Detonation killed it. Welcome to Ej257/255 Ringland failure. Pinged enough to stress the bearing. Depending on how every thing else looks while its apart you can possibly get away with replacing just the bad piston since the mileage on the block is so low, done that a few times with success. Usually when these things start knocking its time for a new short block, oil pump, and oil cooler. Unless you want to repeat the process make sure its on a decent tune. EJ257's arent bad, people are.
Agree that EJ's are fine and the owners kill them. I have a friend pushing the stock long block pretty far with horsepower and still going strong. Decent tune and good maintenance is key to any vehicle :) Going to tear this one apart and hopefully save it but of course will replace what I need to.
I agree thanks! I think we can get this thing back on the road for pretty cheap. But so far it's been pretty hard to find red doors and a trunk used. Technically don't need to but not a fan of the speed holes in my car lol
Yeah, a new clutch & flywheel service is $2,300 parts & labor. This could become a pretty cool project car. I'd sell everything else in the garage and strip the Subie down to it's bones. Get the chassis stripped and dipped and rebuild that thang. Or just drop a used LS in it... lol
As soon as i saw the compression difference i knew bro was cooked lmao. Good luck with this one man! My guess is your supra will be the daily for a while instead of the subaru hahahaha
I think its safe to say cylinder 2 is the one with the spun bearing lol. It could be something valve train related for the low compression to but id guess spun bearing.
SUBARUS ARE EXTREMELY RELIABLE IN MY EXPERIENCE. CANT POLISH A TURD THOUGH SO PREVIOUS OWNERS BAD HABITS AND LACK OF MAINTENANCE MUST BE RULED OUT. EITHER WAY BRO, YOU CAME OUT ON TOP OF THIS INVESTMENT EITHER WAY.
I love Subarus I don't think I said anything bad about them lol Also I put green in because that's what was already in it and I was doing a quick test drive. I love all cars and I'm here to fix them not break them down :)
Subaru are known for a faulty pick up tube in the oil pan, they break off due to vibration and spin bearings, really a common fault for the boxter engine of that year. Taking turns at high speed also starve this engine of oil. When your rebuild this motor make sure to address these issues, you should be fine good luck
Have read about the oil pick up issues before and that most people recommend killer b as a replacement. You would think 10+ years later they would've fixed the issue though lol
It does have a cobb holder in the glove box so I think it did have one. Either way I have one on order. Totally agree the cold air intake is probably worse but I want to hear the blow off noises 😎
Thank god you got this, va's are such amazing cars, I've always liked them and thought they where cool AND NOW I HAVE MINE, i love my fa20, live in Canada, undercoated it, and already plan to paint correct any blemishes as its my daily and im the second owner, the condition of this car shocks me, hope you have fun saving it
We're gonna save it for sure! Haven't decided how I'm going to tackle the rust yet but I don't think I can leave it alone lol. Very excited to own this thing :)
Fastest way to fix would be a new shortblock and clean all the oil passages in the heads bypass the oil cooler until it gets broken in or you will be doing it again
@ShawnzeyRacing id replace the crankshaft if it knocking the crank journal is gonna be messed up , just tryin to prevent you from having a failure after again, sucks to have to pull an engine out multiple times
Lolol, I just screamed nooooo when I heard the rod knock. I'm not sure about that engine, but if you only have to replace the rod bearing, it's not horrible. Again, I have no idea about this engine, lol. Good luck, bro!
What completely changed how I approach working on subarus is unbolting the two bottom motor mounts, and the one top dog-bone mount. This completely released the motor and transmission. Than I take a jack & lift the motor 2 inches up with a block of wood. This allows you to easily move the motor 4 inches either left or right, making a tedious job into an easy job. The time it takes is maybe 5 minutes to unbolt the mounts, less if you use power tools.
Something to definitely try! It would be really easy if you switched to a front mount intercooler too to get to the pitch stop with out taking anything apart! Thanks for the suggestion :)
I got you beat I bought a 2015 WXR with a hydraulic-motor for $4000. Absolutely no rust on the car at all. And I found a replacement brand new engine for two grand
i bought a 13 si in august, spun cyl 4 rod bearing shortly after. Rebuit the motor and then blew my steering rack seals 2nd startup lmfao. I pray for good subaru days in your future!!!
I was sittiing as the same boat as you, if i could go back and think about ALL the costs, if you want an engine swap done do it. I promise it will be cheaper than building a built subie LOL,
Yea if I decide to do a built engine I may go with IAG. But also you gotta think about the fun factor too! If you enjoyed building the engine maybe it was worth it!
ive never seen rust like that. maybe on the bottom of the door, because the drains get clogged and people dont clean them. but never that high up on the doors.
yea its kind of crazy how bad the rust is on this thing... Kind of disappointed that a 10 year old car can rust through that fast. I'm just glad its on replaceable parts besides the roof skin. It is common places for rust on these VA STI's according to the little research I've done.
Definetly replace most oil components like the oil cooler Or Even oil pan, and make sure to THOROUGHLY clean oil lines, AVCS Cam gears and oil passages as there will be copper and other metal shavings EVERYWHERE, replace the spun rod and crankshaft, and resurface both block and heads, apply loctite on the back bolts of the oil pump and you should have a RELIABLE Subaru after remapping the ECU properly after the rebuild. (specially if you plan on keeping that useless hot air intake that will cause heat soak and engine knock which is what kills these engines) Skip 1 of these steps and soon enough, all the work and money will have gone in vain and another rebuild will be coming up (ask me how I know)
I know it’s not what you wanna hear coz shit gets expensive real quick, but it’s how it has to be done, also make sure to buy OEM gaskets as other brands tent to leak and be shit quality
Thanks for all the advice! :) I plan on trying to make this thing run great again as I dont want to rebuild the engine every year lol. A very thorough cleaning in the future for this engine
@ShawnzeyRacing on the bottom part of the rear doors near the wheel well, is there not a silver support? My 2012, 2022, and my 2024 all have the frame support.
