We talk money and whether or not it makes sence to restore your vintage drum set. There's a lot of drum sets out there that need restoration. So ask yourself, am I saving money in the long run or just the short run because it can get expensive.

where is the playing part?
That is a great pedal!
Right on i’m glad you agree
I have two pair!
Of the Ringo Bongos?
My Ringo Ludwig bongos!😮
They’re so cool right? I was so happy when i got them working. Obviously they’re far from original but you have to make due and get creative sometimes
I have an aluminum Standard, and I had to slighly widen to lug hole spacing to switch to bowtie lugs.
Really, that’s interesting. That’s the first time I’ve heard that. I’ll have to for sure remember that
I gigged with my Ludwig rockers 2. 11 piece kit, huge toms, huge kicks. You don't realize just how good of a packer you become after the first gig. You'll learn quickly. 11 piece kit in a Malibu Max, done. 😅 Only downfall I have is outside gigs. Depending on the humidity, it'll hold its tone. If it's too humid outside, I'll have to retune every few songs. They are very moisture sensitive. I also learned that conditioning your kit before outside gigs works well too. Example: I have a outside gig tomorrow, it'll be muggy. So I'll go to my practice room and start turning the dehumidifier down. This way it'll be moist before your gig. Then it'll hold the tone better. I've seen glue peel apart from the plys on humid days. No fun. But nobody can argue: older Ludwig was the definition of sound. Newer kits don't have that massive feel anymore.
That’s so interesting, where do you live if you don’t mind me asking? I’ve had that issue with my transition badge kit. Where the floor tom 16x16 and the bass drum completely detune on really hot days. So i have to make sure i keep that in mind if im gigging it during the summer
Got a WFL pedal and made a review of the New speed king pedal (you can check it out on my UA-cam), but it is not for me. The feel is very different and somewhat more strenuous to play. All my heroes played a Speed King so I was curious to try it my self and came to the conclusion that it's not my pedal. Very informative video, thanks.
Thank you for the comment. I totally get how that pedal might not be for everyone. But i dig that you actually did the research. I’ll make sure to check your channel out.
Lol, I just posted a comment about the gate, and 10 seconds later, you mentioned it! 😂 great video bud! 🥁🥁🥁
@@williamfotiou7577 thank you 🙏🏽
I've been playing speed kings since 1976. I've had 3, now I'm down to 1. Still one of the best pedals out there. Thanks for a great video, bud!
I agree, its durable and super easy to play!!!
This pedal makes me play differently, in a good way. Thank you for doing this video.
I agree with you. I feel like i can do more with that pedal over my DW
Hello bud. You just made me very happy. I have a 1968 Jazz Fest, which looks like it had been repainted inside. The other thing that always bothered me was that, the butt plate straddles the inside seam, word is that Ludwig wouldn’t allow anything straddle the seam. Although I do not have a stamped date inside, the badge is definitely a 1968 (serial number). The strainer is a p83, strainer, badge and muffler are next to each other. The snare side hoop has the rounded snare gate (thank you for that info). The other thing that made me think something was off, is that, the silver sparkle wrap is inside the plys. By 1968, or so they say, the wrap was not put between the ply’s. So….thanks for the snare gate info, proving that my snare may be legit, after all. 🥁🥁🥁oh, my snare is between 5 and 5.5, that was good info too.
Hey thanks for taking the time to leave a message. I’m glad some of the information was relevant and that it gave you a bit of clarity. 1969 is where i thought ludwig stopped the wrap between ply method. But in the end know one knows for sure. That’s what makes the detective work fun. If you have any recommendations for future videos im open to it.
Hey hello I have to disagree that they stopped making the 14x5.5 in 1960. I have a 1965 in silver sparkle 14x 5.5 Check the dimension of yours, unless it’s a the camera angle etc, yours looks like a 5.5 to me. Interesting channel, thank you, subscribed
@@jarrahdrum hey thanks for the feedback, yes my snare is the oddball sized one. It’s closer to 5 1/4. But good looking out, i appreciate the feedback

Absolutely, thanks for commenting
Beautiful!! Ive always loved tube lugs with the clips it just has such a cool look, how do you find the strainer? I have a set I didn’t have great luck with it the tension was weird couldn’t get it right probably have to mess with it again anyway great job
Thanks for the kind words. I hd issues with it as well. Dunnett had a 2 minute video on how to properly tie chords on to the strainer. That made a world of difference for me. I could not get enough tension on it as well when i first put it on. I highly recommend you watch that UA-cam video.
You’re right! They’re yours. Do what you want 🔥
Spoken like a tue boss! Gracias
Is this still for sale? If so, do you do shipping?
Hey, yes i still do have it for sale. You can message me on instagram At suavecito vintage drums and we can start a conversation there. 🙏🏽

Thank you very much

Awesome Jose, nice job. I don't care what people think of what I do with my drums. I wouldn't customize a great specimen of any great or rare drum drum, but to me, beat up Ludwig snare drums of which millions were built, I just don't care. I say fix them up anyway you like, and beat those great bad boys. I have a mint mahogany Pioneer, as original as possible, but my 2 Supra's look pretty bad, I use them as they are, just for the sound. Thanks again, I especially like the blue on your Supra.
Thanks for the response. People are so afraid to play let alone customize a vintage drum. I want a drum that i can use and will fit a need. Especially drums as common as pioneers, acrolite and supras like you mentioned.
🤘🏽
Nice work. Based on the grey interior and the brass grommet in the badge I'd put that drum right in 1958 She's a beauty
Cool thank you for the info, when were brass grommets used, and when were they swapped
Jose, another great video. Very very cool vintage quality piece right there. I am really happy that you played it. I understand that the sound from the drum won't be super accurately represented, but that's totally fine with me because it's nice just to get a little idea of the sound, so that was great! I didn't even need to be played that long, but no I have a good idea what it would sound like, so thanks. It sounds great by the way. Of course I may be biased being a huge Rogers fan. Happy that I subscribed and get your videos.
Right on, thanks again for the great feedback. What’s your favorite rogers that you own?
I had one of these in brown / black duco. I liked it for playing brushes, but it just didn't cut it for louder situations. The shell is really nice, but the hardware is what let's it down. I'd say with better hoops, you'd get better tension on the head, because these snares sound almost like toms, even when cranked up high, or at least my one did.
My snare sounds great, I had it for quite a while and I ignored it because I thought it was going to be everything you described. But it holds it's tune well and I can tune it up to a Middle high pitch which is good enough for me. I do agree with you in that I do use it for smaller more intimate settings.
Cool color!

Jose, I am a subscriber, and I think your videos are great. What amazed me about this, is the cost you've put in, and the dedication. I never added $ up as you went along, I thought you said you would tell us at the end. I would love to know that number. I don't have the deep enough pockets to do what you did, and although yours are valuable vintage Ludwig shells, I refurbished a '88 Rockers set, but it was 100% complete, including all original mint condition heads, of which I am saving. Running mixed used heads on them right now, but they have become my favorite drums for taking out gigging. When I bought them ( complete set with no seat, cymbals, or cases, or stands), the owner wanted $250 for them! I was shocked when he told me I was the 3rd person to see them, and the first 2 wouldn't go over $200. I gladly gave him the money, and because they were so complete, my total investment including the new wrap totals $415. I cannot send a photo, but I have photos I could email if someone wanted to see them. I have posted them often on Ludwig Drum Collectors on FBook. Thank you for such a great video!
Hey brother, thanks again for the comments. To answer your first question, the total spent is at minute 11:07. I dig the rocker kits, they’re continuously looked over but i’m pretty sure that people will eventually come around to them. There’s no better feeling than taking something and bringing it back to life. What facebook page did you post it on. I’d love to check them out. What sizes are they and what kind of wrap did you out on? Anyhow brother stay in touch
Really beautiful job you did. They remind me of my Rockers I restored. I think it's worth the cost to have a vintage sound.
Thank you, I really dig the kit as well. I just wanted to make sure people understand what it really costs to take a project like that on
It's good that you saved those shells. You would surely get a good chunk of your investment back out of it if you do decide to sell in the future, but you got a really nice kit anyway.
Thanks, I want to add a 20x14 and a 14x14 floor tom. My vision is to have a shell bank so that i can pick and choose any combination for specific gigs
@@vazquez808that's a great idea. 👍
4 minutes to not hear a drum!
People need to realize that the sound you get after it’s been compressed to all hell by UA-cam and then compressed again by what ever format you are using the sound is far from accurate. Therefore i don’t usually play them on line.
70s & 80s is still vintage
Absolutely, but i am more familiar with pre 70s and the majority of all my drums are 70s as well
I just picked up a snare defintely made by the same company as yours. Almost the same but mine has S style hoops. Haven’t found one with a sticker brand, but I can tell mine has the remnants of a flag shaped sticker. Anywho, I just took apart and cleaned up mine, would love to do a bearing edge thing but I ain’t quite that skilled yet🤠
Very cool, what do you think of it so far? I hadn’t used a router before either. Until the day i decided to do my own edges. I bought a used router on Craigslist and some router bits at harbor freight. I practiced on some scrap wood then just went for it. I cut a little bit at a time until i get the desired angles. You’ll get there!
Beautiful drum! Glad you snagged it! I'm really enjoying my oddball 6-lug version -- strange little beast that it is. So glad to have found your channel! A channel devoted to drum tech is a great idea... I'll be spending a little time here! Cheers!
Right on brother, thanks a lot. I dig your channel as well. I just watched your latest video earlier today.
Jose, I love this. Such a great video again. Thank you. I do have a question though, can't it be cleaned and still keep it's coolness? That would be another cool video to see. Also, hearing it would be nice too. Thanks
I like to remove the verdigree of the chrome/nickel. I personally like it to look like it's been well played. But if I'm restoring the drum for someone else I can make them look as close to brand new as possible. thanks again for all the support brother. Lastly I restored that snare about 4-5 years ago.
Those snare gates are fragile and are usually bent. Nice drum. I usually replace the butt plate screws with stainless steel. Little stronger and they look good with the nickel when you polish them. Also you can use 15” wires if you drill a hole in the center of one end.
If you want to get the nickel to shine again, Happich Simichrome is the way to go. Since we are in California and can no longer get that shipped to us, Flitz is a close second. Been enjoying your channel. I have a couple of vintage Ludwig kits, a WFL that I restored, and a couple of vintage Tama kits. I gig all of them regularly.
Right on brother, thank you for the advice, I’ll pick some up. I’m a huge fan of anything ludwig, wfl and leedy/ludwig prior to 64
I just got a Leedy Ludwig 15” parade drum a couple of weeks ago. Came with an LM402 that was almost unrecognizable. Both turned out great!
I like how you did the over spray with the piece of cardboard....I have tried to do the two tone by spraying the center color after the base coat....it didn't come out like I wanted so doing it again and I'm going to try your method. I really like your videos ....makes me think you are also a car guy that wants to make a driver not a show car...love it.
Thank you and absolutely! I’m a huge fan of vintage cars and bikes and don’t want a trailer princess. It has to be something i can drive or ride
@@vazquez808 I knew you had to also be a "gearhead" when I saw you putting the small screws and stuff in the round magnetic parts holder.... just what I use for projects like this and in the garage... love it.... keep the drum projects coming....
Great work on your restoration project. One thing I do when putting the lugs back on is wrap the spring with a strip of felt. You can really hear the difference. Slingerland back in the old days used to do this out of the factory.
Right on, i started using these little makeup remover pads that my girlfriend uses. They work great and a large sleeve of them are only .99 Thanks for watching, I really appreciate it
I loved my Holiday snare.....Only sold it to buy 2 COB Powertone snares....27 snare drums at one point....Scaled down to 3 in my old age.....
Thanks for the comment, you really paired down. I try really hard to play all my snares so i can justify keeping them. I think I’m up to 15 snares. What 3 snares did you end up keeping?

Beautiful Work Jose! I have no intention to restore a drum but I find your videos satisfying to watch. I love seeing people work with their hands and more than that, I love watching people work on things they love. Keep up the good work hermano! The channel is looking great!
Homie, thank you for the advice and guiding me through this, between you and your brother juan helping me out
Quick tip for ya; to solve the little problem with the lug holes, google ''harbor freight t-handle reamer'' For $3.50, it's a tool I use on almost every rewrap.....they also have step drill bits, intended for metal, but they're cheap and dull quickly on steel, but on wood will last for years. After installing the wrap, drill the holes from inside with a smaller, regular bit, then switch to the step bit and finish the hole from the outside. Results in a perfectly clean hole......I commented on your first vid, maybe the first comment. Have watched all of'em in the last couple days. You're off to a great start, Keep'em coming!
I have a harbor freight close to my home, I’ll pick them up. Thanks again for the recommendations brother!
I purchased the drill bits, and i’m waiting on the reamer that i got from amazon
Very nice restoration job...they look great...I like the color

How awesome are you? .............100%!!!!!!!
Thanks brother
funny story as a child I use to sit inside of my dads bass drum while he played. later in life when I was 6/7 I thought it was cool that my dad had our last name on his drum set.I later learned that Rogers was just the brand and not there because of him. we lost the kit in a house fire in my teen years but have always wanted one. I own a Tama set and am now 48. someday lol but the finish on that snare brings back fond memories.
You just made my day with that story. Thank you for sharing it with me and this channel. Thank you so much!
I gig my ‘57 WFLs that I restored regularly. Getting ready to gig a set of orphan ‘60s and ‘70s Ludwigs tonight for the first time. Three different finishes, but I think they look cool together. Aged WMP rack, black oyster kick and chrome over Vistalite floor tom.
Right on, i put together a 12,13,16,18,22 mid 60’s and i wrapped it in purple sparkle. Although i’ve been wanting to put together a jellybean set.
@@vazquez808 I may end up rewrapping the floor and rack to match the kick, but we’re rocking it as is tonight! First gig with them tonight!
Very very true!!!! Especially about the old snare drum stands! I definitely use a newer snare drum stand with my 1960s... Rogers kit. Rock solid analysis 👍
Thanks a alot!!!
