Riding the Morena Pump Station Construction

  • We're riding through a stretch of Friars Rd to Morena Blvd that's been under construction for years. But, I was happy to learn, it's planned, and looks to be on schedule!
Details for the project are here: www.sandiego.g...
I appreciate the city maintaining access for people on bikes, even if it means limiting access for those driving cars.
    Thanks for watching.
These videos can be scary, but please know that my goal isn't to deter people from riding bikes in San Diego, but to show the real-world conditions. Sometimes it's pleasant, sometimes it's just fine, and other times there's tension and conflict.
The roads in San Diego should be safe and accessible to everyone without the use of a car. My hope is that these videos help those in power make better decisions for all our safety. I also believe that the more people who decide to ride, the safer the roads will become.
Please remember to support your local bike safety and mobility advocacy organizations, like BikeSD (bikesd.org/), the San Diego County Bike Coalition (sdbikecoalitio...) and Circulate San Diego (www.circulates...)

I remember when that road was open for a month or less, and then BAM road closed. Thanks for the update!

I think that's probably absolute worst place you can choose to ride a bike. I'm a tow truck driver and I try to spend the least amount of time on the side of the road. Be safe my man 👍

So, two things: 1 is that it's not that bad, considering a separated bike lane for those going west, and the pretty low traffic going east with us; 2 is that the city and our typography don't provide a lot of other options. We could take the OB bike path, but it doesn't connect back up to Friars until Fashion Valley mall. We're at the mercy of options that for short.

@TheAwflores That's quite the argument. Never mind all the tow truck drivers out there helping people in need, and clearing the roads after crashes that increase danger for others and increase travel times. If the tow truck driver is a thief, so is every driver parking where they shouldn't. A driver in a bike lane is stealing from everyone else on a bike. A driver double parking is stealing from every one else driving on the road. Every driver parking in a space longer than they're supposed to is stealing from the other drivers who are looking for parking.

I ride this road both ways at least 3x/week. It kind of sucks but hey at least there's dedicated bike lanes. Wish it wasn't a labyrinth to go westbound but it is what it is. Really does seem like it's been under construction forever.

I work at a place where we get construction delays all the time. I was relieved that this was according to schedule.

So, does bike traffic go both ways through there? I would like to find a way to the YMCA from Mission Hills. The Morena route is too dangerous for me. I have thought about taking Pacific Hwy around to Friars, but confusion about where bikes are supposed to go has stopped me.
About that Morena situation: I would love to see a ride from Taylor to Napa and an analysis on how to do it safely. Or somewhat safely, anyway. And then back. Crossing all those freeway onramps when you have to go south toward Taylor... I have no idea how to actually survive that maneuver. LOL.
Just found this channel. So helpful and insightful. Thank you.

Welcome, @missmolliepink! This particular section of Friars DOES have bike lanes both ways. The westbound is protected, and the eastbound is the paint I'm riding in.
A connection to Napa would be interesting, but there's a lot of river that would have to be built through/over (and the roads that currently cross it tend to get flooded when it rains). Though the construction seems to be held up, my hope is that once that Riverwalk area gets developed, we'll get connections that don't currently exist. I'd like to see Colusa St connect over to Hotel Circle Pl, giving folks a bit north more access to the OB Bike Path.

honestly I'm surprised that hasn't caused a huge uproar in the community that they have two "HUGE" bike lanes and not bidirectional car taffic

I think it's just a matter of math. The geometry allows for the bike lanes, but maybe not cars and trucks. Since this road goes UNDER Morena, the people on bikes need it to access the river path, since the OB bike path is impossible for a person a bike to get to without getting into a dangerous area.
