I've been saying for years that this movie is one of the few that actually deserve a modern remake. This, and The Wraith. Good movies that didn't quite make it big for one reason or another. Making reboots of movies that were wildly popular is always a recipe for disaster because you can't recreate the "magic" that made it a smash hit. Reboots for stuff like Ghostbusters, Conan, Robocop, Total Recall, were obviously bound to pale in comparison to the original. Redoing the Last Starfighter? This movie was basically the grandfather of CGI technology and movies. I think on that premise alone it should be left alone. I don't see how a reboot or a remake could possibly remotely come close to what was achieved in this movie. For starters I don't see an actor who could possibly play the role of Centauri any better than the late great Robert Preston. He adapted aspects of a role he played in the movie The Music Man. Even if you had an actor study every single one of Robert Preston's roles including the music man, I don't think you would be able to come remotely close to being able to achieve what Robert Preston did in that movie. My biggest fear is that any attempt to do a remake of this movie, would only bring embarrassment to anybody funding the project, directing this movie, or even so much as acting in it. It would be potentially the biggest box office let down of all time. Take my advice, don't do it. It would be a crime beyond measure.

I saw a documentary that said they had a higher resolution textures and models for the CGI but the render times were too long for both budget and time constraints. I wonder if anyone still has those original textures and models to do a special edition of the The Last Starfighter with the planned original graphics.
The remake would have to be made with "modern audiences" in mind. So Alex would become Alexa, who never made a misstep while playing the game, and always won from the start. Centauri would be played by a gender fluid black person. Alexa's partner would be a straight, white male who is overconfident, but incompetent and never learns from his multiple mistakes. Ah yes, that would pave the way to the film flopping, and the producers blaming the audience.
Alexa, most likely. Centauri, highly probable. Partner? Nah, Maggie will be Alexa's lesbian girlfriend. The person you described will be the lame platonic best friend who's clearly simping but eternally friendzoned, until he realizes he'd only hold her back.

I really don't want this to end up as a Bay film. I would so much more prefer a remaster of this film with new effects shots to replace the existing ones, but no studio would pay for that. Similar story for Ladyhawke. I would rather have a remaster AND a new score, instead of a remake. Some movies have casting magic and The Last Starfighter and Ladyhawke both had that. I couldn't think of an actor to play Centauri now. Robert Preston completely made that character.

I would like if they just left this alone. As others have stated, I feel they would (possibly are) going to ruin it. 2c ramble done, time to watch!!
If Last Starfighter is remade, then they need someone like Robert Preston as Centauri. How about a remake of "Blade Runner" and Zardoz"? You've commented on my comment in a previous video that mentioned Last Starfighter. We both seem to love that movie.I still have my 8-bit and 16-bit Atari computers. I've written Apps(code) in both. I even wrote my Master's Thesis in Human Nutrition using my 16-bit Atari computer.
No. It doesn't need a remake it's perfect the way it is. It will only get the usual Hollywood or Disney treatment of grinding everything down that once was good so there is no point.
Top of my head, 8s sci fi movies that could use a reboot: Alien Nation, Flight of the Navigator/Explorers, Lifeforce. The Last Starfighter? After Ready Player One came and thankfully went?!
You mention Ready Player One, but Ernest Cline wrote another book, MUCH more like The Last Starfighter, called "Armada". It's very much based on the same concept, although it has a very different ending.
The outdated CGI gives the movie charm. It makes it feel like Alex steps into what video games of the time were, lending to an immersive feeling of him (and the audience) being transported into another world entirely alien similar to Tron. So while a remake or sequel would look "better", they would also lose that charm unless they went for a retro but polished (by modern standards) aesthetic.
Bring back as many of the original actors as you can and do a sequel. Alex and Maggie are on Rylos with their son and daughter. Their son is a great pilot, like his dad, but lacks discipline. Their daughter is smart and savvy, but isn’t outgoing and adventurous. Alex is a general in the Star League. Lewis, Alex’s brother, becomes a great Starfighter too.Maggie becomes a renowned scientist. Zur has been defeated, but Centauri and Grig were lost in the war(since both of the actors are deceased). A new enemy threatens the Star League and they have to overcome the new threat.
Even if they tied that they would murder it, too much has changed in the world for anyone to do any sort of justice to this film or it's legacy, no they need to leave it alone, they can not bring back the magic that was. Cheers.
Relax, all. I have been following this off and on for several years. The "owner" of this will not release it to ANYONE that he doesn't think can do it justice. Seth Rogan was after it for a while. Can you imagine? Seth freaking Rogan? The Star League is safe (for now).
If there's any game tie-in the already stinging woke game devs might insist its protagonist be a girl character linked to the film's male lead. If its even a male character.
DON'T REBOOT IT. Release an updated "Special Edition" version of the original, like Lucas did with the Original Trilogy in the '90s. Then follow that up with sequels or prequels or whatever. Just don't mess with the original. It's a MASTERPIECE, just like the original Star Wars, Back to the Future, and so many other movies that should NEVER EVER be rebooted.
Super Dimension Fortress Macross, Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross and Genesis Climber MOSPEADA. That is Robotech. It's just an edit from these shows. What do you want remade?
THIS is a perfect example of when a film DESERVES A FAITHFUL REMAKE Heaton's Ben Hur was the best Pacino's Scarface is the best Fraser's mummy is the best version of the mummy along with the best popcorn movie ever and it's perfect. But that crap with Tom Cruise luckily didn't erase the good one from existence so 😏

This doesn’t need a reboot or remake…it can be released with updated cgi and will still hold up.
No. It doesn't need a remake it's perfect the way it is. It will only get the usual Hollywood or Disney treatment of grinding everything down that once was good so there is no point.
This is my absolute favorite movie, please don't ruin it with a reboot.
Top of my head, 8s sci fi movies that could use a reboot:
Alien Nation, Flight of the Navigator/Explorers, Lifeforce.
The Last Starfighter? After Ready Player One came and thankfully went?!
You mention Ready Player One, but Ernest Cline wrote another book, MUCH more like The Last Starfighter, called "Armada". It's very much based on the same concept, although it has a very different ending.
NO! Leave The Last Starfighter alone - it's perfect as it is.
The outdated CGI gives the movie charm. It makes it feel like Alex steps into what video games of the time were, lending to an immersive feeling of him (and the audience) being transported into another world entirely alien similar to Tron. So while a remake or sequel would look "better", they would also lose that charm unless they went for a retro but polished (by modern standards) aesthetic.
that is true, and the filmmakers would probably mess it up, but it would be interesting to see how the movie would look in present day.
Cheers.
They've been promising a continuation for over 10 years with Lance Guest and Catherine Mary Stewart returning.
Don't let Disney touch it!!!
This was a decent movie, the problem with a remake is that the Hollywood of today would probably 'woke' it to bits and ruin it!
When I was young and I saw this movie I said man I can't wait until we're older and they got better stuff to make graphics so they can remake it
Right there with you.
They remade Time Bandits.?…No way…Can’t they leave anything alone.!
Relax, all. I have been following this off and on for several years.
The "owner" of this will not release it to ANYONE that he doesn't think can do it justice.
Seth Rogan was after it for a while.
Can you imagine? Seth freaking Rogan?
The Star League is safe (for now).
Victory to the Star League!
A sequel would be nice.
It’s a magical flick. Just leave it be!
Well yeah I’d still pay to see it. Of course.
I'd be happy with updated special effects only. And release movie again.
If there's any game tie-in the already stinging woke game devs might insist its protagonist be a girl character linked to the film's male lead. If its even a male character.
If I won it I would still slip it into conversation too😂 Its a big thing to gamers.
Absolutely not, terrible idea. It’s perfect as it is.
There are others. Cloak & Dagger, and Explorers could stand to be remade too. If done well, of course.
Let's do Robotech !
Dunt-dun-nah dunnah-dun-dah!!!
Not sure how that relates but yes!
Super Dimension Fortress Macross, Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross and Genesis Climber MOSPEADA. That is Robotech. It's just an edit from these shows. What do you want remade?
THIS is a perfect example of when a film DESERVES A FAITHFUL REMAKE
Heaton's Ben Hur was the best
Pacino's Scarface is the best
Fraser's mummy is the best version of the mummy along with the best popcorn movie ever and it's perfect.
But that crap with Tom Cruise luckily didn't erase the good one from existence so 😏
It's not the effects that make the movie; it is the story and your ability to get into it. Do you believe?
“Reboots” and “remakes” = laziness/lack of originality.
How about something new, and not just remakes all the time.
That requires Creativity and Competence, two things sorely lacking in today's Hollyweird.;)
I see all they’d do to a remake. I had to grab a bucket, quick.
Such a great movie. I would hate to see them ruin it.
Remake it with DEI Hollywood standards! Would sell out theaters nightly!
If they don't mess it up.
Erin Grey in skintight outfits oh yeah
Like Back to the Future, LEAVE THE LAST STARFIGHTER ALONE!!!
Remake whatever you want, but leave these two alone. You'll only ruin them, and sure as hell will not make them better.
