We travel on from the exit of the Crinan Canal in Crinan to the city of Oban. It was raining, but the sea was still calm. Thank you Dieter for another informative episode. I’m not convinced the ferry master had right of way being on your port side and Whitehorse abaft his beam. The lines on the charts are informative only indicating routes, however I’m not sure what local rules are in-force for Oban harbour. Either way discretion is the best course of action given the size disparity. Take care.

      From the Oban harbour website: "In order to reduce the risks of incidents between large commercial vessels and small leisure craft the whole area defined in the Code for Safe Navigation document (and shown on Admiralty chart 1790), which includes the North and South entrances to Oban Bay, shall be deemed to be Narrow Channels in accordance with Rule 9 of the COLREGS."

    Local sailors do often traverse the Corryvreckan, however, it is very dependent on conditions. Slack water is the only recommended time when it is safe to traverse. Sailing to Oban though the most direct route is the one you followed.

    Dieter, I was slave to 36-109 built in Hong Kong about 1969. A woodie. with a single. She was a project boat and I spent years trying to restore her to something near original. Fortunatly A Canadian couple are carrying on with the restoration but it is a very long process. Our cruising grounds were Puget Sound Georgia Straits and Desolation Sound. Very few canals and LOTS of Islands, all salt water. Wish you well and many pleasant trips.

When I chose my Grand Banks, I consciously tried to find a GRP boat knowing about the work to be done with a woody. Still 1974 was the first or second year of GRP Grand Banks :-) It seems to be like a tank, with very sturdy and thick hull.

    Hi Dieter! I hope you are having a good time. Thanks for the content, I am enjoying watching you on your travels. You have been helping me unwittingly, because I was in the process of looking for a boat to undertake "The Great Loop" which is a 6000 nautical mile circuit of The Eastern Seaboard including many sorts of cruising. A lot of it is carried out on inland waterways including many rivers, canals, The Great Lakes and there are also some open ocean sections including The Gulf of Mexico and several others. I had already decided on a Grand Banks 36 before I discovered your channel but watching this video and seeing how well "Whitehorse" performed has reinforced my decision. She really coped very well. I appreciate that much of the time you were motoring into a Headsea but I really expected to see more rolling, especially when you altered your course so that you were almost quartering the waves when you neared the safe port. I was wondering, is she fitted with a stabilizer of any kind? I would be surprised if you answer yes to this as I have been looking for a while and have looked at many GB's of this size and I don't think I have ever seen one that has but I was so surprised by the lack of heeling, I felt I had to ask. Also, I was wondering if she is fitted with the twin 120hp Lehmans or something else? Thanks Dieter!😉 Keep em coming!!!

    • @cruisinggrandbanks36whiteh48
      @cruisinggrandbanks36whiteh48 Місяць тому

      Engines are 2012 Perkins Sabre 135 hp. (see comment on other answer). There are no stabilizers, the rolling was not as much as I expected but can get hard if the waves hit right from the sides. I thought of trying once to mount the sail, but have not done so yet.

    Nice! I am a Grand Banks fan, approaching retirement age and thinking about getting one like you did. I have no experience with rhe buying process of a large boat; how did you find the independent inspector?

    • @cruisinggrandbanks36whiteh48
      @cruisinggrandbanks36whiteh48 Місяць тому

      I can really recommend to get such a nice old lady (mine is now 50 years). I got the inspector by asking the sales agent for 2 or 3 marine inspectors, which he willingly did supply. Then I phoned each of them and wanted to know their experience with Grand Banks or similar boats. There was just one who had the necessary knowledge. I had also agreed to a defined price for the survey, so that I did not get any bad surprises. On the day of the survey, I was physically there to talk with the expert before and after the survey, so that he could show me his findings on the spot. I did learn much about my boat. What I did not realize was, that he only looked at the things that were safety relevant (like hull, motors, gps, plotters, anchor, electrical sytem, etc.) but not so much about other things, like the quality of the mast (which is not so important on a motor boat (it was actually rotten at the top)) or the heating. Wishing you all the best and please to not hesitate to ask more, if you like. I can also recommend that you join the Grand Banks owners Facebook group. regards, Dieter

    The Norwegian government should explore more options for tunnel digging. As politics has postponed this project, and the focus and large tax money distribution now goes to Gaza, it time to invite the world’s best tunnel diggers to Norway, and it could mean peace in the Middle East too. In addition to the Stad tunnel, there are need for much more tunnel digging in this country. Norway already takes advantage of guest workers from Nepal, to build walk pats / steps to the city mountains. Cut the BS of politics, delaying such hands-on tunnel projects, and we have long lasting results and peace in the world. Any culture and languages for part-time workers are of no discrimination here. The ancient Egyptians did it, why not modern Vikings ?

    I enjoy watching your steaming through hard weather, as much as doing it myself in my 1978 36’ Classic, but I would like more context: what RPM you are running the engines, speed over ground, wave height and wind speed. The voyage to Norway was back in 2022, after I had bought the GB in France. But I will take your advice and show some more times the instruments when I make new videos from my Norwegian tours. To the context: Engines are 2 Perkins Sabre M135 from 2012, they have now ca. 1800 hrs. During my voyage to Norway I run them usually with around 1600 RPM giving mit a speed o.g. of 7 - 9 kt. The waves in western France were probably around 1.5 meters at highest. We encountered some of about 2 meters in Scotland :-( , but I do not have a video of that, I was too occupied to keep the boat on course. It is difficult to say generally, what I consider as unsafe conditions, but with my boat it would probably be waves of more than 3 meters. But crossing waves (as we had in Scotland) are very dangerous even if smaller as the boat rocks to all directions. Hope I got some of your questions answered, but you are welcome to ask more. Kind regards Dieter

    Nice weather again! How many hours on your Perkins diesels?

      When I bought the boat, they had about 900 hrs each, the whole trip to Norway was about 200 hours on the engines.

      Yes, we were very happy about this, the sea on the English Channel and the Irish sea can be rather rough.

    This was a great description of that process of looking for and buying a boat. I was glad to get the European perspective. Ultimately not that different than in the US.

      Thanks for your comment, nice to learn that you got some new perspective. The biggest difference between Europe and US is probably the different customs and legal conditions in the various countries in Europe.

    Hi Dieter, Deine Strömungsinformationen in diesem waren sehr interessant, habe das noch nirgendwo so erklärt gesehen. RobHK ist soviel ich weiss Norweger und erfolgreicher UA-camr, vielleicht wäre er bereit, Dir mit einigen tips, wie Du schneller zu mehr Erfolg auf UA-cam kommen kannst zu helfen. Ich hab mit ihm vor ein paar Monaten einmal korrespondiert, weil mir seine Husqvarna so gefällt, vielleicht mag er sich an das erinnern. Er ist äusserst nett. Wer weiss vielleicht lebt ihr ja nicht so weit auseinander und man könnte sich vielleicht mal treffen. Es gibt aber auch einen Schweizer, seinen Aufnahmen zufolge lebt er im Thurgau, der posted Videos wie man mit dem iPhone cinematic filmen kann und ich finde er ist sehr gut, vor allem wie er seine Methodik erklärt und zeigt. Wenn Dich das interessiert, such ich seinen Kanal raus. Ich sehe wie sehr Du Dich anstrengst und würde mich sehr über Deinen Erfolg freuen. ;)

      Es freut mich, dass ich dir neue Aspekte der Gezeiten aufzeigen konnte. Danke für die Hinweise betr. UA-cam. Es gibt auf YT sehr viel Videos zum Thema, aber die meisten YT-Akteure wenden sich eher an junge Leute und die sind dann auch viel aktiver auf dem Internet und in den sozialen Medien. Ruhige Reisen mit einer Motoryacht fallen da leider nicht darunter, vielleicht, weil das die meisten sich nicht leisten können oder weil es eben nicht so viel "Action" bedeutet. Ich versuche einfach, weiterhin meine Art Video zu verbessern und geduldig weiterzuarbeiten. Ich möchte mich nicht für irgendwelche Tricks oder Spielchen zu etwas verbiegen, das ich nicht selbst bin. Dafür bin ich zu alt. Ich wünsche dir weiterhin gute Unterhaltung mit meinen Videos. Gruss Dieter

    Thank you Dieter for your calming and enchanting videos aboard MY Whitehorse. I spent 37 years in the Royal Navy rising to captain of ships and submarines, sailing the Irish Sea and West Coast of Scotland many times. One of m favourite appointments was Navigating Officer and I enjoy your informative insights into passage planning. Keep up the excellent work.

      Thank you very much for your positive and encouraging words, I really appreciate. Especially from such an experienced seaman like you! Not every video will also have a "theoretical" part, but when it fits to the journey I will do so. Kind regards from Norway Dieter
