This was what all the hard work as been for. The first flight taking my dad up. It was a bit windy today and make for some tricky landings. The last landing at L36 has been the hardest landing I have ever had to make, but hey I did it, on the second try haha.

Pulling the 582 off and getting ready for the new motor to come in. Lots of work coming for the little Avid Flyer. Let me know if you know of any PM I should be doing while off that I did not think about. Thanks.

Flying to the spooky old Sutter Buttes Missile Silo in the Avid Flyer,
do you have a diagram of how you built the ADSB receiver in ? where do you view on skydemon?
I used a raspberry pi board and found the ADSB program, here is a link to someone who did it, github.com/openskynetwork/raspberry-pi-adsb. Here is another link, www.adsbexchange.com/ways-to-join-the-exchange/build-your-own/. You use to get the parts on amazon, but I do not see them all there. I was able to build it for a quarter of a Stratus. I use my foreflight to view the data that came in.
Hoped you could point out what was what but nice aerial views and touching the ground a couple of times.
Great build! Two things, If you run a small bleed tube from the high side of your cooling system down to the bleed port you put in. it will self-bleed and keep the pump primed. I didn't see one but do you have a coolant tank? also, the safety wire on your prop is incorrect on one of the bolts.
Your shop - is the floor gravel & covered with carpet? How's that been working for you?
I am looking at a Avid with a 582 was wondering if you were running the 582? the guy im buying from is the second owner and cant tell me clime rate or stoll rate and has never flown it. since its 3 years out of annual im worried it wont have the power I would like.
Fantastic. I have an Avid C with 582. How do the motor mounts fit? Is it fitted for flight. Dual ignition system?
Yes the 670 and 582 are same lower case so it was direct built up to my existing mount. Yes the head comes with dual ignition system.
congrads, where did you get thre engine? Iam thinking of the same for my project, a dan reynolds special a chinook 2 . thanks, Dave
From Rotax Rick out of Florida. rotaxrick.wordpress.com/
Just bought an Avid and I’m already looking at options to upgrade the power. I think the 670 might be the way to go. What are your thoughts 2 years into this?
I’m buying this airplane next Saturday. What kind of amazed to find the videos, I love them. Beautiful airplane great job
Congratz, I was looking at it as well. Looks like an amazing plane.
Did you end up getting it? Ads still up on Barnstormers.
I also have an Avid Flyer mark IV tail dragger with a 670 Rotax which I acquired used several years ago. After working out all the problems in the airframe, engine and fuel system it is ready to fly, but I cannot get it to make a straight takeoff run down the runway centerline. It most always wants to make a sudden radical left turn when full power is applied causing my take off to be aborted. What sequence of events do you use when you are taking off? You never seem to wander from the center of the runway. Please advise with your technique.
You may want to check the alinement of the gear. A darting to the left might be due to that or even a sticking brake pad. If I recall the rotax blade spins in the opposite direction from a Lycoming or continental. These engines will cause the plane to pull left due to the torque, also coming up on the mains will make you go left due to gyro effect. I do not think this applies to the Rotax. If its just engine force pulling you left and not misaligned gear or sticking brake. Try applying right rudder and pushing power in slow. Also recommend getting a CFI who know tailwheel and Rotax to fly it.
What shelter is that?
It is a Winkler System. Thanks
I spent many days at Lake Berryessa, boating, rope swings and fishing too, what a huge part of my youth it was. Strange as it may seem, I missed the lake most when I was serving overseas, now I have an Air Command gyrocopter and will be flying out of Watts (Woodland), you should check out the Guinda Canyon for low and slow flight, Great vid, stay safe.
I am happy to hear this brought back some good memories. Where is this Guinda Canyon located?
just curious as to why you would mount it upside down? i have a kitfox model 2 that i got a rotax rick 670 for. i mounted it facing it up. is there any benefit to puttingit upside down?
The kitfox came after the Avid Flyer, built before the company split. They wanted the avid to look more like a Cessna, so in order to do that they mount the engine upside down to fit in the cowling. Unlike Kitfox, later on, who kept it upright which they used the radial looking cowling.
awsome you got to take your father up!! Beautiful job with all the improvements you made to the Avid
My 670 on my Avid Mk IV is nearly a drop in from the 582, same mount. The weight difference is very small. Typically about 15 lbs total for the engine, exhaust, extra prop blade and electric fuel pump
That's bad ass, now i want one ! What's the stall speed for it? And do you know where i can get building plans ?
They are a blast man. Stall speed is around 35-42mph. Plans might be hard to come by you can look on Barnstormers for kits not finished, avidfoxflyers.com/. These would be your best bets. good luck.
@dcavidflyer3073 thanks I'm going to look there to. I looked at the files on the world wide avid flyers on Facebook. And they had some plans for Avids and the knock off the Raven. Buying one would be probably be my best bet but building one would be fun.
What model hanger is that? Did you build? Buy or rent?
The hangar is a Winkler system out of Canada. I bought it. They have many different designs to fit your needs.
Did you sell this gear now that you've upgraded to the shock monster?
Hey I'm gonna put a 670 in my avid I was wondering did you use the exhost from the 582 and wondering about the head that accommodates 4 spark plugs where do I find one of those ?
Hey, the 670 was a big hop up in power. You will need a new exhaust for it. I had it made, here is the email, cpiracing1@gmail.com. He will need pics of your set up for proper placement of the pipe. The head came with my 670. I traded in my 582 to Rotax Rick out of Florida who build mine. You should reach out to him to see if you can get one from him. I hope this helps. thanks.
can we put a 912 100 hp in this? this is a real question. 😅
Yes you can, just need to add weight to the back to keep the CG in place. Also limits useful load.
Why install a 912? The 670 has 92 HP and very small weight increase. The 670 from Rick is 1/3 the cost of a 912, also.
Love the avid where you from
What wing do you have? TIA
this is the heavy hauler wing.
i am trying to get on,
Congrats on marriage and child
Nice looking C170! I enjoy your videos. FYI, it’s Gravelly Valley not Gar-Valley.
haha yes that is the one. Thanks, its a real nice plane. You still in the area?
David, @@dcavidflyer3073 what motor in your 170? And congrats ! I see your old Avid is on Barnstormers
Our 170 has the O-300 in it. Nothing special but does the job. Also thank you. @@johnstevens1680
Nice upgrade. Now to pay a mechanic.
Luckily a good buddy of mine is one. Owner assisted here I come haha.
Holy performance Batman!
the 4 stroke unit is same thing as 2 stroke then except for the extra aux units?
To my knowledge yes, the EIS 2002 and 2004 are the same but the extra port. I think the EIS 4000 has 4 cylinder over the 2 the 2004 has.
@@dcavidflyer3073 my cheap swift egt is off by 100 degrees on one side, took a while to figure out, maybe I shoulda got one of these GRT things.
Hey, what are you using as a hangar? Would like to put something like that up. Cowling looks great. Always liked the Lines on the Avid better than the Kitfox 1-4. Something about putting radial blisters on a non radial, wasn’t quite right. Kinda like turning a Fiero into a Ferrari.
Haha I love that analogy, I agree with you on that. The Hangar is a Winkler System. They are based out of Canada. I really like the system. Only thing I am not a fan of is the door. It works but not the best of seal. Also I use a harbor fright cheap truck winch to open and close the door, ran off a deep cycle battery, over the hand crank it comes with. winklerstructures.com/news/structures/fabric-hangars-winkler-structures/
Dang, that is impressive.
No videos lately, are you still working on it? I talked to Rotax Rick today about my 618. I’m sending it to him and was looking forward to see how your 670 is doing. Are you happy with the build?
hey I built the plane up flew it and sold it. I really did like the 670 performance. You will see a big jump in STOL activities. I did not set my prop up for cruse but to get off the ground quick, so I can not contest to the cruse. From what I know you would see some gain in cruse speed, but this plane and wing/gear/tires had so much drag. I sold it because I wanted a plane with more room, so I purchased a 170B. I really do love the plane and 670 for fun get out and spend a few hours flying.
@@dcavidflyer3073 Damn! I’d love to have a 170B that’s a nice 4 place tail dragger! My buddy’s dad has one sitting in an old broken down hangar and it hadn’t been flown in probably 40 years. It’s a shame! Enjoy that 170. Hopefully you do some videos with it
You can remove the air in cooling systems with a vacuum filling device. It's used in automotive repair because newer cars have air pockets in the system. The tool works like an air conditioner vacuum pump it pulls a vacuum then you throw a valve the fluid goes in replacing the vacuum it will fill entire system without any air pockets.
Awesome! Hey curious what we’re you seeing for cruise speed with cowling off?
Tony, I did not actually take it up and fly without the cowling. With cowling I was seeing about 85mph. This is with climb pitch, stol wing and draggy tires.
@@dcavidflyer3073 right on, thanks. Stoked to see that bad boy running good!
Hello sir. You have been quiet on you tube. I am just reaching out to verify you are ok.
Paul you are to kind. I am well and hope you are too. I sold off the Avid and now flying a 170B. Maybe I should start posting about flying that?
Great video ! I’m shopping for EIM for my streched PA-20 and would like to know if you are satisfied with GRT and also what interface and displays you’re using (if any ) . Thanks !!!
Thank you. I liked the GRT system. I was having the info being displayed on the Sport EFIS from GRT. The only issue I had was my sending units were jumpy, like the readings bounced around. Talked with another builder, and he told me to ground all the senders direct to the display with a ground lead from there to the main bus. Worked perfect. I have some other videos showing the system.
Super nice Avid! I'm building a C model now and like your mods.
I don't remember the guys names but if you search Avid on barnstormers you should see an add pop up for them. If you watch my gear video I think I posted the Link.
Love the avid! What brand is that shelter? Where did you buy it from?
Nice airplane you have now ! Is this carbon covering in the cowl ?
why are you selling it? nice bird
I love it but I feel like I need a bigger plane now.
Hey good work way to include some lessons learned in the video. I’m reminded every time I fly my Avid I have to be way ahead of it on any kind of cross wind control. VS my short wing piper clipper.
Thanks Tony, yes these small light planes are really affected by wind.
Great looking Avid! I have to get some color on mine now 😂
Yes, very special to take your dad flying. Loved the video! Always keep an eye on the wind forecast. Can't wait till the cross country video comes out!
love the content!
Do you have magnetos or electric??
I have electric, 2 dual Ducati ignition coils.
So happy to see your Avid flying again. So special to have your dad with you! BTW, love the new cowlings!
Me too lol. Took a little longer then I thought it would. Thank you tons Doug.
Beautiful video, nice flying airplane, thanks for posting. Can't wait til next video !
Thanks Ron, it was a challenging day to fly in, But it was awesome having the old man with me this time.
Where is this pond in the desert? I am resurrecting an old, uncared for Avid B, putting on some mods and most likely a 670 due to my high desert altitude (N.Utah). Fun video!
Randy I am out in the Sacramento CA Area. So lots of farm land, rivers and rolling hills to the west and the Sierras to the east. I don't have much drive to take the Avid to Tahoe yet, haha.
Lets gooo
It was a blast
so much fun. nice job Mr.
Thanks man!
I think the order goes. Dad. Mom. Wife. Child. Not sure where the dog fits in. So far I’ve got uncle in the logbook. My apologies to my uncle Dave. Looking forward to your landmark flight myself. More videos when you can please. Thanks David.
@@sethlucas8362 The order of life you are willing to sacrifice? Haha Jk man. I was told by a wise pilot, the goal is not to get your wife to fly with you, it is to get her to fly with you again.
I prefer Yellow, my Avid is Yellow! Thank you for this video. Have you done any recent videos?
Yes editing it now. will upload soon with finding.
