Draw Faces like a Pro with this 20 Minute Warmup
Thanks! Your instruction is invaluable to me. Merry Christmas 🎄
Thank you for this challenging eye tutorial -- my very first attempt at a human eye! I have been avoiding this kind of drawing bc I had no idea how to do it. Much appreciation - for sharing your wheel house!
You are welcome and thanks for watching.
I just finished 2 commissioned paintings. One thing I've noticed is people don't necessarily want accuracy as much as they want their subjects to be "pretty". 😂 I had the people spot on and the person wanted changes that made the subjects look less like them, but better than they actually were. The subjects had enormous toothy smiles. The person who hired me had me make their smiles smaller. Plus she had me do them in black and white which I thought was strange. Who am I to judge. I made my pay and she was happy in the end. I love doing people, but they are the most difficult subject because unless you're accurate, people can tell immediately. You can fudge other subjects. Perspective is the other painting killer. If a building is off the entire painting is affected. I appreciate your videos for showing the proper way to do things. I am self taught, so you're the education I could never afford. Thanks, professor.
Hey, I appreciate that nice comment. It is just what I have managed to learn in teaching the subject. I can't show students everything in one class. It is a progressive skill-building process. Clients do make the tasks a challenge at times. I have noticed the first time working with a client (design, portrait, scene) are always the most challenging. You have to build trust with them on the first project. After that first successful job, they will give you more reign. Thanks for watching and the great comment.
I wish my drawing instructors would have taught drawing like this instead of just throwing objects up and say "DRAW IT". Good tutorial!! And thank you for having the reference photo available while drawing. Some ppl do not show their reference while doing tutorials and it just doesn't teach the "why' when drawing or painting. Love it!!
Yes, that was how I was taught in college too. Very frustration and made me wonder why I was paying so much for the experience. Thanks for watching.
I'm ur new audience... It's nice to learn from u❤❤
Hey, welcome aboard and have fun learning. Let me know if you have any questions.
Just awesome. Your instruction makes it look so easy but as you say it comes from years of study and practice.
Practice is the key and it not only about observation, but is about the importance of being able to make an interesting and confident mark with whatever you are drawing or painting with. Thanks for watching.
This is probably a dumb question, but how do you keep your work flow going, but not dirty up your paints by mixing colors and dipping your brush in and out of different paint colors? Do you clean your brush before dipping into another color? I'm enjoying your videos!
Nope, not a dumb question. If I'm dabbing into a dense color like umbers or the blues, I don't worry about the contamination. The solution isn't dense enough to cause problems. If I'm dabbing into the lighter colors - yellows, ochres and oranges, I'll rinse the brush in the water before dabbing into them. I hope this helps.
@prof_nelson yes, that helps. I suppose I didn't think about the difference in acrylics and watercolor. It finally dawned on me that since watercolor is watery, the brushes are probably easier to clean on-the-fly. I'm used to much thicker paint with acrylics. The technique of dampening your brush on a paper towel to blend color looks like a life changer. I haven't tried it yet, but I'm anxious to try it. I'm thinking about illustrating a childrens book. As a graphic designer, my go to is digital, but now I'm thinking of watercolor as an option. Thanks for the inspiration and knowledge! You're awesome!
I like how you achieved texture on the walls.
Yep, the glazing of irregular shapes and marks is the secret sauce 🙂 Thanks for watching.
I learned a lot just watching you go through the process. Thank you.
That’s good to hear. Not too boring...? Thanks for watching.
Always helps to see another approach to drawing faces. Thank you.
You bet. Loomis is a great method, not the only one, but a good one.
I like the longer format and the subject matter
That is good to know. I worry about them being too boring. Thanks for watching.
Thank you!
You're welcome! Have fun with those cars in your scenes.
Looks good man! 👍
Glad you like it. Thanks again.
Great video! Graphic Designer here too. You seem to have a lot of knowledge, and I think it's wonderful that you are willing to share it. Watercolor has been a difficult medium for me, but your videos have peeked my interest. I might give it another try.
Oh good, I'm glad I've peaked your interest in watercolor. It's the best medium for people who are impatient (like me). I just can't bring myself to work on pieces for 8 to 12+ hours anymore. Give it a go and thanks for watching.
Great job! 👍
Thank you! Cheers!
Love this long format and the cityscape with all the wonderful textures! Thank you very much! Happy holidays!
That is good to know. Those "bigger", "good" watercolor tutorials kick my butt. They are a lot more work than the down and dirty technique tuts. Thanks for watching and letting me know. Happy holidays to you too.
This was awesome, thanks!
Glad you liked it! Thanks for watching.
"Craggier" is an adjective I am using from now on..
Damn, im so happy to see someone so talented in art this happy and nonchelaunt sharing knowledge of the craft. Great video, awesome attitude. Thanks for inspiring me to try more.
I'm happy to help. Have fun on your creative journey and thanks for watching.
Thanks Rusty. Love your videos. Keep up the good work. Painting everyday and started just 5 years ago at 69!!! So Thank You!
That is awesome! Thanks for watching.
Rusty where can I find the loom is method
Here’s the link: rnelsonarts.com/drawing-and-watercolor-resources/
After watching your video I downloaded the book, Figure Drawing for all it's Worth, Thank you, your video was also very helpful.
Glad to hear the video was helpful. You'll learn a lot from Loomis.
Very cool!
Aww, thank you!
Ele disse que parece bom . É BOM!
Obrigado por assistir! Que bom que você gostou.
Wow - really tricky perspective in this!!! Your finished work is gorgeous, though. I especially love your dark, watery shadows
This one was fun to paint. I need to get busy and work on more cityscapes, so the don't feel so overworked. Thanks for watching.
YAY RUSTY!!! I asked for a landscape to help with perception and depth, and you delivered. I'm enjoying your videos and your artistic knowledge. I have to go practice now. ❤
Have fun practicing.
Lovely. We can always slow the video down and follow along. If the music isn't to our taste, we can turn the volume down!
That's true. There is always some solution to a problem. Thanks for being so tolerant.
Adding a figure to scenes is definitely a goal of mine. I don’t really have problems with one figure but a grouping or multiple figures really intimidates me. It is almost like getting the perspective of multiple buildings correct.
Groups of figures can be fun, once you get the hang of it. I'll do a group figure tutorial - coming soon. Thanks for watching.
Wonderful
Thank you.
@ no sir thank you :)
Theres nothing better then the loomis books heads and figures got his books i do tutorials on Loomis most of the time great vedio
I agree. A great book with tons of helpful information. Have fun watching.
I need to fix a glob that was supposed to be a tree center of interest , any advise?
Forgot to add, the glob was there before I saw this tutorial. I’ll tray to add your technique to it and let you know how it goes
Just "erase" it with lots of dobs of water. Don't scrub, but flush the glob with a lot of water applied with a brush. It will reactivate and loosen up and you can erase the mess up. Let it dry and take a second stab at it. Good luck.
Merci superbe video Thank you very nice video Michel from belgium
Hi Michel from Belgium. Thanks for watching!
beautiful barn! The old wood looks so real the way you layered glazes and lines for the boards.
I like doing those old buildings. I like the glazing process to build complex colors and color modulation. Thanks for watching.
I’m definitely gonna have to retry this a few times 😂, I just started learning how to sketch yesterday and I’m so thankful for these tutorials, although I’m much better so far at the basic geometric versions. Thank you for all your hard work!🧡
Keep practicing. You'll get the hang of it.
I remember when we first started doing perspectives in my high school art class about 6 years ago now, and it was always super easy yet after getting rusty, I still needed a reminder on how to start, thank you for bringing back some lost memories and helping me get back to the basics of sketching!🧡
You be back up to speed before you know it. Thanks for watching.
Thank you, Mr. Nelson. I was watching a Bob Ross video and yours on the side. and I decided to give it a look. My interest in drawing is to illustrate a couple of books I have written. Watching you has given me hope that I will be able to do it.
You bet. I'm glad you found the video helpful.
THANK YOU SO MUCH I USED TO DO PEOPLE SKETCH FOR BOOK COVERS BACK IN THE 60'S AND 70''S IM 74 NOW STILL DRAW AND PAINTGBYSM
Cool, what covers did you do? Thanks for watching!
@@prof_nelson for middle school books and for the pastor of the church I used to visit and also cartoon books in 1990 I was going to dr5aw and paint back grounds for DISNYE BUT GOT CALL TO IRACK WAR AND LOST THE JOB .
Thank you. This is a wonderful lesson.
You bet, glad you like it.
New to your channel. I enjoy the fact that even you as a professional drew the red car too tall. It gives me hope.😊 I can draw, but it takes me 3 weeks for one drawing. Your white car has a cat sitting on the dashboard! LOL
And when I paint cats, their spots look like little cars :) Thanks for watching!
I can't resist not to watch your tuts not only they're all perfect but also your face right your face has positive energy to me I can feel it with all my cells , if you let me to have your face printed on my house wall can I?
Sure, send me a picture of that wall. What a hoot! :)
Fantastic, my friend. More studies, please. As a beginner in WC there are so many moving parts that I get lost on big projects. Studies I can handle until I get the concepts of H2O to pigment, etc. figured out. I’ll also check out your Loomis studies. His “Fun with a Pencil” got me back into drawing. That dude was a freaking genius teacher as well as fine artist! Thank you!!
OK, I like doing the little studies. They are fairly low-impact for me to do, edit and post. Yeah, Loomis went major in-depth on the topic, didn't he?
If I can ask for a hint: Drawing/Painting a bowl as seen when sitting at a table (about 90 degree angle view?) it's easy to suggest the depth of the bowl. But how can the depth of a shallow dinner plate be hinted at? At the moment, mine are looking a lot like flat vinal or CD records.
OK, good tip. I'll add that to the to-do list.
@@prof_nelson Thanks!
Typical method crap. Draw what you see. Look at the object observation in real light is most important. Don't get into American methodology. It will kill any form of inner creativity.
Hey, you got to start somewhere. In my opinion, you have to know what you don't know before focusing on creativity. Trying to create without the knowledge and the tools can be demoralizing. Everyone is different and there are many ways of getting there - Loomis is just one them.
Great video, really helpful. Thanks Rusty 👍
You bet. Thanks for watching and let me know how it goes.
Thank you for this nice video. I will try out this technique soon! Hopefully I will see a lot more of your videos!
Cool, have fun doing and watching.
All i got is awsome thanks for the sharing.
Thanks! I'm glad you found it helpful.
Thank you, Sir! 🙏
You bet, my pleasure.
Thank you. Very beautiful and useful. Will practice this as advised. 😅
Have fun practicing and let me know how it goes!
