Tommy Guns down Cannon & Co | Sunderland vs Stoke
Sunderland played host to Stoke City and faced a younger side for the first time this season. The Black Cats were looking to end a run of six games without a win to stay in the automatic promotion hunt. Things got off to a terrible start though, with Lewis Koumas opening the scoring inside of six minutes. Sunderland hit back with an equaliser the very next minute and then proceeded to lay siege to Stoke's penalty box.
Sunderland amassed 21 shots inside the Stoke box and won over 60% of their duels but struggled to find a way through until three minutes from time.
Who played well? Who needs to improve? And have Stoke exposed a weakness in Sunderland's shape?

Sunderland slap Wednesday into next week

Sunderland welcomed a confident Sheffield Wednesday to the Stadium of Light for their first home game of the season. Sunderland signed Lorient manager Regis Le Bris this week. A year ago he was wanted by Nice and Leeds United. He has a reputation for developing youth players, after 10 years heading up Lorient's Academy and made Lorient the surprise League 1 package in 2022/23 in his first season in management. His second season was a disaster though and ended in relegation last summer. With an overachieving t...

Hmmm, how about Lemon, Owers, Corner & Moore? 4 home grown players against Rotherham in 1987 in a 7-1 win? All of them scored too. Although I think the current lads are a slight improvement?
Brilliant...I might try to include that next time all four play. I'll credit you. Agreed that the current four are better than them.
So pleased to see you back thanks as always...
Love it. Cheers!
It’s been a good few months since we finished a team off, hoping tonight will be more comfortable viewing than we’ve had of late.
We've looked ace for the first hour of every game largely. Another win tonight keeps us right in amongst it.
A decent game and a credit to every player out there in such windy conditions. We created plenty of chances and missed four gilt-edge ones, which was a concern. However, heads didn't drop, and we prevailed. Watson scored the winner after missing a sitter, a good sign from a young lad. Crosses into the box, and a striker's run still looks like a chicken-and-egg situation. Isidor has impressed but still looks like a wide player who can play through the middle. Roberts although better can only offer a near-post ball or a cutback when he does go on the outside. That doesn't help. Rigg has lost some of his early-season sparkle. We need to be careful of burnout. Jobe is by no means immune from that either. We need Samed and Browne to give us options to rotate. Samed in particular would free up Neil to play further forward, giving the kids a break. If we can stay in the mix till we've got a bigger pool to choose from it should be an interesting season.
I’m hoping the apparent lack of sharpness was down to the atrocious conditions and that we’ll back to our best for Bristol City. Thanks as always for your great input Alt, HWTL.
Whose idea to have women commentators on mens football doent sound right..
I thought both commentators were a bit flat and often got player names wrong. A distinct lack of excitement from them. Made me miss Frankie.
Not an excuse but I think the commentators on the Sky + games aren’t at the ground in person, just in a studio somewhere.
"Leaves them out running for too long" - This tells me that Regis does not trust his bench.
I did notice Stoke were trying to tempt us into pressing (as Boro did).
yeah...a small niggling worry at the back of my mind. Let's see if other teams do it and if it has damaging success. I mean we conceded to Plymouth and Watford to lose from counters, but they are different situations. I just wonder if stretching us to make space to play through us is something we'll see more of?
Bit harsh on paddy 1st half. He kept the ball well. If he had played dan Neil's ball that you praised, you'd be calling it wasteful.
Nah...I like Paddy and he was outstanding second half. And all game his commitment to defensive work was excellent. I do think he cuts inside too predictably to little effect. All I want is for him to think about variety. Go inside, go outside, play early balls. If he mixes it up , he/we will have more success. But I take your point, he had a good game. I certainly think he's an automatic pick for tonight.
@altending He will score tonight( bold prediction, but i can feel it in my water!)
I believe. I'll mention you if he does.
@@leilaandbellasvlogs5137What a prediction !! Hope you had money on it😂
@bradpalmer2953 After halftime i stuck a tenner on him to score anytime .6/1.
So pleased we didn't cock it up 😅 what a brilliant assessment. Thanks! Bless them playing in that horrendous weather. Poor Luke reportedly unwell too. Was looking forward to your analysis of the Sheffield game. Great performance despite 0 pnts.
I thought we were comfortably the better team against the Blades. I'll be really annoyed if we don't give them a pasting at home to prove it.
@altending absolutely. Tasty match indeed! Bet lads can't wait.
great commentary
TY. Glad you enjoyed it.
Good to have you back Trenches
Thank you very much. It's good to be back.
Glad to see your expertly produced vids are back mate. And even more pleased you refrained from covering any of those draws(i don’t think many of us would have wanted to relive those😂). Spot on as always with your player analysis. Conditions were awful but we had more than enough chances to put this game to bed long before the 87 minute mark. A long overdue return to winning ways, and lets hope we can continue the trend tonight. 🤞🏼🇵🇪 Hope you’re well marra?
It's confusing because we play football great for an hour every week and just seem unlucky not to score, but then it happens every week.
@ totally mate. The worrying thing for me is that it’s almost been an exact replica of last season so far. I think tonight is a good test of where our mindset now is. Are we gonna roll up our sleeves and perform for the full 90, or repeat that trend you correctly highlighted? A huge game for me, a win will keep us up with the top three and hopefully spur us on in our belief that we can achieve a top two finish.
Bogey team the Robins. I absolutely do not want to hear the names Anis Mehmeti or Nahki Wells let alone see them on the scoresheet
@ 😂😂 yeah
@ shocking going forward tonight. Far too casual in midfield, zero urgency, and a lack of outlets, sticking to our sole striker formation. Totally bored by our insistance on one up top at home now.
Convinced both Hjelde and Alese are great CB but we’re forced to play them at LB cause we don’t have cover for Cirkin. Great analysis as always, I’m a swine in shit when I see a new video has been posted
Happy to be back and satisfying that itch. Will try and get the Robins game done before the weekend, but can't promise.
Another good analysis, thanks. Good spot on Isidor's poor pressing, it's one area in which Mayenda and Connolly make a better contribution. Not sure I agree with you about Roberts being wasteful, though, I thought he worked his socks off, was a threat all game, and with decent finishing from others would have a couple more assists.
He does it a lot in the press and it drops his team mates who commit to it in the shit. Stick to purpose Wilson and we'll be better for it. Love him though.
Hi Alt,, been waiting an age for this !! At last, something to shout about. After a really goood. showing against SU, i never thought we'd get beat here. Thank the lord for young Tommy not being frightened to have a go. Deserved player of the match n' will only get better. Im glad you cleared up Myenders header was going wide, it makes the offside easier to swallow. Stoke got off lightly here, with 3 sitters going begging. Never mind, we're back to winning ways. A lot of noise has been made about Clark coming back on loan in Jan ?? He's been a huge disappointment and the fans hate him. Imo, we dont need him back as Watson and Mundle are doing well in his possition. Whats your take on it Alt ?? Thanks for the usual outstanding vid you've done mate, was bouncing when i saw the dot on your 'AE' (great being an insomniac at times 😂. Hope you get t' do a 3-1 win tonight against BC. Enjoy tonight and the rest of the week Alt,,,, keeping an 👁🗨 open for you, lol. Good luck and much appreciation my friend. 👍
Very kind words, thank you. On Clarke, it's like an old love - never go back. I agree, we don't need him. If he comes back then we lose Tommy or Mundle for no reason, there doesn't seem much upside to bringing him back, our left wing has more than matched his contribution. Let's spend the money on a better striker, or a fullback or a proper CDM if Samed isn't a real person.
Alese is just out of position at left back. Gets forward but doesn’t get back. He’s 4th choice center back so we’re trying to force him to learn full back.
It is common sense he should return to defending after using the wing to attack, if he cant understand that he should not be in the team.
I like Alese, I think he's our best one-on-one defender facing up to players. He just looked rusty and out of practice against that overheard ball. Hopefully that is all it is.
Yesssssa
Boom. We're back.
Any new videos???
Yes... back on it today. Work has been busy, but I'll be with you all for the rest of the season
@altending good man
Tous ce boucan a L’OM pour ce semblant de carrière ?? 😂😂 allez allez ça t’apprendra, bien fait pour ta misérable pomme . ALLEZ L’OM !!!!!
Another brilliant video (looking forward to the Neil one when it comes out… maybe over the international break to help alleviate the boredom? 👀). Why do you think we’ve struggled so much last 2 games given how well we’ve played at times this season?
Thanks
The squad is doing it not individuals.
Another great video trenchy. Love watching your analysis of the games.
The controlled possession was a joy to watch. The outstanding distribution from the center backs was the platform that set it up. It's no coincidence that Neil shone when we had that much of the ball and he had Isidor make runs in behind. One of the shrewdest things RLB has done is to let him play his way back into form. HIs after-match comments about playing deeper that it had aided his development and he was happy to play there for the team also tell us that he doesn't see this as his long-term position. This was backed up by his saying he would welcome Hendersons return which if he played would release him to play further up the pitch. The lad has sacrificed his natural game since Evans got injured. The midfield balance at the moment is really good but we need to get the most out of Neils undoubted talent.
Have to say this was probably the best football ive seen us play. Even the bloke behind me who hates neil was praising him
You, I click like BEFORE watching your vid 😊
SAFC released a 'Dan Neil, All the touches' video similar to (but not as good as) the multitude of player analysis videos you have released during your channel's life. It was a visual display of Dan's positions, touches and passes, and it served as a timely reminder of the player's ability after a few weeks of less than perfect performances that drew questions and criticism. BUT... the beauty of YOUR videos are your editing style, voice over explanations, and even labelling the player so that us viewers with less than 20/20 vision can locate the relevant player instantly as the clip starts without the need to scan back and forth... "Oh, there he is, yes, ohhh next clip...". In this video, you have clearly identified Dan's role, his movements and just as importantly, the REASONS for his positioning in the team and the role he has been learning. For years we have been used to seeing him further forward, playing in and around that zone 14 more and making more regular bursts into the box with shots at goal. Yes, he will still do that, but I for one, now appreciate how Le Bris has redefined his place in the team and how Dan and every other player fit into their roles in the team. YOU do this!! and that is one of several reasons why I eagerly await your uploads. LIKED, SUBSCRIBED and SHARED with a few friends with just a little hint of smugness 😂 Thank you Sir.
I absolutely love these videos! Extremely grateful to have them. I’m abroad for almost all of the season so can’t watch many of the matches so it’s class to catch up on here and the tactical analysis is superb!
Hi Alt - Brilliant vid. In other times, this was the type of game we might have lost. 'Typical Sunderland' is no more - I guess that means we're atypical Sunderland now.
Thanks
Simply outstanding analysis. I just domt see what you do until you spell it out. 💯🌟😎
Thanks
Another tremendous video. Thanks.
I've heard Paolo Maldini likes to have a glass of wine, close his eyes and imagine he was as good a footballer as Luke 09.
I believe I don’t want to wake up from this dream. Thanks Alt for the best analysis and commentary on the Web.
Always look forward to your content!
Superb analysis, as always. The extent of our rotation is often difficult to track in real time, and the model demands massive team concentration but appears to be getting better week on week. Happy happy days!
Thank you Altending. Love watching these.
Brilliant mate as always 👏 keep up the great work..
