Watch me drone on about Uilleann Pipes drones for 36 minutes
A fairly comprehensive dive into the incredible deep velvet buzz machine of the uilleann pipes. The origins of the pipes, different drone reeds, a bit of a tutorial/lesson, and a comparison at the end. With a bonus clip of a really old set too.

    You are awesome! Thanks so much for putting out all of this wonderful information for us newbies! I am getting my first set at the end of the month and I am over the moon! I am coming from a GHB bagpipe background and marvelling at how vastly different it all is LOL. We normally tune our drones to the same note on our chanter (the “A” note on GHB)…. Lots to learn for me LOL. Thanks so much! I love your channel!

    The ezeedrone sound was so unusual (they literally made me lean backwards like "whuuhhh???"). In isolation, the others sounded much more pleasing, but it's hard to pass judgement when during an actual spate of playing, who knows what unique interest that sound might lend the chanter. And to your point, sometimes you trade nuances for maintenance, especially when those nuances won't be heard in certain scenarios. Fun video!

    Sorry man but each reed is very specific to its chanter. The inner diameter of the Reed itself is critical in tuning. The pakistani chanters main problem is they are fitted with generic bagpipe plastic reeds which sound like shit in any chanter.if the correct diameter of the reed staple is found then the reed will work ok.Reed adjustment is done in eyelash widths which can make a huge difference.

    Uhhh, wow, that's actually the Cummings chanter??! Wow... WOW. You've got so many amazing sets! Yeah, truly double trouble. Heck, two pipers might never agree on a setting of any tune, including when it's just one piper playing a double-chanter 😆 Such an other-worldly sound.

    Great video! Top It Off is such a fantastic tune. But everything I've seen equates the terms Hop Jig and Slip Jig as synonymous (so, a Hop Jig is still 9/8). I ~think~ Tommy Reck puts in an extra beat when he bounces down to the low D, making it go from 9/8 to 12/8 in bars 4 and 8? Regarding the note between D and E, I WISH it was called "ghost E" (I think that's what you're saying? My ears could be fooling me), but alas Ennis himself explains it as Ghost D in his written tutor :-/

    • @sionrouse
      @sionrouse Місяць тому

      Like a lot of things in uilleann piping there’s no 100% correct terminology. I think I call it Ghost E. Maybe Ghost D is more correct! Also you are right about the Reck version, the extra bounce is such a great jam. Incidentally another name for Top it Off is ‘Rouse it’ 😅

      They share a few things, like being bellows blown but the uilleann pipes are their own beast really. They’re the most evolved of the bagpipe family with all the extra innovations and notes. Pretty complicated but you can start on a basic practice set and add bits as you go!

    Fantastic video, Jason. Loved your dramatic intro! 😂 It was very interesting to hear the closed and open demonstrated. You naming the different pipers for each style helped a lot in hearing the difference cuz I listen to a lot. Personally, still too new at it to go one way or the other in my own playing, but quit sure my teacher Eliot plays more closed. And since you mentioned Robbie Hannan as a closed player, I know Eliot learned from him and considers him the best. So not much doubt about it. He also teaches closed style, I think, because even as a beginner, he has me doing lots of cuts and very rhythmic punctuation. Although my playing is still far from rhythmic. But 🤔, I think I like the open style better. 😳 Again, great video. Sorry writing a book here, but guess I had a lot to say. Thanks! ❤️

    Using both according to the situation is definitely the way to go. The argument made by another comment is spot on on how ensemble-playing requires for a more open piping, but I'd say that even as a soloist, if you played ONLY closed, it gets tiresome real quick. Going back and forth between both stiles to emphasize musical moments is the best that you can do. Is the same approach that most instruments have because usually they are able to do allkinds of different dynamics and articulations. Most of world pipes do not have most of those qualities, and if your pipe (uilleann) has at least a couple of this resources, USE THEM. Thanks for these videos Jason.

    In my first like 6 months to a year of playing the pipes I played the chanter like a whistle, totally open. When I started to want to do triplets I realized I needed to learn closed. Even then for a while though I played open until I wanted to stop the chanter for some reason. At some point as my ear developed I realized playing open affected tonality. I especially realized I didn’t like how F# sounds if you don’t if you don’t cover your pinky and ring finger holes. So since then I’ve been struggling to force myself to play closed most of the time and just use open style for effect. It’s easier when I learn new tunes but it’s difficult to overcome muscle memory on tunes I’ve played open for so long

    Nice analysis here! I find that I can't always tell the difference between the two. At some point, a "legato piper" can have so many tight triplets that they outshine the rest of the notes he plays. And if we consider O'Flynn a staccato piper, let's not forget how open his playing was on Planxty 2 compared to other albums. I always thought that treating the pipes as a music instrument and not just "advanced bagpipes" (no offense to any kind of bagpipes or pipers), it's a good idea to use all the colors we can get from them. Combining open and closed styles opens greater possibilities in phrasing, rhythm, and dynamics. I still enjoy any kind of skilled piping ofcourse!

    This is the house I was born in and lived there for about seventy-five years or so. It's called Downings House -- not Dowling's, a very common mistake. The boys are playing in the old dairy room where I used to churn butter as a lad. Planxty actually played next door in the old kitchen where we had a fire going burning furniture. Great to see the old house still alive and well and to hear the music still being played. Well done lads!! And thanks Ger Masterson, the present Lord of the Manor for allowing this to happen.

    Hi, Jason. Can you make a video on closed vs open piping? This seems to be a thing but I can't find a lot of info about it. Thanks!

      This is actually on my list of things to do! Thanks so much and great to know it’s something people want to understand more. I think it’s such an interesting part of the instrument and happy to talk about it in a new video 🙌🏻

      @@sionrouse Thanks so much. I'm getting back to piping now after 15 years and during all this time this is something I always tried to observe in different pipers but I've never seen anyone actually talk about it, or demonstrate it. Your channel is a gold mine for us self taught pipers out there so thank you very very much the effort you put into it.

    Wow, nice trick, gonna try this one for sure! BTW, is that a sindt? Mine has that thing, the pressure for high a and b is significantly higher than for the rest of the 2nd register, wander if all of them are like that
