Shadow, Titanic, Far and Away County Galway. With Lord of the Rings, there is a good amount that can be played on Uilleann Pipes. Also, "All of them" from the one King Arthur movie that had Hans Zimmer as it's composer. Its a really awesome piece of music to play pipes with. If it werent for movies, than I might not have really even got into piping and more specifically the Uillean Pipes.

I believe Mel Gibson specifically requested uilleann's for Braveheart because he liked the sound better - who doesn't! Hehe.😀

There was a brief appearance of a piper in the film The Commitments .. no idea who the piper was but I think he was playing The Colliers Reel

I had a Fromment Concert set with a contrabass regulator attached to the bass regulator.. it was a beast and the only 4 regulator CP set he made. I sold it back in 2008 . It was a few weeks before he passed away.

Very absorbing! You mention the dearth of contrabass regs on recordings. There's a cut of Leo Rowsome playing a Coyne set w/contra on the Drones and Chanter I

Did all those UA-camy things and even shared into some uilleann piping groups

Hello I am Patrick from Liam O'Flynn festival I am looking at pipes from Hakam Din and they seem to sound really nice in the sound sample have you ever come across them? Most pipers say that Cocobolo wood is good for pipes? Not really sure.

Excellent ideas and the difference does show clearly. I'm just returning to whistle playing after many years and was disappointed in a recently purchased Generation whistle. This gives me hope I know part of the charm of the whistle is in it's querks but I find inaccuracies of scale can be irritating. I have a job to do next weekend :)

My favourite were the 18th century ones that wrapped back up in the stock. Amazing!! I guess they stopped that design to allow for more regulators? Is it the design of it that gave them such a deep sound, or the type of reeds/woods that are used??

As an accompanying guitarist this is really interesting insight for me. I will definitely be aware of this in my future listenings. Thanks Jason and cheers from Brittany !

I actually preferred the eeze-drone reeds, which I was not expecting. Great depth to them (at least through a phone speaker). Great video!

The ezeedrone sound was so unusual (they literally made me lean backwards like "whuuhhh???"). In isolation, the others sounded much more pleasing, but it's hard to pass judgement when during an actual spate of playing, who knows what unique interest that sound might lend the chanter. And to your point, sometimes you trade nuances for maintenance, especially when those nuances won't be heard in certain scenarios. Fun video!
