They probably didn't sample every note, but recorded a few notes, and as you said, digitally raised them to do the other notes. I bought an orchestral SoundFont many years ago, and it had many levels of samples. Not only were the notes sampled at regular intervals, but they had soft/hard/loud/quiet/pizzicato, and other types of performance dynamics. It was much more authentic sounding than this one.
It does come off like that on the non standard notes. And the rubbed back D is 100% a highland technique that has been co-opted by the uilleann community, Tomas O’Cannainn credits Paddy Keenan with this in his book. It’s a technique that I got beat out of me at a young age 😅
Although I'm not a highland piper I do occasionally rub the back D, I also blame Paddy Keenan for that after hearing him do it on his first LP 😜 @@sionrouse
Aye can't really complain as it was free and I had a lot of fun with playing around. Not sure I'd use it myself but I can see people getting some mileage out of it
I generally like the Labs series, but I think this one is pretty poor. To get any sort of decent performance with it requires multitracking, and as you noted the chanter tends to sound like an 8 bit video game. The Efimov vst is far, far better IMO, but then it's not free. In this case, I don't think free is worth it.
Thank you, after hearing it…there’s nothing like the real thing. What happened to your shoulder? So many of us have shoulder issues. Often not pipe related.
Ah its a long story with the shoulder but I'm happy to be on the mend now. Don't want to rush back into piping in case it doesn't heal properly. Need to keep an eye on it! And aye, hard to beat the pipes. Such a tricky instrument to properly emulate.
If you can still play cylindrical instruments, like a low whistle, you could just purchase a good synthetic reed and mouth blow the pipe chanter apart from the bellows and bag. I've gotten good at it, and I can hit the second octave successfully. Although, I have an adapter piece that hooks to the pipe chanter with a small tubing hole. ua-cam.com/video/dLWl5Nji9C8/v-deo.html
@@sionrouse thanks... what about a spare one? I have one that is made from rosewood and that wood is good against moisture and not corroding. Maybe a chanter that is made from synthetic materials? I get it though. It is something that has kind of been alien to the world of Irish bagpiping. But it does work. And synthetic reeds aren't hard to mouth blow. Here's a funny thing. Maybe hook up an air compressor? Now with that I am not being serious.
@@dominiclapinta8537 haha! It’s probably been done. I imagine something like that for breaking in reeds would be good, especially for balancing drone reeds. Who knows!
@@sionrouse this was years ago, but when I first was getting into bagpiping, I had a mouth blown set and I was curious and hooked up a small foot pump to em, and they played.
Hi, seen this VST and it got me thinking about the real ones, knew they were dear but near fainted when seen full sets at £7k!!!!! Watched your video on the cheap Pakistan sets on ebay. £200 for half set. Do you think these could be worked on, if you're a bit handy, to be playable to learn on. PS Try Reaper DAW. Also apparently the Ilya Efimov makes a great pipes VST.
I wouldn't advise on buying one of the cheap Pakistan sets as they're fundamentally flawed and will probably put you off the instrument. You can still get good quality pipes on the second hand market or through some good makers with budget sets. I saw a Joe Kennedy budget chanter that was very reasonably priced, and a few other makers do something similar like Andreas Rogge. I made a video on tips for buying here you might find useful ua-cam.com/video/Y0Uz0Uzb480/v-deo.html

Wow yeah that sounds good! Maybe I’ll try and do my own uilleann pipes sample down the line some time, make it authentic and super niche
Crans sound like they were played by a highland piper

12:45... I have a description for that sound.... "Bray Fart" 🤣
Ha!!
Good fun. That is about all I think though, thanks for posting!

Aye I get why they've done it like this, but splitting the tracks makes it a real pain to work with

Agh Ouch
Interesting but for the brother below 12:45 it sounds like a fart
Yes, Prof. Darcy has mentioned that too. Is this some kind of Chat GPT comment?

Aye I probably wouldn't want to put moisture through a chanter, even with a plastic reed. Doesn't sound too bad on the video there though, good work!

Reverb drenched 😂. Anything reverb drenched is 🤢. I enjoyed the exploration, but none of it sounded like pipes.
