Steamer Sunday run with the Lionel LionMaster Big Boy #4004!
As promised, here’s the full cut of my first outdoor setup!
Given we had a deck build in progress, I saw an opportunity to have some Fastrack fun!
Here is my Lionel LionMaster Big Boy #4004 hauling an auxiliary water tender and my Super Chief consist For the UP purists out there - I apologize! My UP consist is packed up and inaccessible for the time being. But this still looks and sounds GREAT, and I loved capturing as many angles of the action as possible.
Something really interesting happened while I was shooting this. I noticed my Big Boy started to stutter a bit around certain sections of the track. I initially thought this was dirty track…but investigating the dirty track theory produced a single, fine thread metric screw. Thankfully, I recognized this screw as being a truck attachment screw, turned over the big boy and found the forward truck missing its screw! Replacing the screw resolved the issue.
Beyond that, the other fun challenge was just setting up the track! Believe it or not, that whole loop only use led two power inputs…and given this was Bluetooth controlled I didn’t know the difference. The floor joists are 12” on center, and beyond one area of curve this worked out just fine.

Really enjoyed making this one! This Lionel Legacy Atlantic has whistle steam, and I’ve found that the smoke fluid I was using seems to cause the whistle steam to degrade over time. Using the JT Mega Steam Eliminator, I was able to get a couple drops in to the whistle steam generator and that really woke up the whistle steam! This Legacy New Haven C-liner is really nice! This is one of Lionel’s purchased molds/tooling from MTH, and it was really interesting to see this model in my hands. Same thing happened to my LC+ 2.0 Big Boy #4012, only it was the rear set of wheels. Unfortunately, I found out after picking up the model. So I had to find the screw, place a tiny piece of painters tape over the small hole for the transmission piece that goes from the motor to the gearing, carefully place the piece back onto the motor shaft, lubricate the area around the tape, and reattach the wheel set.
yikes ! slow them trains down !
I did eventually! It was a lot of fun to run them at a high speed :).

I'm performing an upgrade to a friend's MTH Amtrak P42 #180. The real #180 still uses a mechanical bell instead of an E-Bell. I have two questions. - Did you have to load the chain file separate? I know on steam you have to, can't remember if you have to on diesels. - What was the product number for the sound file you used?
I think I used the chain and sound files for the PS3 version, either #830 or #831 to get all the features working :).

You're like me; "Planes-n-Trains!" ☺I like that hand held MTH remote with the scale MPH. I wish Lionel would come out with a unit like that. I DO NOT like the idea of using my CELL PHONE to operate my Legacy Locomotives..."Suppose I get a call or text". I'm jumping into O-Scale. I've got a LOT on preorder right now. Look forward to the Home Body entertainment. 👍🏼
Oh wow yeah…I’m still working on getting the layout to a place where you don’t see everything! Also moving/selling most of what’s on that wall for sheet rock and train display :). And as for the tread mill…not bad for something to see/do while getting fit!

Great upgrade - did you do a full PS3 conversion, or did you simply do a PS2/3 stacker board upgrade?
The PS2 system failed in such a way I needed to replace nearly all the LEDs; attempting to use the old ones was causing the LEDs to shut down, and it wasn’t until I disconnected all the old lighting I got the LEDs to work. This was a full strip down and rebuild with the PS3 upgrade kit. I also took the opportunity to clean and re-grease the trucks.
They really are two beautiful sets! My favorite is the Amtrak set. 👍

Atlas tracks are the best in my option. I will be using my Atlas tracks very shortly. I have to tear down the old layout first, then I can rebuild it around the room. The layout is looking great Chris. I really love the Amtrak set.

Excellent. That is a great consist and perfect for Memorial Day, especially for those of us who had parents and relatives who served in WWII. I like the fact the the second set of drivers on the LionMaster Big Boy rotate, It makes the locomotive look much better going around curves. I've mentioned this on Dadified and a couple of other channels. They should allow that on the big, scale Legacy articulated engines, so they don't look totally goofy going around even O72 curves. Maybe be able to lock out the swivel on the second set, if you don't want to use it. Once again, a fine video. Have a great and reflective Memorial Day.
What’s the difference between lion master and legacy?
Legacy and LionMaster are two different sets of features; Legacy for control systems, LionMaster being the model line of semi-scale locomotives which are slightly smaller, and designed for smaller layouts. My temporary layout had O-31 and O-36 curves and so LionMaster models were my best option.

I completely agree! I'm going to try to get the newer, plated cars on the layout and get the raw footage for editing today. If you like these cars, those are really gorgeous and I'm confident you'll love those!
What size curves will the passenger cars run?
These are the RailKing versions and will run on O-31 curves :).

Nice set! I miss running my trains on the floor. I had my couch on risers so my train could go under it.
I feel the same way. I’m planning a layout at some point and truth be told I’m already seeing it’s not going to be the same. The windows and natural background really make these videos special to me due to differences in lighting, weather, etc. which result in a more authentic experience for me.
