What are the biggest and best space battles in science fiction? Some argue they're in Star Wars. Others might pick Babylon 5 or Star Trek. But we think they're all in one massive television series called Battlestar Galactica. These are the best ship battles of the entire BSG franchise, and maybe in all of sc-fi and entertainment. How The 2000s Best Sci-Fi Family Movie Failed, And Why It's Robin Williams Fault
Переглядів 15 тис.День тому
This clever sci-fi family movie was pretty much doomed from the outset thanks to comparisons to another movie starring Robin Williams. Twenty years later, it’s time to admire Zathura: A Space Adventure flick for what it is: a fantastic adventure story that not only stands as the best entry in the Jumanji franchise but as a stellar movie all on its own. And it's all thanks to Iron Man director J...
The Best Star Trek Episode Isn't A Fantasy, It's Real

What is the best Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episode? The answer is very clear. Star Trek: Deep Space Nine was a game-changing entry in the Star Trek canon. While Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Voyager continued with the more traditional space adventure tone that had been set by Star Trek: The Original Series, this series went a very different route with its approach. It resulted ...
4 Of Sci-Fi's Most Explosive Battles Are In An Underrated Franchise
Переглядів 153 тис.21 день тому
Science fiction movies and TV shows are full of big space battles, but it’s rare to see those attempt some kind of realism. There are a few recent exceptions. The Expanse wowed audiences with a realistic depiction of what future space battles might be like. And the 2000s Battlestar Galactica used real Newtonian Physics to make some of the most incredible space slugfests ever captured on screen....

We thought we’d take a look at another big-budget sci-fi entry from the ‘90s that underperformed at the box office. But this one is a little special because it happens to be a sequel to two of the biggest and best sci-fi movies ever made by two of the biggest directors ever, James Cameron and Ridley Scott. This is why Alien 3 failed and how it was redeemed.

With James Gunn's new superhero universe in full effect, it’s time to start doing a post-mortem of the DC Extended Universe as it will go down in history along with the Marvel universe. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is possibly the most divisive entry in the entire DC Extended Universe. And it's also the worst. More DC: www.giantfreakinrobot.com/topic/dc

Plenty of ‘90s sci-fi movies were a little too out there for regular audiences. One film has managed to maintain its weirdness over the years and develop the cult following it deserves, even though it tanked at the box office and was promptly forgotten thanks to The Matrix. We’re tuning our brains into one of the best sci-fi films of the ‘90s, Dark City, to figure out why it failed.

The Worst Sci-Fi Spaceship of All Time, and It's On A New Show
There is one thing that always bugs me about the Sacrifice of Angels fight... the animation teams forgot how the Defiant's Pulse Phasers sound
Everyone that talks about this movie with Dredd "never taking his helmet off" is a misconception. Dredd has removed his helmet a number of times, just you NEVER see his face. It's either an extreme close-up from the nose down and the back of his head.
Diane Lane, tho… (sigh)
"Judge Dredd" (1995)? I think I may have seen parts of this Sylvester Stallone vehicle.
I bought Dick tracy good movie Al Pacino was annoying
I saw this on opening night. I loved it then and still love it now, for many of the same reasons you mentioned. I also really liked the 2012 movie. Karl Urban is always great but this version had flying Lawmasters and an ABC Warrior!
I think it tried to compact too much in, block wars, angel gang, rico, a Hammerstein robot etc etc
Liked it from the get go. Was an independent comic fan at the time. Was disappointed the helmet came off but it didn't ruin it for me.
I like the Karl Urban movie a lot. But, I also really enjoyed the campy fun of the Stallone version.
Saw it in theatre, it was sh!t. Sounds like only film wonks or "artistes" like it.
Removing helmets is a slap in the face to InCels - just like in Halo and the Mandalorian.
Because the morons who made these movies don't realize that they are dark satires on American culture from a British perspective.
You forgot Stargate
Stallone Judge Dredd is a guilty pleasure of mine.
Heh, strange that I didn’t know about this movie. When I think of a movie knee-capoed by The Matrix, I immmediately think about The Thirteenth Floor, just due to the proximity of thier theatre runs.
I was praying Leviathan was on this list.
The problem is Formulaic Hollywood. It should have been more serious.
It's a great movie! Always fun to watch! 😁
I like this version more than Dredd. Maybe I bought too much into the hype of the later movie, but it was a flatter affair than this full-on Hollywood extravaganza. However inauthentic Stallone's version is to the comic, I love the look. It's been a good long while since I've seen it, so maybe it's not as good as I remember, but I do remember liking it a lot!
Stallone's Dredd nailed the look of Mega City One, they nailed the comic book look of the city but Karl Urban's portrayal of Dredd set the standard I'm afraid.
What's wrong with that movie? For a 1990's piece it was good entertainment.
If you think about it, the large crews make no sense on future ships. Assuming that robotics and AI develop at the same pace as propulsion and large weapons, the era of ships with hundreds of people on board makes no sense. You'd need far more space for food, oxygen, private rooms, and a whole host of other issues that living people create. Instead the ship would be largely automated, and it would be necessary to have the computer handle the tactical aspect of battle. Yes, there would be people on board, but probably a few dozen. It could react thousands of times more quickly than humans making decisions on targeting and would learn much more quickly what opposing commanders are doing.
I agree with your choices. There are some very good films here.
If you're going to watch a 90's Stallone SF film that also has Rob Schneider in the cast I'd recommend 'Demolition Man.'
they took off Dredd's Helmet, HUGGEEEE MISTAKE
I enjoyed both versions I think Urbans is better, much like Total Recall I prefer the Arnie version to the newer one but both are totally enjoyable in there own way.
We sentence you sir to the long walk😂😂😂
Without the REALLY cheap grift of Kirk's tribble death, Darkness might have been salvagable if Khan had been killed by Starlfeet while trying to unfreeze him and Cumberbatch had actually been Joachim ( KhaN'S first mate ), subverting a LOT of rumors and expectations,
I saw that movie in the theater when it first came out. I had forgotten all about it until this video was posted.
How a 2000's Comedy Both Hurt and Help The Pro Wrestling Industry at the same time and that film it was 2000's Ready To Rumble
If you're going to talk about Sly Stallone's take on Judge Dredd, then you have to talk about the much superior reboot starring Karl Urban.
the trek fandom does not deserve the genius and passion and charisma that is avery brooks.
i wonder how different the fandom would be if we had a whole season of Benny Russell
Anything anyone used for good can be spun to.evil vice. Versa too😮😢
Propaganda... authorities in majority are occupation forces pretending to be otherwise... Synonymous with Parisian gendarmes dragooned into assistance ghestapo and SS collabos of the 40s... Mercenary hessian pirates in employ of admiralty courts for profit impersonating peace officers NOT constitutional ...😮😢🌎🤔🧐🤨⚠️
First 10 seconds im thinking Dredd?
Dredd!
Yes, I agree with many of your criticisms, but I LOVE this movie! The effects, the design, the costumes, the terrific Alan Silvestri score. Total camp and totally entertaining. As I said, I love it, and I don't care who knows it.😁
*TNG Season 3 Ep 15 “Yesterday’s Enterprise”* needs to be on this list, if not at the top. It’s crucial to the survival of the Federation, now losing a hopeless war to the Klingons. The Enterprise-C crew once saved realizes they must/will die by re-entering an unwinnable fight. Guinan tells Tasha Yar she doesn’t belong in the current timeline and will die a meaningless death, so Tasha volunteers for the suicide mission. This episode has made me tear up for 35 years. At any rate, you missed a spot.
I didn’t like it…
Shoutout to Bear McCreary and his baller soundtrack for the New Caprica fight: ua-cam.com/video/so10dKbhorI/v-deo.html
Fun Fact; in the scene where Stallone and Schneider run down a flight of stairs, and Schneider's line is "Y'know, you're a lot of fun to be with, Dredd!", Schneider slipped and face planted down the stairs. Can be seen in the 'making of' featurette.
I used to see the end of a lot if films and although i havent seen it in it's entirety, i did enjoy "12:01"
I don't like any of the reboots. From turning the Enterprise into some kind of cheap REO hot rod to transforming Kirk into a really smart bad boy. It all goes down like a really stinky cheese without the camp. Flash can't replace substance.
not only did pegasus save galactica, she took out one base ship when she attacked, she also rammed one and one of her flight pods crashed into and destroyed a third. if you had to sacrifice the pegasus, what a way to go.
To be fair to the movie's box office, lets not undersell how popular where the MMPR in the mid 90's. I never liked that show and i was the exception to the rule in my age group.
The problem with this movie is it was just cheesy as hell. "I AM THE LAW" Come on... nobody took it seriously despite it's serious content and subject matter
It's a garbage movie that doesn't just ignore the source material, it pisses on it. Dredd got the soul of Dredd. The satire comment is absolutely fair, but undermined by the camp. Fantastic vice as usual
As a 9 yearold kid in 1995, who had never read a single page of any Dredd comicbook, i can say i loved every minute of that movie. That movie was one of many that made me get into comics/graphic novels etc later on in my life, i dont care what anyone says about it, i f'in love it
That is amazing and I like the movie too for similar reasons as you. I loved the comics and I also enjoyed the movie.
I collected the Dredd vs. Predator comic in the late 90s and am still interested in this character
A friend of mine was an extra in it, he was one of the guys carrying the stretcher Rob Schneider was on in one scene. He said Schneider was hilarious in person, and that Stallone and Schneider had fun with the roles between takes. It sounded like the movie production was more 'fun nineties camp' while it was being filmed.
Can we make a list of requests for nineties movies for Giant Freakin Robot to discuss? Starship Troopers, Face/Off, Freejack, The Arrival could be on the list.
Walk away from the source material and put in comedy sidekick, then expect a failure.
Amen
Love this movie, and other than him taking the helmet off, it's a brilliant take on the source material. With a few caveats lol.
I'm glad you love it so much
