filming enchanting estuary birds in New Zealand | WAIKANAE ESTUARY SCIENTIFIC RESERVE VLOG

- A birding expedition to film as many birds as possible at the Waikanae Scientific Reserve in New Zealand! I had 2 hours and came out with a respectable 20 species - including banded and New Zealand dotterels, grey teal, and sacred kingfisher.
The Waikanae estuary is rich in biodiversity, thanks to it being so close to the Kāpiti Island marine reserve. Its a safe haven for native fish and invertebrates, which support all of the wonderful manu (birds) that live there, and provides a safe passage inland for breeding. To keep it that way, its been extensively replanted by volunteer groups putting in the mahi. I loved my morning here and highly recommend it to anyone wanting to have a peaceful time in nature! Remember to keep your dogs on leashes, as endangered birds breed there.

Aroha nui!

Really enjoy hearing all the different Maori names for the birds.
Also, excellent camerawork!
Ah I’m so glad you enjoyed that ☺️ I’m making an effort to learn them all!
I was just going to say this! It sheds some light to help understand the island & its culture. :)
Really nice work with this video, it is definitely some of the best produced birding content I've seen on UA-cam. The visuals were crisp, and I loved the choice of soundtrack and overall vibes from this piece. Subscribed and am excited for more!
Wow thank you so much!! That’s awesome feedback I really appreciate it 💛 I’m glad you enjoyed and yay welcome to the family!
My kind of birding, always fun to head out to an open wetland to find some water and shorebirds. Great footage Summer

Wetlands are just such a hotspot! I wish we had more 😭
Fantastic work Summer! This video was so much fun, I learned a ton as I always do and I was blown away by the cinematography! You got some incredible shots, seeing two shag species and a black swan in the same clip was amazing! I hope you do a lot more of these!

omg best compliment ✨
Great video as always! Interesting to see my familiar Australian birds that have flown over in relativity recent years.
Yes our waxeyes and swallows are recent arrivals from over the ditch I think! Thanks for watching 🧡
lovely video!
I like your easy going vlogging style. Loved all the birds you found. I'm in Florida and we have all other set of birds but I see some bird species. Great birding channel, I enjoyed watching, thanks. 🙂👍
Aw thank you for watching 😁 I’m glad you enjoyed it, I bet you have amazing birds over there?!
@@outdoorswithsum yes, Florida is birders paradise 👍🙂
I'm always super excited to see a new Outdoorswithsum vid in the feed! That looked like a super fun and relaxing time and so was the video. Those banded dodderels were so cute!
BTW I mentioned on your last vid I was coming to far north qld, and now I'm commenting from there! I've just spent the past 2 weeks in the bush collecting wildlife cams with a researcher studying northern quolls, it's been such a cool experience
Awww thank you so much! Im glad I could channel the serenity I felt here into the video for you 💛 just looked up quolls and they are SO COOL I had no idea they existed! They look like a nicer version of a tazzy devil hehe. I hope it’s all going well, sounds like so much fun!
I'm hopefully heading to NZ in September!! (covid pending of course!!). I will have to pick your brain for some good birding spots!! Great video mate =)
Omg yes!! Would love to help out with some spots! And if you come to Wellington let me know ☺️☺️
love it!! my fave was the oystercatcher :)
Nice one , a great days birding .... I've been trying to film kingfishers lately but they don't like letting me get very close 😃
They are so tricky aren’t they!! Surprised that ones stuck around for as long as it did!
if you're ever up in hamilton, i know a great spot where this 100% chance of seeing dabchicks 👍
We had a pair of weiweia show up at our local pond, still wondering why they were there? Specially since there is no privacy
Did you see both the red chested and banded dotterels today? So hard to distinguish.
whaaaat! adding a red chested dotterel to my wanted birds list
Here from reddit :) beautiful area. I wonder why it's called a scientific reserve.
Yay hello!! Great question, I’m guessing it might be because there’s quite a few rare and protected plant species there!
@@outdoorswithsum thanks, that does make sense!
It is here since 1987 to especially protect a rare specie of wetland plant
@@DirPFNZ would love to know what species?
