    A few years ago, I bought a synthetic ABS practice set made in the UK. I paid $465 shipping included. Tried them out once and tossed them into storage. LOL 😂 Wish I had someone like yourself to teach me. 😁 Thanks for your honest review and demonstration. Very helpful, indeed. Greetings from San Francisco, California, USA.

      I've tried a few of those and they really struggle to compare with a proper set. I wouldn't mind but they are seriously over priced for what you can do with them. In the UK they're often found in music shops and sold to aspiring pipers. Maybe I'll do a video on one of the ABS sets if I can get my hands on one for cheap.

    Well done Jason! No doubt your video will prove to be of great help to the uilleann piping fraternity.
    I hope you can get an occasional supply of cane for reed making, as my father made reeds as fast as lightening; He told me that it was really important to obtain the cane at a particular stage of "ripeness" which made it easy to work with using his cut-threat razor -

    I think if you can drill out the top to accept the read of choice & then use a small carving knife to open the holes, particularly the back hole to tune the chanter, then it might be useable, otherwise it can be a 'wall hanging' like my Pakistani made bagpipes. ;)

You were saying about maybe making a video with recommendations for affordable alternatives for beginners and how to buy a good set for cheap, which would be great for folks like me with an interest in starting but finding it hard to know where to start. A lot of the makers I’ve come across are super expensive. I understand why as they’re very difficult and time consuming to make, I guess just an easier introduction for folks like me maybe would be great!

    I don't even play the pipes (yet) and I know that sounded so wrong. Most newbies like myself know the Pakistani sets are bad, but you really thoroughly outlined why exactly they are so bad. It's not even the reeds, it's the foundational design of the chanter. I can understand why they sent plastic reeds, because some beginners use them I guess, but a HIghland reed? The people who packed that for you clearly don't know one reed from another. Surprised you didn't get a saxaphone reed. There's another video on youtube where a man buys a set of Highland pipes from Pakistan. After much patient work, taping, more taping, and struggling with the bag and chanter, he literally throws it down on the floor.

    Thanks Jason for this in-depth video! Would buying a set of these just for the bag/bellows combo and then purchasing a quality chanter for it be a sensible option for a budget starter practice set, do you think? Thanks

    • @sionrouse
      @sionrouse  Рік тому +1

      Hmm, that probably seems like a good idea but my experience with the bag/bellows is different with every set. Some are passable quality and some are dreadful. The bags seem to be the worst offenders, with the bellows typically a bit more serviceable. If youre on a budget then I would 100% put your money into a good chanter and then build up the rest of the set when you can afford it. Thanks :)

      I do not recommend! I replaced the leaky bellows with a lovely Dow bellows sold to me kindly by someone not Learning pipes anymore. The bag holds air just fine (it's just fugly). The chanter was tuned as best as possible by Jack Brennan and the reed by Glen Sheffer. It's still super ordinary but I can't afford a new chanter right now. It allows me to learn and I bought the set before having any lessons at all.

Played GHB for about 10 years in the States and now looking to migrate my knowledge to Uilleann after a great session at An Droichead a few weeks ago! I'm keen to get the fingerings down first and was wondering if there's a 'practice chanter' setup for Uilleann like there is for GHB or am I better to just get an entry-level set of pipes and learn that way? Appreciate any recommendations!

    Question: I am kind of new (5years) to the uilleann pipes. I played Highland pipes before for many years. How long should an uilleann chanter reed last? I currently own a David Daye set. I play maybe 5 hours total a week. After about 2 years, my reed just flattens or collapses I guess would be a better description. So I have to get a new one every 2-3 years. Is this normal?

    • @sionrouse
      @sionrouse  Рік тому +1

      If you don't need to mess around too much with a reed and live in a relatively stable climate it should last for a long time. I had a reed that was 100 years old and still played well, but that was certainly an outlier and not the norm. I imagine most reeds would last around a decade or so before going for a new one. But your mileage may vary-things like blowing into the reed by mouth will shorten the lifespan.

    • @sionrouse
      @sionrouse  2 роки тому

      Thank, I think I’ll have to do a video on buying a set. There’s a few makers that are reasonably priced out there but ordering a new set could be a long wait. David Daye makes a ‘penny chanter’ which I’ve not tried but looks like it gets good results. Andreas Rogge makes delrin (plastic) starter chanters which is a great option. Martin Gallen, Sam Lawrence and Kenneth McNicholl all make reasonably priced practice sets. You could always see if you spot a second hand set by a good maker on the Uilleann pipes Facebook group, provided there’s a decent reed and no issues with the set. Get in touch with Na Piobairi Uilleann (pipers.ie) as they do a pipes on loan scheme if you don’t want to fork out the full price right now. Hope this helps!

    @Vivianndenyss 2 роки тому

    Hi ! Thanks for the video. I recently bought the same chanter, just for fun. I have more or less the same results as you. I think the back D is flat here mainly because the wall is way too thick (the external diameter goes larger at this place) as well as a bit small...

    • @sionrouse
      @sionrouse  2 роки тому

      Aye I think there are certainly some problems with the top part of the chanter. Maybe the reamer didn’t go in far enough? Without taking measurements it’ll be hard to say but that’s certainly what it feels like. But I know what you mean, it feels like a lot of wood between the hole and the bore

    Were you able to use the bag/bellows/stocks for a practice set or were they all problematic?

    • @sionrouse
      @sionrouse  2 роки тому

      I only got the stocks with this one, but I can confirm the bags and bellows both pretty poor. You should throw out the bags but the bellows can be useful with a new valve, provided they’re airtight. They’re not my style at all but they can be functional to a degree. Again, I’d put money into a proper bellows. For a practice set, every part of the pipes is important to get right, so any small issue can be magnified many times over for the beginner. The stocks seem to be okay here, but a new valve was also required to make them airtight and playable. Check my video on Uilleann tips & tricks for some more info on getting a good seal and my thoughts on bellows too if you’re interested

    • @sionrouse
      @sionrouse  2 роки тому +1

      @@justaguy5776 you’d want a proper bag to be honest. The bags they come with are fairly dire, even with a strong bit of seasoning. I’ve seen folks use the bellows but you’d want to have a go at a new valve for them. There’s a little bit about valves in my last video about Uilleann tips & tricks which might be of help. • @sionrouse
      @sionrouse  5 місяців тому +1

      I don’t think the geographic location of the maker has an impact. I would go as far as to say that the best modern maker of uilleann pipes is Japanese. I’m not sure the chanter in this video is trying to reinvent the instrument as a band new thing, rather it’s trying to emulate existing makers. We can see this as this particular chanter is a copy of the work of Robbie Hughes, a well established pipe maker from Co. Down.
      I get the point you’re making with different instruments from different cultures but I’m not sure it applies to this. Perhaps if it was positioned as a new instrument and not an uilleann pipe then I’d understand your boggle. I’m glad you enjoyed the sound of it though.

      What you say, LITERALLY, is that a Taiko = a snare drum, sir.
      Now, as it factually is:
      Every country, which has it's own version of a certain instrument, affects said instrument, through it's culture.
      What you say, sir, is:
      Mongolian Tuvan Throat Singing = Tibetan Gyoto Monk Kargyraa Throat Singing.
      Since, Throat Singing.
      I then say:
      Absolutely not.
      And YES, it is this, it is an EXACT, FACTUAL analogy.
      A Spanish guitar is not comparable to an American guitar.
      Simple.
      Factual.
      My apologies for correcting you, sir.
      But facts are simply that.
