I agree with you Sean. I can only fish with my flies. To be able to make something with my hands that blends into nature so well that a fish wants to eat it is exhilarating. I also like to modify a pattern to make it a more creative process.

Catching a salmon on a self made and designed fly from the materials available will always be the ultimate buzz for me. Perhaps it will remain a joy and hobby when my shoulders eventually pack up on me but until then I will continue to chase my dog around and interfere with pheasants in order to obtain some fluff to tie with

Hush!🤫that was popular in the late 60's. I was in my teens. Sean, you must love music from that era cuz you don't look that old. Oh yeah, awesome double. Rule of thumb where I live, fall colors for salmon and browns in the Lake Ontario tribs. That Stoats Tail gold and orange fit the bill. I saw a stoat (ermine) about 25 years ago, in its brown coat, drag a dead rabbit under a wood pile. Last winter I saw one in it's winter coat and black tip tail hunting behind my old machine shed. Your awesome Sean, got me all pumped up with this short!😅❤✊️

100% agree, i had to build a loft extension as a tying room. Spent £1000's on materials as i tie for Salmon, Trout and Big Saltwater use.

Very well explained Sean. And I agree it is a hobby in itself that gets hold of you. I too have spent a small fortune on this hobby but to catch on your own is the ultimate. But always make sure to tie a couple of that same pattern, just in case.😊👍

Great looking fly and work! Sean what diam of tube is that you are tying on please? If its standard outer tubing can I ask how the drainer disk fits over this ? As you know normally the hole in coneheads, drainer disks etc will only fit the liner tube used within the std outer tube? Any advice would be much appreciated. Tks
@@thedoggedangler thanks very much 👍. That is 1.8mm tubing and I was hoping for a slimline profile anyway. If you are wanting to use larger 3mm tubing, just complete your fly on it and then add liner tubing. It also has the advantage that should the cone dull or chip you just cut off and add more liner tubing and cone without needing to tie a new fly. Another alternative is to add a section of 3mm to a liner and then tie into it with super glue wrapped just before head. This gives you the larger profile but then slims down at the head for the cone. Hope that is helpful?

Sean, do you melt the tube end to secure the cone head in place after the rest of the fly is tied and do you use superglue on the inside of the cone?
@@michaelmaxwell5586 Hu Michael, when putting the cone directly onto the tube I'm tying I put super glue on thread, put cone over and then burr end. If I'm using a liner and cone, I just insert and burr as there is no thread to glue to. Hope that makes sense?

Always used dyed Guinea Fowl, much easier than Jay and easier to obtain. Tried Partridge dyed but too soft and collapses easily.
@@simonyoung908 absolutely Simon and gives a nice longer front hackle too usually. I have also used blue grizzle hackle but Guinea fowl is definitely preferred

@@WeeManSham all anglers are well spaced out but I would have preferred him to step out when I was waving so I could have let that fish run as opposed to fighting it on the lip of pool leaving the point fly dangling. Don't think it was intentional, he just didn't know the craic I think 👍
