2024-09 Tough Fishing. Miss Port Fierce and Orlando Princess. Lot of lost rigs to sharks.

It's been tough for September for me. I've been on 3 trips in September (unusual for me. I usually go once or twice a month) and I can't say that any of the trips were stellar. It was slow and I did bad in terms of catching. But I'm always happy to be on the water getting my line wet. Hoping that it will only improve going forward! Tight lines!
July 26, 2024 - Headboat fishing on Orlando Princess - Cape Canaveral, Florida - Mangrove snappers

Thermocline is has slowed down the catching in general, but sharks are still very active. It's a bad combo. I managed to catch 4 mangrove snappers and had enough to share with one of the neighbors. I always go in with low expectations - that it's still good to be on the water even if I don't catch - and will continue to do that because I've set high expectations in the past and got burned, lol....

I skipped last year's red snapper season, but I decided to go this year because I had the itch from not getting to bottom fish much in Los Barriles, Mexico. Due to supply and demand, the ticket price was higher than normal and I contemplated, but again, the itch was strong. I caught a decent keeper red snapper and caught another to give away to a fellow angler without fish. I also caught two ma...

Always a blast to watch your vids Sir! Keep up the good work 👍
Hi, I know this was from a video in 2020 but when you broke the st croix legend xtreme did they send you the new model?? And how much is the difference you had to pay?
@@emz7638 Yup they sent me the new model. I don’t remember exactly how much, but I know that it was shipping + difference in retail price which wasn’t much at the time (if I am remembering correctly).
@ how do they compare?? I just bought the gen 1 off marketplace for $275 and im loving it right now im just wondering what they could’ve improved upon in the new one
@ I actually prefer the first gen for performance. The new one seems stiffer to me and it’s not as fun. I’m not sure if it’s any more sensitive than the first gen. The only thing I didn’t like about the first gen is the white handle that got dirty quickly. I like to keep my gear as clean as possible and I didn’t like that. Probably not a problem for many people.
@@theanglercrew7059 yeah I’ve heard from a couple people they prefer the older one as it was more balanced too, I got the black handle one so it’s hard to see if it gets dirty and gives it a cleaner look, anyways thanks for the response. There really isn’t much information about the gen 1 version.
Have you tried the other headboat down the street yet? Was wondering what your experience was with them.
@@hotpolymer which headboat are you referring to? I was on Orlando (Canaveral) Princess and Ocean Princess in the last couple of months. 👍🏼
@@theanglercrew7059 oh yeah the ocean princess. Was that trip.productive? Do you have a UA-cam trip video on that boat? I would like to see their operation.
@@hotpolymerat 8:11, that’s the trip on Orlando (Canaveral) Princess and at 15:49, that’s the trip on Ocean Obsession 2. I like both boats and really can’t say one is better over the other. Orlando/Canaveral Princess is bigger and probably more comfortable, but it gets canceled more frequently.
@@theanglercrew7059 got it. Noticed they hang the bait pale over the rail. Never seen that before on a head boat. Do you prefer mono or braid on the depths these boats fish? I used braid the first time on Orlando princess and may start using it because the bite is so sensitive. Still haven’t decided since their house rods already have the heavy mono rigged already. Just trying new approaches and tactics. I try to go once every other year down in Florida.
@ they hang it over the rail on OO2, but not OP. I prefer braid for sure. Normally fish 80-110ft deep water, so it’s not too deep. Tight lines!
Just booked my 39hr trip for November 22nd departure stern 4 almost where you were. I just saw Dylan post about about red snapper extension coming up end of month beginning of next month possibly
Ayee booked the same trip
@the1995mikal let's roll can't wait to meet ya. Let's catch some limits
Got a few free days in January when I’m in Orlando Florida area,is the Orlando Princess worth it that time of year?
Hey man. Question for ya. Did you use a chicken rig at all on this Hubbards trip?
@@ronmckinney4334 I personally didn’t. I used the rig they recommend (double snelled rig). I saw their recent video and it looks like they are busy rebuilding the dock and cleaning up the area. Luckily the boats made it out fine. 👍🏼
@theanglercrew7059 yes I saw that yesterday. Sea spirit here at ponce inlet is also closed till November. Princess fleet canceled my Saturday full day so I took the half day but it was like fishing in chocolate milk unfortunately they said it usually takes about 10 days to settle back to normal condition

New subscriber here! Thanks for sharing brother I’m taking my first trip on princess this weekend, I’m pumped!
@@quentinwalker5804 sweet! Remember, go in with low expectations that being on the water is better than sitting at home, lol. I went out last Saturday and it was slim pickins for me (didn’t get a chance to edit yet). Hopefully it’s better this weekend. Tight lines!
I have questions bro. 1st are weekday trips shoulder to shoulder? 2nd can u spj on any trips? 3rd is the boat, mainly googans, or are there real anglers with curtesy and have good headboat etiquette?
@@paidslave1217 take everything I say with a grain of salt lol. 1. Weekday trips can still get shoulder to shoulder, if there are big groups coming together (ex. company team outing). You might get lucky and end up going with 19 other people. They need a minimum of 20 to go out. 2. You can jig as much as you want to, but from what I’ve been seeing, it’s been iffy - usually fishing 80-120 ft of water. I saw someone catch a 15+ lb red snapper on a jig 3 trips ago. 3. It’s a mixed bag lol. I sometimes fish next to party boat newbies and don’t tangle at all. I was just on a trip and one of the regulars was obnoxious and people were making jokes about him when he wasn’t around (about how obnoxious he was). Tight lines!
@theanglercrew7059 thanks for the info. Been curious about this boat for a while. I don't have high expectations. Just going to get somebody some headboat and sea legs experience for a yankee capt or American patriot trip.
Dang that was a tough day but you did great.
I would have kept the bluefish nothing wrong with them if you know how
Just bought the regulars card for this charter. The deal is best in the business
Man, I can’t get over how tightly they pack everyone in Florida.. great video and nice straw hat! Nice trigger! That’s one fish I’ve never caught.
@@fishingtacklechannel Ty! Yup, it gets cozy hahah. I’ve seen a lot of triggers at OCMD inlet. Have you fished there yet? Lot of sheepshead and togs too at the right time of the year.

Have you noticed any trends that op just goes to some of the same spots just prone to sharks? Or are sharks more in certain months?
@@hotpolymer No, I think the captain tries to get away from the sharks, but it’s open water and they are thick around this time of the year. They are always around, but it seems to be worse during the summer months.
Nice! Youll get it next time! Hook size and sinker weight your using?
I use 3/0 - 4/0 for hook size and for sinker, it really depends on the current. I use 3 - 6 oz and I was able to hold bottom with 3 oz on this trip.

the live bait did the trick!
@@sc1742 I think swapping bait did the trick as well. Caught two of them on cut bait on this trip. 👍🏼
I find it quite funny when folks are targeting for Red Snapper, they couldn’t limit out. But when it’s not in season, you couldn’t even avoid them!
Hahah exactly!
You had fun and caught a couple of fish. I certainly would not go out with that captain again. Very poor results for an all day trip. Better luck next time .
Looking at the reports on fb, it looks like it’s slow for a lot of headboats right now. I think the captain tried and moved us around and hopefully it’ll improve soon. I definitely had luck on my side on this trip. Tight lines!
"it's fishing, not catching" sometime all you need are 1-2 nice fish to make the trip worth while. nice mangrove!
@@stevechiu8264 💯!
Is it always shoulder to shoulder on that boat? I live close and have been curious about that boat.
@@paidslave1217 headboats usually are elbow to elbow, but mostly towards the stern area. It isn’t as bad as it looks. There was plenty of space on the port side and towards the bow on this trip (boat had less than 30 people I think). I personally prefer the stern because of the direction of the current. However, up towards the middle/front is where you’ll find the real regulars who catch big snappers. I’m not at their level 😂
FishOn!!!

@@stevecooper8121 I was lucky on the trip and kids said they liked triggerfish over mangrove snappers, lol. Of course they prefer something that’s harder to catch for me. Tight lines!
Most people know to stay off that boat. It's always been garbage. You did well but that horrible for 60 man crew and 8hrs. Oh well
Yup, party boat fishing is not for everyone and that’s one of the things I try to highlight. Try to set expectations so people know that they may or may not get lucky and that often times, it’ll be elbow to elbow. I personally grew to love fishing from party boats in general for convenience and value. $100 nominal fee for 9 hrs of fishing from air conditioned boat is hard to beat. Definitely not for everyone though. Tight lines!
@theanglercrew7059 I agree with you about most boats. Up here in jacksonville we're lucky we had 2 of the better day boats in Florida, the Mayport Princess and the King Neptune. They were some of the best producers ever for daily boats. The Orlando Princess and Canaveral are known to be lack luster overall. You did your thing cause you're a fisherman but that boat should have an 80% limit in that boat. Then again that boat is known to stay away cause of this reason. I'm glad you did well and being an actual fisherman helps when the capt is lazy or not skilled.
@@mychaelmitchell4632 Ooh, very nice! I’ll add Mayport Princess and King Neptune to my list of party fishing boats to try out! Ty!
@theanglercrew7059 king Neptune isn't running any more. The Princess is still running.
@theanglercrew7059 Destin Florida has 2 of the best boats as well! I'd go there while the snapper are still in season. Great boats
Went on the june18th and once we fished at the first drop for 20 minutes had to leave because of medical emergency on boat. 2nd time on the op. One guy at sunrise tackle sure brags about ocean obsession as if he gets a kickback lol. I may try them next time but the days they go out doesn't fall within my vacation time this year.
@@hotpolymer IMO, fishing’s similar between the two boats and I am also looking for the right opportunity to get on Double O. Tight lines!
Well at least you got your fish I find it hard to believe I fishery that's closed all year long that there was one day to catch fish and the captain couldn't find any fish they're supposed to have the spots instead he sat there fishing with those little tiny boats are you kidding me a big boat like that it was very dismal
@@fishydubsfishing6516 Yup, I agree. It was disappointing for a lot of folks on the trip and I know that captain tried. We moved around a lot looking for red snappers, which also cut into fishing time. It was a case of bad luck.
I was standing next to you on your left. Next time I'll bring some pin fish.
I’d say that pinfish is a hit or a miss. I like to try whatever I have and rotate until something bites. Most of the red snappers were caught on frozen sardines. I don’t like using frozen sardines because it gets destroyed quickly by everything. Sometimes I take live shrimp if the baitshop doesn’t have pinfish that day. Tight lines!
We must have just missed each other bubbaloo. I was on that boat on the night run I got lucky. I caught the biggest red snapper of my life and biggest on the boat at the last drop and most of us got skunked lol. 17 and half pounds and over 34 inches got 10lbs 12oz of meat from the fillets. I’ll see if I can post the picture my son took
@@ronmckinney4334 I can’t imagine what the fight must’ve been like. I was struggling with a lot smaller red snapper! Congrats on your PB!!
What about AJ?
@theanglercrew7059 definitely a struggle. I was even using 80lb main line. The crew handed out 130lb leader and 16oz lead I had my penn squall II 60 high speed 33lb drag maxed out and it still pulled drag. These are super strong fish 🐟 and best fighters pound per pound for sure.
Have you ever tried thredfin herring ? Have had good success with them, especially when everyone else is using sardines and squid. Cut the head off and tail and a single hook in the tail area or a three hook rig. Caught my biggest mutton with this off Jupiter while drifting. Anyway, you do really good work with the videos always enjoyable.
@@stevecooper8121 Ty for the kind words. Doing this as a hobby and not doing it for $ (I make $0), so the quality is not even close to other dedicated fishing channels, but it’s good to know that a few folks out there enjoy my quickly edited videos! And I’ll take a mental note on the threadfin when I come across them!
I think red snappers eat anything, definitely not as picky as mangrove or mutton snappers
Great vid! Is braid with mono 20 to 30' mono topshot allowed there? Can you use double snell rig? How many set ups can you bring? Thanks!
Ty! If it’s your personal gear, you are allowed to fish lighter line, because there’s no hard rule. It should be fine as long as you have mono topshot. Regulars might get a little upset if you keep breaking off and shutting down the bite though lol. They’ll allow you to fish double snell rigs. You can bring as many setups as you want, but you can only have one rod at a time in the rod holder. You have to keep the other rods out of the way. I usually keep mine on the second deck and I’ve seen people store it inside/stern area. You just have to keep swapping it out one for one, so that’s the cost of bringing multiple rods. Tight lines!
@@theanglercrew7059 thanks for great info! 1ARS for 1 day seems absurd to me just my opinon tho. Keep the vids coming and please come to west coast as well!
@@ShinkiZer0 Yup, 1 day season is ridiculous for sure and it’s what it is. We just have to hope that they know what they are doing. West coast tuna is definitely on my fishing list!

I've been on that boat. Nice boat and crew. All I caught was sharks as well. I and about every other fisherman believe we have shark problems. Makes for a frustrating day. And probably the best spot on the boat is up by the captain, that's were the transducer is at, just sayin

I don’t think y’all bottomfished much in the video. Did y’all choose to top water fish specifically, or was that charter’s call?
@@pathua7692 That was the captain’s call 100%. We tried jigging here and there and dropped butterflied blue runner down for a half hour, but it wasn’t good.
