  • Well this is embarrassing. This episode started nearly a year ago, and was put down. Now I have picked it back up to restore some electrical and heater functions. We also replace the old hummingbird starter with the new mini type that promises to crank the engine over way faster. Coupled with new and better battery cables, we should have a much faster spinning engine on startup!

    Epic video, dude. Long, but interesting and satisfying. Almost like a full-length nature documentary😊 I'm also a big fan of 60s-70s American land yachts --Chryslers, Lincolns, and Pontiacs (the '65 Bonneville gives me the chills!)

    That’s a Denso gear reduction starter that you installed on the car. They are absolutely the best starter ever made. When the contacts finally wear out in one, which usually takes about 150,000 miles, all you have to do is pop the three small bolts that hold the plunger in and the two contacts are under the plunger and easily replaced. After 600,000 miles on one I’ve only put three sets of contacts in mine. They’ve run those Denso starters on many Toyotas for decades as well as other vehicles. If you ever hear one just “click” when you turn the key to start it’s just the $10 contacts inside. Guaranteed. 👍for the content.

    I was inspired to do some electrical work of my own by this video. Replacing an overhead console/compass on my own car. So, yeah! 👍👍 And I've been putting it off for months, thank you for inspiring me. 😁 It definitely will be sad to see the New Yorker go. I'll always be a fan of those big land yachts. I had a chance a few years ago to buy a 1973 Coupe DeVille with 53,000 original miles on it from the original owner and I've been regretting it ever since 😫😫 Ohhh!!! Anywho....awesome video! Great work! Thank you for sharing!!

      Most welcome and don’t be sad. We will have more land yachts don’t you worry!

    Oh, and congrats on the sale. Going to a good home and electrical work can be a pain even on beasts with minimal analog stuff... never mind this new digital crap. Great explanations...

      We’ll get to General Motors someday in the future. I can only do one project at a time unfortunately. Everybody likes different things, and I will be unable to appease everybody. But glad you stopped by.😊✌🏼

    Had a 73 Monaco a liked it until I fired over some train tracks at about 50 mph and bent the subframe up! Two door beast. Brown with tan interior. She had some quarter panel rust but not to bad. That was in 1988 timeframe. That whiny Chrysler geared started. A sound all its own... fit 6 easily...

    That melted plug on the AC control system is a common problem in the Chrysler Corporation cars and trucks with the simple control system. The cars that came with the optional automatic temperature control systems had completely different control circuitry. The power switch in the simple systems for the fan circuit has inadequate contact surface area resulting in excessive heat build-up when the fan is operated on high speed. Chrysler should have used a separate relay to handle the high fan speed current to the fan motor. That would have prevented the melt-down. Replacing the switch should cure the problem for now. Be sure to clean the female contacts in the plug shell when replacing the switch. Any corrosion there will make the problem recur more qu9ckly. In some cases the contact(s) may need to be re-tensioned or even replaced.

    One and a half hours of electrical gremlins! Oh yes! My second worst thing to work on, the first being RUST! Having factory wiring helps atleast.

    • @SwedeMachine
      @SwedeMachine  10 місяців тому +1

      Yes. Unlike the Toyota the Chrysler at least still had most wires intact😉🤣. I would rather re wire a car, than work on rust haha!

    Radio would need to be grounded to work... you plugged in positive and the speakers... the chassis bolted in would be the ground. Worth a revisit

    Out of curiosity, I saw the radio power was one wire (I could be wrong). Do those old units need to have a ground of some sort to work? Also, some of those old units have a fuse built into them. If you get the wild hare to look it over, maybe that could be a problem? Just guessing... OH, and great video Swede! Very informative and great to learn how to do diagnostic work for the younger audience members.

      Shoot I can’t remember. I shot that part of the tape almost a year ago. I know I tested it when I initially drove home with it(radio silence) 😏, so it definitely needs looked at. It could very well have internal fuses, but my guess is either the power switch got oxidized and now won’t make a connection, or the capacitors are shot. It’s not a big deal for now, the 440 makes enough sweet noise 😃🤘🏼
