Seven-hour journey behind an 1954 EMD G8 locomotive. From Guantanamo to Holguin in Cuba.
Join me on a calm and relaxing journey on the local train from Guantanamo to Holguin in Cuba.
This train only runs during the summer and in 2023 it was operated with a G8 locomotive from 1954 and former German "Silberling" coaches.
Along the way, vendors continuously appear, selling everything from refresco (soda) and chupa-chupa (lollipops) to cookies and cigarettes.
The train also includes a guarded express freight car transporting everything from chickens to motorcycles, furniture, and various agricultural products.
The first part of the railway line from Guantanamo to Holguin is a branch line that runs through partly hilly terrain with some large bridges.
We pass by some once-important stations where there were large sugar mills. These sugar mills, like many others in Cuba, were closed down in the early 2000s.
At San Luis Combinado, we meet the double-track main line between Santiago de Cuba and Havana, and we follow this to Cacocum station.
Here, a short branch line leads north to Holguin.

1860's passengers would be amazed at the smooth and quiet ride on modern track i expect!
Grew up with railway books where of course all the pictures of older trains were illustrations or early black and white photos, Caroline would be 30 years old by the time of the 1st silent films, to see such a thing in 4k Video is almost mind blowing.

Både kult og artig å se gamle dampen.Litt rart å tenke på at min far kjørte damplokomotiv i sin ungdom.Han kjørte også noe han kalte for dovregubben.Han hadde noen historier å fortelle meg om den tiden.Kult😊

Great video with Mz locomotive and great engine sound. It's also very interesting to watch the traditional signal and interlocking system in operation.
Steam locomotives have very few perishable parts and will last forever providing they are well oiled.
Først og fremst, det er flott at dette blir dokumentert - og glimrende gjort! Samtidig er nedbygginga av infrastruktur et uomtvistelig tap. Sammen med oppsplittingen av all drift, går felles sikkerhetskultur og resiliens ved driftsforstyrrelser også tapt. Ikke at det er økt risiko, men tidsbruken øker når mange parter (foretak) må involveres. Denne «effektiviteten» er selvsagt synlig på et regneark, men brukerne - og trolig personalet? - er ganske frakoblet i «lønnsomheten». Så var det sagaen om veteran-materiell og ERTMS, da. Kanskje Hamar-museet finner en «rik onkel» til å rigge om noen lok, slik at ikke det fantastiske arbeidet ender som en statisk utstilling? Uff, jeg er vel litt negativ, det ligger litt i tida vi er i. Grunnen er at jeg setter enorm pris på dere som gir alt for å ivareta vår jernbane-historie…! 👍

Flott video. Teknologisk føles dette som noe som er fra 50-tallet (noe det også kanskje er), men det er mange innebyggede sikkerhetsmekanismer - selv om de er mekaniske / "analoge". Nå som ERTMS kan bli utsatt (bombe) må TXP trolig fortsette slik en stund til. Bane NORs MZ var trekkraft på CargoNets tog siden det var omkjøring?

Yes they have made a double track concrete bridge and line for 200 km/h. This is a part of the Dovre line, between Oslo Airport and Hamar.
