outdoors with sum back with another tier list!
moa are known for being New Zealand's extinct, iconic, giant birds - but only true fans know that 9 distinct species existed. extinct? yes. iconic? of course. giant? think again! for some, size made them powerful - for others it was sneakiness. the only way to know for sure which was the most powerful? a tier list of course
01:21 - explaining the tiers
03:33 - little bush moa
04:31 - heavy-footed moa
05:13 - stout-legged moa
06:28 - South Island giant moa
07:21 - Mantell's moa
08:08 - eastern moa
08:57 - upland moa

    Im in America and im currently going into my second year of college. I’m a biology student at the moment but I don’t have the means to go into a masters degree and I want financial stability so I can travel but I can’t imagine a life with no animal work. Is it going to be possible to be a wildlife rehabber if I change my major?

    • @shortcake.b
      @shortcake.b 4 місяці тому

      hi! i'm actually attempting to go down the same path, and from the opportunities near me i would say that it's possible! some of the listings i've seen have multiple majors listed in their descriptions including biology (: i would say to make sure you have a better chance though just in case, to try and get as many volunteer positions as possible so you can get that hands on animal experience, or research experience as well!

    • @outdoorswithsum
      @outdoorswithsum Місяць тому

      hello! I would say if you want to go down the route of becoming an academic masters is definitely needed, but otherwise focus on bachelors first and work experience/volunteering where you can. Wildlife rehabbing will be low pay but very fulfilling so just be prepared for that!

    Hey... Do you still read comments? What do you think about a focus on ecology instead of zoology?

    • @outdoorswithsum
      @outdoorswithsum Місяць тому

      hello I am catching up on them now eek! I actually think ecology leads to more job oppurtunities because it is a broader field of study - you can go into plants, land management, conservation, zoology.. rather than just animals. If you aren't sure exactly what your goal is, start with ecol :)

    Our band (Katchafire) was made honorary ambassadors of the Archey's frog back in 2008-2009 by senior members of the captive program at the Auckland zoo where we also held a free concert and raised money for the tiny lil' guys. We were told by the zoo keeper it was the quietest and most well behaved the zoo animals have ever been when we had our concert there, our music must have chilled them all out lol. Growing up as a kid, our house was by a pond and green frogs were common and always hopping around, my friends and I would catch them and race them. I kept one as a pet. Cool video, thanks for sharing.

    They live in pairs, and will find you, not vice-versa for joe bloggs. Common where predators are less, and habitat suitable. Low scrub and rushes type, wetland is incidental. If tweeting at you there will be 2 of them looking at you, but it takes awhile to pick them out. When logging native forest, they invaded the cut-over cleared/part cleared areas as soon as rushes established, well into the high forest. Ironic when F&B were advertising to their followers logging threatened them, but much of the propaganda had (& has) factual flaws. Logging did displace some other species though, & has been interesting what has happened & thrived in the subsequent 40 years incidentally. Now kiwi & kea favour that regenerating forest.

    Call me an idealist, but I think many of these documentaries in general are way too focused on the whole "nature is cruel" thing. Sure, animals in captive situations like in labs to study depression and stuff are under chronic stress, and in poorly run zoos, but in nature there's tons of animals just doing their thing and living fairly peaceful lives. They're not *constantly* living in fear of predators like in inhumane captive settings. Why not make it more like bonobos where stress isn't a big deal? How about focusing more on symbiosis as opposed to predation? Why not a planet where symbiosis and altruism is the main driving force to keep a species alive? i could go into so much detail, but i don't want to take up 5 pages with explaining this...
