I’m personally surprised no one brought up an important reason for selling popcorn at theaters: profit. I don’t know the exact statistics but I imagine that a good chunk of the profits made by movie theaters is generated via the selling of concessions. I mean people do get hungry while watching a movie and they would be willing to spend money for food like popcorn. I have seen the Regal Theater at the local mall where I live add different food options a few years ago such as burgers and pulled pork as well as the ubiquitous popcorn, candy and fountain soda.

sounds like the guy had some kind of sensory squick that affects a small amount of the population and kinda assumed everyone else felt the same. he was incredibly unserious but it sucks people immediately dismissed his problem. maybe having some popcorn free areas could be good for movie theaters for people who dont like the sound of popcorn or some kind of soundproofing in each individual theater if you cant have a totally separate room?
