So grateful to have found you!!! Looking forward to going to “class” with you!
Very talented
Thanks Monica. Thanks for watching.
Great lesson a la Loomis. Thank you
You bet. I'm glad you liked it!
I did some drawing in the 1960s and am ready to get started again.
Better late than never. Have fun drawing and thanks for watching.
I sure had some decent instructors; you are a shiny star! I took figure drawing 1 twice because the guy gave me a B. 2nd time i got the A.
Hey thanks. See, you got better the second time you took the class. That is a win.
@@prof_nelson got less lazy more like. Thompson just wanted more effort ~ I've been a human camera since K. Light and dark shapes are what I draw. totally right-brained. I never map anything out beyond a very simple block-in.
A real pleasure to watch you teach...do you have a book?
Hey thanks. No, no book, just a UA-cam channel. We'll see about a book in the future. Thanks for watching.
So wonderful to watch, but It would have been nice to actually see a portrait of an actual person.
Yep, I'll be doing one soon. Keep an eye out for it when it drops.
You make it look so easy!!! Lol, you're going to say practice makes it easy!!! OK, I'm going to practice this!!! Baby steps, right!!! I want to paint watercolor figures on horseback!!! Is there a Loomis for horses??????
Yes, baby steps. I do make it look easy - even for a rough sketch shown in the video, but it will take practice. Don't get frustrated. Here's a good starter book for drawing horses... amzn.to/4dcjuKp This is an affiliate link to amazon. If you use it and buy anything, I will receive a small commission on the sale.
I love your video. Only one that taught me how to do this
Glad I could help. Have fun drawing figures and faces
Your vocabulary is quite “expressive” in places - but cute, old timer!
Oh, I haven't even tapped into my full library of expressive vocabulary, Dagnabit. Keeping it old school.
firstly, kudos on your success - secondly, i find this approach to drawing faces or anything, to be anti-aesthetic and anti-educational there is no level of skill or interest that would warrant this disregard of the aesthetic faculty that provides our impulse to Art.
Thanks for the comment and thanks for watching.
Love our instruction Rusty!! Thank you for sharing 🙏
Great, thanks for watching.
Great instruction and advice about how to just do it and not think you are create a masterpiece. Thank you !!
Hey thanks Mary, first rule… get out of your head. Thanks for watching.
Thank you for the downloads, I shall look at them later. One issue I had was that because the links in UA-cam tend to not be shown (ending with ...) one has to click directly, whereby the UA-cam app uses itself and the Chrome browser. The trouble with that is that some websites can annoy with java so it is switched off. The UA-cam app gives no option to use a standby browser so your site then fails to come up. I was wondering if there was a better way as it was a fiddle to get there. Edit: quickly found the answer. Don't use the UA-cam app. Start watching the video in the browser of choice from the start. UA-cam seems to be getting more and more user hostile with every app update.
Hum, I need to check all that out and see what problems I have doing it. Thanks for watching.
Thanks. That was fun. I have a bit of work to do. 😁
But it is fun work. Practice, practice.
Next time can we have the reference on screen instead of yourself please?
I sure can. I didn't like watching the top of my head either. Thanks for watching.
💕
Thanks Christy. Thanks for watching.
Thank you. That was a great explanation and you make me feel I could try this.😊
Go for it! You can do it. Thanks for watching.
great video!
Thanks! I appreciate it.
Great video!!!
Glad you liked it!
Love this...cant thank you enough for doing these. Again, it really helps put the Loomis books into an easy to understand tutorial. Awesome teaching Rusty. 😊
Taking that amount of information that is in the books, distilling it and being able to apply it is a challenge. But, keep practicing until it clicks and then the fun begins.
The white strokes made it have so much more detail!! I love this piece so much🫶
Yep, the little jewels. 🙂 Thanks for watching.
Happy to see u again ❤you are an amazing teacher. You have a happy and light character. God bless you 🫶🏼
Thank you so much! That is sweet of you to say.
I've been practicing with the reilley method lately. Would you recommend combining these two and using the loomis one to get it more structural ?
Absolutely. Use whatever method that makes sense for you. I work on the Bruce Lee philosophy of "my way is no way". Meaning, learn many ways and use what you need when you need it. The Loomis does give you a great structure to build you figures on.
Will definitely be following you.... thanks for sharing your talent .
Great, thanks for the sub and for watching. I appreciate it.
Great instructions. You make me feel that I can accomplish this with lots of practice.
Thank you. If you practice enough you will master figure drawing. Thanks for watching.
Wow! Your tutorials are the very best on UA-cam. You are simply amazing sir. 👏
Wow, thanks! That means a lot to me. Thank you.
You are getting good at this UA-camr thing! Keep it up. You are an inspiration.
Wow, I really appreciate it. This has been one of the more challenging things I have ever attempted. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. 🙂
Thank you. This is an awesome tutorial.
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching.
Good morning, Rusty. Truly need tutorials on this subject. Thank you.
OK, more are on the way. Thanks for watching.
I think these are really pretty, and the music is nice too
Most of them turned pretty good, for quick studies.
Great ❤
Great
Thanks.
Great video with Good explanation. Thanks
Thanks for watching.
Thank you!! Wow.
You bet and thanks for watching.
Basics would be extremely helpful in getting some of us off the ground. If you have the basics tools in your skill set then the more difficult things will not be so difficult. 🤞🤞
Yep, I'll do some more back to basic tutorials. Thanks for your comment and help.
Amazing paintings and very inspiring! Thank you for sharing!
My pleasure 😊
❤❤❤
Hey, thanks for the ❤s.
Well y🎊👏🏽🎊
Thanks for watching.
I am retired from a demanding profession and have used my retirement time to do something I love and always wanted to learn more about which is drawing and painting. I have taken a number of classes with other adult learners mostly via the local college adult education. I am so surprised now many other adults want to learn to paint( I love watercolor and pastel ) but don’t see the need to learn to draw first. It is like this vital link is just something they don’t want to spend the time on or they lack confidence in this important step. I see the frustration when their art does not meet their expectations. Drawing doesn’t require expensive equipment just time. I was attracted to your site because you expanded on the loomis method I was introduced within the last 2 years. I always just drew from observation. Thank you for your content and I am eager to see more.
I hope there are a lot of people interested in learning how to draw and paint. Drawing and painting are great past-times for retirees. Good for health, attitude and for activities to do. Welcome to the party. Drawing as a necessity will depend upon what type of paintings/artwork people are interested in making. If they want to do architecture, and people, yes, it is a necessity to varying degrees. Drawing is also good in teaching an artist how to observe shapes, forms and lines. Thanks for watching.
Like many others, I had your Loomis video suggested to me yesterday. I watched both of them last night. Thank you for doing those. Quite an interesting technique. I’ve always been fascinated with watercolor, and painting in general. I have a pretty good start on supplies, but I just can’t bring myself to making the first “marks”. I get anxiety, with the thought of wasting precious art supplies, with my less than desirable results. I subscribe to several other painting channels, and I’ll tell you… Your headed in the right direction. Excellent video and sound, and well thought out narrative. I’m looking forward to what’s next for you! Congratulations!
Hey, thanks for watching. Start out on the cheap stuff and build you confidence with your technique and to reduce anxiety. If you can figure out how to make it look good with the cheap supplies, switching to the good stuff will be like turning on a light. You'll see the difference. Thanks for the encouragement on how I"m doing with the tutorials. I appreciate it.

Thanks for watching!
I've been using Loomis for about 7 years. As a beginner moves through his/her practice (to gain skill, you must practice as close to everyday as possible)) you'll find that the linear guides Rusty is using will be more understood than actually on the paper. You'll visualize the lines rather than draw them. However, when my skills begin to deteriorate (which mine will do, especially if I stop practicing) I always go back to actually drawing the lines and the techniques Rusty is demonstrating in this video. Great vid, by the way. I'm subscribing.
Yep, that is right. As you practice, the "guidelines" become less visual and more of a shorthand for establishing the proportions and structure of the pose. Drawing figures is a perishable skill, you have to do it daily to stay tuned up and able to draw them with confidence. I'm currently practicing my figure drawing fundamentals in preparation for my next Loomis tutorial... coming soon.
I have a question: how do you get so much paint into the tin mixing tray? Is a certain kind of brush better for this? For me the paint seems to stay in the brush and not get on the tray in sufficient quantities
I wet down the paints in the pan or the palette to soften them up before painting. No special brush... flat, round or mops do just fine. I just dip it in the wetted paint, swirl in on the palette then add water to whatever amount and consistency that is needed. Just keep going back and forth between the pigment and the water to get the amount and the consistency. Big areas needing coverage require a big puddle of water/pigment at whatever consistency. The initial wash is typically at a "tea" consistency and will dry lighter than it looks when applied wet. Do your initial wet on wet blocking washes with a big brush. It should go on fast and loose. Does this info help? Have fun.
@prof_nelson Thank you! I will try it this way. I really appreciate your videos. I've learned how to paint in watercolor pretty much exclusively from UA-cam and trial/error so there are all sorts of gaps in my knowledge

It sure does. Thanks for watching.
