Greedy companies not listening to their customers. That’s it.

  • @patrici509

The consumer is the price maker. The business is the price taker. If the price on any item is apparently too high. We have the power to walk away. This is a long standing principle in business and economics. We actually have the power. Not the seller. They need us. If we don't buy, then the business loses a customer. Customer acquisition cost is extremely expensive for any business. However, if that same business treats the customer with respect and fairness, it is reflected in a much less expensive customer retention cost. I don't ride a new bike. I purchased a used Chicago Schwinn road bike for $150. It's a thin tube steel frame with Campy groupset and it's all original. Why would I spend multiple thousands of dollars for an ultralight? I do 90% of my own repairs and upgrades. And I have something that is essential. And can't be bought or sold. I love the sport of road cycling.

This is a great option for new riders because it lowers the barrier of entry. So if you new to cycling and just can't get outside enough this is a awesome option and let's face it, more subs = higher profits and that's the point of this bike. Oh and it is super quiet, our fan is louder.

My first mountain bike was a some trek model my uncle bought me as we went riding every weekend in Tennessee. It was $450 in 2008. His cannondale was $700. Those bikes lasted us years and probably 20k miles. Mine went kaput around 2-3 years ago. The cheapest mountain bikes I see now are around $1200. And they go up from there.

Car industrie is doing the same. They felt so good about the amount of cars they could sell during 2020 till 2022. They sold high priced cars and could charge extra for the pure existence of a product. And they got rid of the cheap options thinking all people will buy expensive cars forever. Now the cheap money is over and everything got expensive and they are not selling 60k cars anymore like there is no tomorrow. They have to downsize their entire operations. They ended the cheap and simple cars and now they have nothing that people would actualy buy, when they (the car company) would need it the most. Shot themselfs in the food.

Last visit to the local fancy mtb shop (Bay Area, California), they said they have a 2 weeks wait list on repair and also they do not have the tools for my 2005 bike. I had a freewheel issue. Nice people but the young guy had never seen my tech and went to show me the new freewheels, with hundreds of… something… catch? per revolution, (you start to pedal and it catches right away - I did not know that mine with 4 catches does not) that cost up to $500. And they make some annoying loud noise. Also it’s scary to see how complex they look inside. I can see the cost of maintenance down the road. Now, they may be doing great as a business, they cover that niche, and another shop further away covers the ‘family’ segment and fixed my problem in minutes: great!

I love cycling. I also (supposedly unrelated) love HiFi. You could tape the exact same video, swap every mention of bicycles with the word "stereo" and it would be just as relevant. In fact, I've seen several HiFi UA-camrs making almost all of the same arguments, including the importance of local shops, the constant rise in prices and the angry finger shake at gatekeepers. So, if two completely unrelated industries are going through such similar processes, maybe there's a bigger underlying phenomenon here?

Just bought the Zwift Ride. 1. I dont want to use my good road bike indoors and put unnecessary miles on it 2. I dont want to have the hassle in installing and de-installing the bike when the weather in winter is good enough 3. I dont want to buy an extra bike only for Zwift 4. This seems to be a well thought-out all-in-one product for Zwift, very convenient. Let´s see if it holds up in practice.

I've been to a couple of the bike shops that Trek has bought up here in northern virginia. Honestly, the mechanics and managers are the same guys from the mom and pop that it was before--all people that have grown up basically in the area; so to me, the now trek shop feels like an updated mom and pop. I like it!

In northern NJ there are cycling teams that traverse the mountains and valleys and everyone has a $15k bike and wearing space suits. And it’s not just groups of 2,4,5 riders. Sometimes there is 20. And they are flying too. The cars have to stop as they take up the entire road. It’s actually dangerous. The real dangerous are the little kids on their eBikes. No license or regulations. They are zooming at 25 mph and have no brains so they are harming the landscape and pushing seniors out of the paths. They think their motor cross racers. Cyclists are getting killed and pedestrians are getting hit daily in NYC. Look at the two hockey players in southern NJ. This industry is gone wild. The roads are really for cars and the sidewalks are for pedestrians, dog, walkers, and child strollers.

A brand new BMW F900GS adventure MOTORCYCLE starts at less than $15k MSRP. BMW bikes are expensive even by motorcycle standards. Your carbon bike may be very fancy, but you simply can’t convince me it requires as much engineering, labor cost, material cost, etc of a vehicle with a sophisticated engine, transmission, suspension setup, fuel system, import duties, etc etc. if you can afford a crazy expensive bicycle then go for it I guess but it seems rather ridiculous.

There is a serious disconnect between the bike industry and the ordinary cyclist....... Expensive things I really don't need - really not needed 1. Hydraulic disc brakes or any disc brakes - I don't need or want disc brakes ! 2. Carbon fibre wheels, I am totally happy with a $500 alloy wheelset 3. Electronic shifting - yes this is nice but no I don't need it and the new 12-speed systems are obscenely expensive - 11-speed dura ace mechanical was amazing and costs about a third of what DA 12-speed Di2 costs. Interestingly the cost of Di2 groupsets pretty much doubled with the upgrade from 11-speed to 12-speed. Do we really need 12 speed ? Nope.

I was a Bikes Inc. customer from 1993 up until Trek bought them out and really miss them. I bought my last bike, a 2018 Tarmac, from the Southlake store. I still own and ride it at least 2 days a week and my cheap aluminum bike the other days. I have to baby it to make it last as long as I can because I can't afford to replace it with what a similar spec bike costs now. The Tarmac Pro has increased 35 to 40 percent in price from 2018. That Canyon does look sweet and is right at my max price point of 4K. I really enjoy your channel and hope you keep bringing great content.

When you make something useful and practical a luxury item, the mess begins (also known as discriminatory, racist elite). There are groups where if you do not have something to match their fancy trash, you are not allowed to ride with them. Therefore, just ride as you like/can with what you have. Cycling has fallen into the elite culture, it is not anymore about the machine you use as transportation, the tool for your trade or simply, the hobby, feeling better because exercising outdoors, enjoying landscape at slow paced ride. I do not deny that technology has improved (like brake systems, gears, materials among others) but you can not impose a $15,000 bicycle as "entry level" when what you need is something reliable, easy to repair/maintain, that you do not need rocket scientist knowledge to do a simple adjustment (brakes), that you do not need star trek like tools to fix it in the middle of nowhere. In the end, you still have to push the pedals 🤣
