NORTH AMERICAN FJ-1 FURY: SCRATCH-BUILT MASTERPIECE IN ACTION!
Today we are at the Bear Mountain Flyers field in Arvin California and are featuring Rodger Hecht's gorgeous build based off of John Morgan's design, a stunning model of a North American FJ-1 Fury!
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_American_FJ-1_Fury
This early, straight-wing jet was tested by the Navy, but was never really formally adopted in large numbers. Before the first production FJ-1 was even delivered, and after several operational failures, the initial order for 100 units was trimmed to only 30 because more promising naval fighter designs had entered development. As a sort of "stop-gap" aircraft, it incorporated a number of P-51 Mustang design features, most notably the empennage, canopy, and main wings. It proved to be underpowered (like most early jets) and had issues with it's intricate nose gear.
A model seldom seen in the RC world, John Morgan captured the lines beautifully, and Rodger's idea to make it an EDF jet was just the icing on the cake!
Enjoy the flight my friends!

Some of the nicest scale flying I have seen in a while. Well done Sir!! Well done! wjm
@@hotscarywjm I totally agree with you my friend 😊👍
All that taxi and full throttle the whole time. The batteries died. The stuttering is a clear sign. The speed controls cut motor power as the voltage drops then as the load drops, the voltage increases and the speed controls try to apply power again. This happens in a rapid cycle. Hence the stuttering.
@@petercyr3508 Completely agree with you Peter!
Poor thing!!!
@@kingghidorah8106 Right?!
@@JustwingitRC i feel like aircraft should be treated like babies... like 140 ton 78meter long babies. Therefore the scale models should be treated like embryos.
@kingghidorah8106 Agreed 😊👍
5:48 oops
Indeed my friend...
4:31 awesome landing

John Morgans planes still getting built and flown. Thanks to Rodger, Brent, John K, Bentley, and anyone keeping his legacy alive...and flying. Great flying by the test pilot as usual...

Beautiful aircraft. Nice to see realistic flight of a scale model
@@Michael-Nic-l1d Thank you Michael! A great looking, expertly flown model aircraft for sure my friend 👍
Thanks John for taking the time to vid my little jet. It was fun hanging out with you. Totally enjoyed watching you fly the turbine MB339.

@@collinmccallum Thanks Collin! Rodger did a great job on the build and Brent presents the jet wonderfully in the air!
Wow that looks fantastic Roger, very nice model! Great flying Brent and capturing it on video John!
@@funscalemodels9782 Thanks Derek, it's a fantastic model jet for sure 👍
Brilliant! Johnnie Mate!!
Thanks Jono mate!! Cheers bro!
Are the rings of the main wing and rear stabilizing ring on the same plane? Or, are they placed in an attitude of attack to one another, as with a Wingfoil board? The Wingfoil main front wing has a positive attack of 2°. And the smaller rear foil has a negative attack of 1.5°. I'm considering experimenting with rings on hulls for lift. Cheers
@@robertcain3426 Although I didn't build the model Robert, it appears as though the tail ring is placed a bit higher along the flight axis than the main annular wings or "rings". I linked the plans for the build from the "Outerzone" website in the description and perhaps you can examine those to answer your questions. Hope this helps, Cheers!
@@JustwingitRC Yes, it znswered my question, thanks. And yes it does have an offset to increase attack. Cheers
@robertcain3426 Great to hear 👍
Guten Tag Herr Hecht, schoener Flieger!
"Likewise my Pal!"
@johnlong7504 👍
would make a brilliant 3d print today with 40mm edfs..
I agree Richie, that would be fun!
I also had the GWS E Starter. It was fun to build and to fly.
GWS made some great planes back in the day!
I had that one. Brushed 3ch. It floated forever
A floater for sure my friend!!
Slow, nose high and down wind and with a heavy plane. I’m surprised it didn’t end worse.
I hear you but you obviously didn't catch the fact that I had lost power and that was a dead-stick landing. I agree it could have been worse, but also think it ended okay all things considered. All the best to you!
Where are you flying?
@@mikercflyer7383 This was at the Bear Mountain Flyers field in Arvin California 👍
What don't you understand about stalling a plane
Absolutely awesome !Very clever!Cheers from France !Bonne Année !
Merci Erik, content que ça te plaise ! Bonne année à toi mon ami !
I used to fly RC. I stuvk to foamies. It sucks tc build something just to lose it in a mere second.
Indeed my friend, indeed!
I was just there in September! I drove up to fly with the group there and had a great morning. Hopefully I can make it out there again real soon. It was great seeing the guys that I learned from all those years ago. I hope you had a great Christmas and a fantastic new years! I fly mine on 3s 3200s as well. Are you using any nose weight? I put quite a bit of nose weight in the front of mine to get it to the recommended CG but I've heard others say it'll fly well on a 3s 3200 with no nose weight, just shoved all the way forward.
Hey there brother! Isn't it a great place to fly?! I didn't use any nose weight at all, like you I just shoved the battery forward and the C/G looked fine to me. As you can see in the video, the plane flew great! I've since taken it apart and put it back in it's box due to need of storage space. I had a great Christmas and a Happy New Year, hope you did too brother! Hopefuly we can catch up soon, all the best!
Does it turn even right?
@@sibylvane75 At 02:12 in the video Thomas brings it around to the right, so yes, it can even turn right 😊👍
Well done on build to ya man 🤙🤙🤙
@@NathanWaldock For sure Nathan! Thomas did a great job on the build and on the flight 👍
❤ the aircraft but the engine sound doesn't fit, should have installed a radial would have been more scale. But not my build
@@PhilStewart-xf9rp I hear you Phil, builders preference. But you gotta admit, that 4 cylinder boxer pulls that plane around nicely 😉! All the best to you my friend 👍
Yeah but then it would have a lame un scale small prop. ;)
@hechtspeed Absolutely! I couldn't agree more 😊👍
What in tarnation. That is cool. Reminds me of the early 1920s flying contraptions like the Flying Saucer Wing plane. lol
@@FarmerFpv Absolutely! Proves that you can get practically anything to fly 👍
