"Philly/Pittsburgh is nice but other than that there's nothing to do in PA" -Uncultured People all the time.
The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania is often overshadowed by its 49 siblings, but after years of being told this I took it personally and endeavored to show off the wonders of my home. My Curiosity for the uniquely Pennsylvanian has yielded a bounty that would take me a lifetime to display.

Gruber Wagon Works: A Window to the Wheelwrights of Pennsylvania - BERKS County

Before cars owned the road, it was dominated by carts and wagons. But wheels and wagons don't just grow on trees, someone needed to make them. These people are called wheelwrights. Originally built in 1882 The Gruber Wagon Works was a wheelwright shop that serviced the Mt Pleasant area of Berks County. They would make wheels, conduct repairs, and build entire wagons for nearly 100 years, seeing...

I live in Fagleysville, and although I am not from the area, I have researched the history of where I live (history degree, can't help myself! ) Not many people know that Washington brought his troops to what is referred to as Camp Pottsgrove and used this church as a hospital, so thanks for spreading this history! The Antes house is such a peaceful spot. Cool channel...subbed.
Can't blame you for the curiosity, I do the same thing. Glad you liked the channel! If you havent heard of it yet, the Antes House hosts the Goschenhoppen Folk Festival coming up in Early August. You should check it out! goschenhoppen.org/goschenhoppen-historians-pennsylvania-german-folk-culture-special-events-programs/folk-festival/
@keystonecuriosity I have heard of it, but thanks for the reminder!
The amount of precision that it takes to make these mechanisms work is staggering. The people who do this type of work are indeed part craftsmen and part scientist. Concerning the stuffed animal hunt, I had to re-watch this video to find all seven that you included. Thanks for sharing!
I thought that was a fun inclusion to the Museum and wanted to add it in here as well. Glad you liked it!
@keystonecuriosity by the way I shared this video with my boss and found out that he's a member😮.
Exasperated and exacerbated are not the same word.
Ah, I see. Thank you, I did use the wrong one
just stumbled on your channel, quickly subscribed. Life long Philly resident, love visiting PA sites.
Theres a lot of cool stuff closer than most folks realize. Glad you enjoy it as well!
I've reloaded your video 4 times and the like button wiil not work.
huh, thats odd. Regardless I'm glad you enjoyed it
Who would've thought that there was a state park named for a pothole😂. Totally believable in Pennsylvania. Thanks for sharing!
Certainly not at all the reputation of the stateLOL
Walter Zolna just put out a video documenting this forest that I never knew about before, and now I am binging on the Cook State Forest, and lo and behold, your video pops up. Very informative and timely information! Thanks for sharing!
this one was a fun one and well worth the drive, loved learning it. Glad you liked it! There's parts i didnt get to but I hope you make your way up there with your channel
Thanks buddy ❤
I’m in New Jersey right across the river 😅
I would love to peddle there ❤
Can I ride my bike 🚴 there 😢
Please do! plenty of folks on bikes there just be mindful that not all paths are well suited for high speeds
Very poignant and unsettling. I remember seeing Jim Thorpe in his football jersey with the letter C, but I never knew what it stood for. There is so much more to Pennsylvania than meets the eye! Thanks for sharing!
It is upsetting to find it so close to home but impossible to ignore, sad history is still important history
man the level of detail you put into this and the professionalism The History Channel should pick you up!!
perhaps if they returned to the "old days" of the History Channel... I miss Modern Marvels
Your channel is too well done to only have 884 subs.
All in good time, I'm not out to please the masses but I'm glad to hear its appreciated. Thank you
Always informative and prolific Sir ✊🏼🦬
Being from PA I must say, the best thing you can see is now leaving PA in your rear view mirror
Yes that’s true
I’ve seen that bell before myself it’s really nice
WoW what a great story, you told it so well. Thank you so much im so glad i found your channel. Thank you again
Excellent videos. Thank you.
Thank you! Glad you liked them
Inspiring
Interesting history. Which trail is the covered bridge on?
Glad you thought so too, The bridge is along the Forbidden Drive north of the Valley Green Inn
Thank you!
That was very interesting altogether, but I was fascinated about Wissahickon Drive being designated by law to be unpaved. This is a beautiful looking place! Thanks for sharing!
I was amazed to find out the history of the protest and the road being permenantly car-free, even more amazed to see its still celebrated! Great place to check out for your channel my friend. Waaay more trails here than I expected.
Very well done!😀
Beautiful place
my backyard!!! ♥
For years I've had a fantasy of making a "fooler" feature length film called _The First World War_ that would open with a scene you couldn't tell the era of easily. Just before the opening credits, there'd be a bit of dialog, "What did you say your name was?" "Washington. George Washington." And then the title, accompanied by Knotwork's (Blood Axis's) music for "Wulf and Eadacre", which sounds remarkably like Morton Gould's theme to the _World War 1_ TV series. But I'm not a movie maker and I've few ideas for it other than these gimmicks.
Hahah I'd watch that! Yeah its always been amusing to me to talk about the first Real world war started in PA. Sadly underknown era of American history that i find fascinating. If its something you have interest in I'd suggest looking up "The War that Made America" made by Pittsburgh WQED. I used some clips for my video and watched the series in entirety.
Your dog is quite cute. Oddly, i just saw a twin to yours on petfinder, except that one lost its' left eye!
That's Cooper! Hes been my friend and travel buddy for 10yrs now
Great video. It's sad that towns had to suffer from those who were ignorant and a tragedy that improved the structures. Did you know that once the Lehigh River was owned a company, no other river had owned rights before.
I was just starting to ponder deeply about what an "old growth forest" could be when you ceremoniously asked the question, and I said "goody"!
Hey great minds think alike. While researching I was wondering the same thing and figured others would as well.
Old growth👍. If you haven't been to the Hammersely Wild Area and the F H Dutlinger old gowth forest hike, I highly suggest it. Close to Cherry Springs S.P.
I havent heard of those places yet, I'll have to look into them. Thanks for the suggestion!
@keystonecuriosity I've heard that 2 logging companies boundaries were in the area, and they left a buffer between themselves so as not to cut the others' trees.
I've driven past the Bucks county park off of rt611 for years but have never stopped. I will make it a point to do so now. Thank you
Great video! My parents rented a house with a barn and found a horse-drawn covered wagon. My father ordered the canvas covering from Sears, and we kids loved playing in it. When we moved, we begged our parents to bring it with us. They said, how do you tow a covered wagon on the highway?
With a horse of course!
This will go on my bucket list. I need a nice place to stay.
Interesting. Cook's Forrest, wonderland. . .also there is a publicly accessible [true] wilderness not far from there.
The Allegheny Forest in general is an absolute dream for folks like myself. I could get lost in those trees and never regret it.
My grandfather's grandfather was the wheelwright of Elizabethtown, PA.
I have nothing but reverant respect for the old wheelwrights, that one attempt at making a wheel was easily the hardest bit of woodworking I've ever done.
Being Pa Dutch myself, ( can not speak it my grandfather did), also living about 1/2 to 45 minutes away ( depending on traffic on I 22/I 78). Kutztown and area its a beautiful countryside. I used to love listening to my grandfather speak Dutch and scold us in Dutch, hahaha.
I always found the old dutch phrases to be immensly amusing. Grandmom used to have to put the foot "daan" when my brothers and I would get rowdy. Thanks for watching! Glad you enjoyed it
I forget which video it was, but i thought it was interesting to find out that the Lehigh River was once owned by a company. If you can find out more information, that would be interesting. Thank you. Great video.
Hmm, That is an odd concept. I'll have to look into that. Thanks for bringing it up! Glad you liked the video
Bravo. Good work, sir.
Glad you enjoyed the video!
On May 31st, 1985 a tornado touched down in Dewert Pennsylvania
You left out one of the most important lessons of the flood. A state tax was imposed on liquor to help rebuild Johnstown. The town was rebuilt, but the tax was never removed and is still paid on liquor and wine today. 18%
Quite true.
Today I Leaned. I actually did not know that and had to do some quick looking about it. You are correct, after the 1936 Johnstown Flood they insistuted the tax to pay for the canal and river wall system. Thanks for bringing that up!
But there was still a 1977 flood
👌🏼
Well worth the wait! Love your videos!
It takes a while but I'm glad you like the end results. Thanks for watching!
We passed Johnstown on our way to Pittsburgh this past weekend, and my mother-in-law was giving us some history that she knew. This was very timely, and I also shared your video with her. Thanks for sharing!
Facinating place. I knew roughly what it was before going but it surprised me with how well put together it was. Glad you guys liked the video, hope you get the chance to visit someday!
Great work! I was just here last summer for the first time. Love this area of the state.
I could get lost in the woods of the Allegheny and never regret the choice to do so. Glad you like it Thanks for watching!
@@keystonecuriosity same here.
Pennsylvania looks better than I thought, i normally rarely go past Binghamton new york on it's northern border in new york.
Pine Creek Gorge is truly a beautiful area. Ty for bringing it to people's attention. And glad you mentioned the hardwood forests ( PA is also known as "Penn's Woods"). A sad demise for our forests was the Chestnut blight. ..the once magnificent American Chestnut trees were once a valuable asset. My father found a sapling trying to grow out of an old stump, he "rescued" it and we now have an American Chestnut tree growing in our yard.Thru care and attention it is thankfully thriving and producing delicious nuts. Thank you for sharing your video and insightful information 😊👌
History is full of sad stories which is why it is so important to learn. Glad you enjoyed it!
It's really a shame you are drawing attention to these places. I have been going here for decades there is already enough people. Cook forest doesn't need more people or this video to shown it off.
I'm curious what makes a man think to hold the beauty of the world to a select few.
You mean like the Sierra Club?
@@Scott-zm8ei Or like the South Fork Fishing and Hunting Club.
God didn't intend for the beauty of this world to shared with only a few..
@@tedlieb4928 yea he did actually
If you love nature and hiking, visit Hawk Mountain Sanctuary, Kempton, Berks County. Also in Berks is the Berks Military History Museum. Ty for mentioning Gruber Wagon Works, remember seeing them relocate it to where it stands now, quite a feat..My grandparents owned many of their wagons and are still in the family. Great site, just found it, ty for sharing.
Ah, an excellant suggestion! Hawk Mountain was one of the first videos I did and the sanctuary has an amazing history. I havent heard of Berk's Military History Museum, Where is that?
@keystonecuriosity The Berks Military Museum is in Mohnton..Berks County...a great gem👌..was founded by our Senator Mark Gillen....awesome that you found Hawk Mountain...going to watch more of your videos 👍, ty
Nice video...I especially like how you snuck in the Rolling Stones logo!
Gotta make sure youre paying attention :) Glad you liked it!
