I love how much respect New Zealand shows with emphasis on Maori names for birds. Is this a recent phenomenon? How do people feel about it? Among others, I voted for the Ruru and Pukeko because their Maori names are SO much better than their English names (Morepork and Australasian Swamphen, respectively). Also, excellent points in favor of the Titiponamu. Had I not already voted, I would have been swayed to include it.
Me too 😊😊 it’s something I make a conscious effort to include and Forest and Bird have done a wonderful job of having all the Māori names for the manu before the English names on the voting site! It’s definitely not something everyone does - I learnt them when I started a job that puts Te Ao Māori up high in their values, but growing up in a small town I was not taught them until about 2 years ago. The amount of use they’re getting is improving I think, but slowly, and there’s still resistance especially when it comes to New Zealand place names. But I have hope, they hold so much cool information about the birds like how their call sounds or aspects of their personality! Eg hihi means ray of sunshine for the yellow feathers on their shoulders 😊💛
Ruru is an excellent choice btw I rank them top tier. Pūkeko always seems to do well - very interesting to me! Would love to know your reasons for voting for them 🙂
@@outdoorswithsum I see. So the Maori name use would be overrepresented in the wildlife educators that are my only connection to New Zealand, because they are using language that is respectful and cool, but not everyone is using it yet. That makes sense. Still nice to hear, and I really wish we could emulate this trend in other parts of the world. Pukeko hold their food in their foot like a parrot. But they're not parrots, they're rails. Having spent a lot of time around parrots I thought it was delightful. Then the older siblings take care of the younger siblings, showing them how to hold their food. They're a better sibling than me. Add a dashing look and great name, and you've got a bird worth voting for. Well, *I* have a bird worth voting for. Everyone is welcome to appreciate the birds they appreciate.
Titipounamu are absolutely adorable, I hope they win this year! I didn’t know too much about them before this video, but you did such a good job of showing us what makes them so cool that I really like them now. Great work Summer! - Harrison and Evan
You are good at this, kept my attention all the way through. I have never actually seen a rifleman in real life. I liked it that you kept repeating titipounamu, as I now remember this as the Maori name for them.
Aww thanks for such good feedback! 😊😊😊 glad to hear I have done my job. Pounamu translates to greenstone for the green feathers, and ti refers to the high pitched call they make 💚 such a cool name!
And the bat won... New Zealand Wrens are my some of my passerine favs. There is always next year, unless they decide to put a native dragonfly or butterfly in.
The Rifleman is one of only two surviving New Zealand wrens, which gives it a unique taxonomic status. I did not vote for this bird, but at least I didn’t vote for the bat.
Just as the pekapeka is one of only two New Zealand bats. It's important to remember that BOTY's purpose is to raise awareness for our endangered wildlife, and the pekapeka is struggling too. That's why they're my BOTY. There's no contests for our bats and that's why I've got their back.
Great video, your a natural in front of the camera. I was so pleased you were voting for the Titipounamu, such a beautiful little bird. I managed to film a pair nesting a few years ago at Pūkaha National Wildlife Centre at Mount Bruce while staying with friends in Palmerston North. I just set the camcorder up and left it running and moved away so not to disturb them. Keep up the sterling work. David
Quality video sum love your passion for these little manu
Cheers mate! Hope you exercised your democratic rights
You're telling me a bird that size can hold a rifle?? How could you not vote for something with that much upper core strength?
Adding this to the list of what makes a good bird
Love this! Was already gonna vote Titipounamu, as they're one of my top faves. Will definitely share this video 😊 💚
Nice and beautiful video. Thanks for sharing.
I'm sold. These birds are too cute.
