COMPLETE Rebuild Of My EJ257 Engine & Turbo For My $3,650 2015 STI!
I built my EJ257 and IHI vf48 turbo for my clean title 2015 WRX STI! I bought this STI sight unseen from a Copart auction for $3,650. I thought it would be a killer deal since it had a new OEM short block with only 8,000 miles on it! But when we got it running it had a rod knock... So we pulled and tore down the engine! And finally, I got all the new parts needed to rebuild it! And the turbo had so much shaft play I'm surprised it was still working. So I rebuilt that too!

      If you can find a stock one that will be your best bet! The more that's stock the better off you'll be :) That being said no car can survive a lack of maintenance stock or modified so maintenance records are king! Carfax will show all maintenance records if they performed at a reputable shop too :)

    In an STI, it's no surprise given the people who buy them, but anyone owning any EJ/FA/VB engines can find that their car will last just as long as any other, if you stay on top of the regular maintenance. Especially oil. Subaru's manual itself literally tells you to top off oil every 1000 miles in some models. People just ignore the laws of physics when they own a boxer and just assume they can treat it like a Honda. Spoiler alert: You can't. It's not a Honda. They're different things. P.S. EJ and VA engine setups are the same: Removing the battery is/can be helpful, but just unhooking the air pump from it's plastic funnel (that goes over the spark plugs and coil packs) and just lifting the funnel up (It's held in place by a singular bolt and is only attached to a tube on the other end) will completely unveil that side of the engine. At that point all you need is a swivel socket for both sides.

    • @ShawnzeyRacing
      @ShawnzeyRacing 5 днів тому

      Completely agree! These EJ engines are in everything. So why is it that WRX and STI are breaking all the time? It's the owners lol. And yea the secondary air pump is really easy to remove I learned that pulling the engine! So next spark plugs change will be super easy :) Thanks for commenting!

    Hey there subaru bro and the others which are following your build! I have a good 35+ year's worth of building for most people that would leave a few 'HPs' on the table for a very long life and want it to go out past the distance to the moon and back into the driveway where the bodies are falling apart from the rusting and then say they must not forget about getting it fully undercoating in which the polarized climate for the political world will have a good hissy for any drips that hits the ground! Buh Suckered the huggers again. I have been using the 50 state legal to find it just about everywhere and it is used by people who are in highly protected areas of the parks in most closed areas where they may have a fit for a few drips in this area's polan bar and chain lube and with a little bit of heat from a old fridaddy to get it to a reasonable thiner consistency and then spray it on a somewhat cooler car after you have washed the underneath very carefully and then it really needs to be dry.but the warm bar lube and a cool car in the 50s area and the oil cools and it literally will just stick to anything that is cold and it sets up instantly with no real odors except for a bit of light smoke from the exhaust system heat! Shawn!!! When it comes to building up a new subaru engines in the open deck 2.0ejt/@2.5 variations of open deck with not having a good facing on the block and the head's and the original design 2.5 open deck sealing surface with a good several years of horrific gaskets for a very limited area of the block and head's and the NA versions were the same as the turbo versions that are a necessity in which 9 out of 10 will 80s to even less miles or kilometers have to get it done again. There can only be one! The jdm version of this early turbo 1.8 soccer and the NA 2.2 16 valve in most impreza varieties and the legacies of the latest one built with service of the improved 2. 2 with a good amount of revision in the intake and the head's and a few other components to get a little more power and torque to the 99models of legacies and a few of the early legacy outback that are now very few available! However it is not All doom and gloom and the jdm Built for the first year of subaru legacy ss to go to the trial of running the legacy that the Japan model was a good ejt2.0 closed deck for stability of the cylinders and it was developed by the factory STI TEAM AND PRODRIVE to build a good closed deck engine with a top mount intercooler that they had thrown out the rules and built it with their existing performance products to make a very reliable setup and it literally was a good little flat boxer that was surprisingly good and really quick of the very early 90s! But again the factory likes to please the customers and they did listen for a very nice early edition wrx that was not available for the US market and it literally didn't get rid of all of the performance of the US Customer base and they ended up building a great car flat was turbocharged for the US MARKET and the New version of the 89 legacy had a pretty good Big brother and we did get it in the states that was a very capable car called the legacy ss turbo and it literally was available with a custom and highly modified hi knickel block and shared some of the latest engine toys and tricks from the race version of the 2.0ejt however the US marketing version car's has a (Hot) IH36 FOR A AUTO TRANS AND THE MANUAL Has a slightly bigger version of the highly modified version of a incredibly popular and very useful 2.2ejt without any internal problems that plagued the 2.0/2.5T. But the fact of lower boost levels and no intercooler and it required the minimum octane of 91 but if you want a few more hps and a little more safe thevhot air turbo boosted the best for torque in this class and sixe that it was a little bit under rated and it literally was making a good amount of torque and it literally was just about a flat line of 180ftlbs that was available for the entire rev range and it was a good built for the same understatement that was making a reasonable 200 hp and it was a very quick and very understated car that was a good performer. Anyways here is the best secret that is very very important for you to actually build a good subaru engines and it literally is slightly overlooked and it literally is just cleanliness for the entire build and you should seriously need a good little bit of clean and dust free and you should be just alone and remember to take the time to do all of the required checks and step by step and please take a moment and clean up everything from your last step and keep your mind moving forward and be careful about reaching a goal at certain times and intervals soon you'll have a good engine that you have done it! But again this particular engine and it has the ability of taking a massive amount of abuse and it literally is extremely easy to take a great deal of abuse and it literally will take a long while and it will be a rocket . Billy good luck 😮

      @ShawnzeyRacing the engineer symbol is a three tier castle as in world War 2 they needed a way of marking engineers on the battle maps. E on its side is a three tier castle. Juan is one of the guys I served with ans happened across this video and was like Briannnnnn. So saying goes "engineers up" we go fix the problems

    Foot note upon further viewing of your work Even with a new Belt tensioner Bleeding is recommended to rule out the possibility of air in it due to its position and time in storage after 🙂manufacturing

    Hope that you get oil pressure after a few revs of crank before start up .Should be monitored with an oil pressure gauge .Would have recommended that you removed the oil pump plate and packed the cavity with vaseline to help quick oil feed to the dry pump . Good Luck 🙂

    I belive the cam gears have to be 70 to 75 foot pounds 22 to low

    • @ShawnzeyRacing
      @ShawnzeyRacing 8 днів тому

      Yea I missed a step! 22 ft lbs is step 1 and then step 2 is another 45 degrees which ends up around 70 ft lbs :)

    Did you get that block decked? Even if it was “new,” that’s no guarantee it isn’t warped considering how poorly the previous shop did this build.

    • @ShawnzeyRacing
      @ShawnzeyRacing 8 днів тому

      Yes the machine shopped decked the heads and block while they checked the bore and cleaned everything and a whole list of things :)
