Culture Shock Indonesia - 20 People Living in One House 🤯!
After about a decade of living in Sumatra, the culture shocks in Indonesia have been pretty minor and easy to adjust to... but this New Year's, we invited Agung's Karonese family to spend a few days staying with us - and it was a huge reminder of how different life in Indonesia is from life in New Zealand!
We had 21 people staying in our little house in Lake Toba for 3 nights, uniting as a family to sing, eat, swim, fish and explore.
It may have been loud, it may have been a bit chaotic, but it was SO MUCH FUN! Join us for a glimpse of what life is like when you're part of a large Indonesian family.

Happy New Year guys! 🎉❤ Thanks for sharing your family with us all! Terimakasih
Happy New Year Jill! Thanks for watching ☺️
Great to see Agung's family having fun and their interaction with one another - I love seeing how happy Agung is with his family. Good to see the activities that are available at Toba - his Mum looks lovely and so young !!!!! Amazing how they just put down a mat on the floor and sleep - 💛💚🧡Happy New Year
Yes - there were several bass available but everyone preferred to line up on the mats on the floor. Such a gift to be able to sleep anytime anywhere! Everyone was so happy to be together. 😍

Happy new year all I also got my first experience of a karo new year celebration in Medan. So many people Gotta love the family connections
Yes! Such big families and so nice how they all remain so connected even when they grow up and potentially move away! And always a lot of laughter. 😊
It took hesty 2 seconds to recognise Agung's family as her family from mummy father side Asna kacaribu born at kidupen

Mauliate guys! It was SO good to have the whole family together after so long. Happy New Year to you both! ☺️
🥳🎉🍾Selamat Ulang Tahun Semuanya - Happy New Year Everyone! How did you celebrate the New Year? With friends, family, a few drinks, or a quite night at home? We'd love to hear from you.
Selemat Tahun Baru, 2025! Year of the Snake associated with transformation, shedding its skin giving us renewal in all things! More medical stuff here, hope bagus sekali semuanya! Love from Liz & Cookie.
Hi Liz and Cookie! So nice to hear from you. Selamat tahun baru! Love year of the snake - I (Carly) was born in the year of the snake, so must be a lucky year for us! Sorry to hear you've got more medical stuff going on. Sending big hugs. We have a new video coming in a day or two! ☺️
Im heading to notth sumatra next month and am considering having my dentures replaced … do u think its possible at the place you visited or in Medan to do it well and cheaply…many thanks, hope to see u in tuktuk
Hey! So exciting you're coming to Sumatra soon! I wouldn't actually recommend the place we went haha. There are probably several places in Medan you could look into: I've heard really good things about the Medan Dental Specialist Centre which you can find on Google. But overall, Sumatra's not really the place to go if you're after top of the line dental or medical - I'd suggest maybe Kuala Lumpur or Penang if you maybe have a stopover there?
Amazing video! Thank you! Isn't there a Telkomsel stand in the background at 3:52? Wouldn't it be possible to get a SIM card there?
Great spotting. To be honest, we were so focused on transport that we NEVER noticed this haha. 🙈 Assuming that they are set up to register cards for international visitors, then yes this is definitely an excellent option! Sometimes the smaller booths aren't actually equipped to do this, hence the need for a GRAPARI. But we'll try and find out if this stand is still functional.
@@ExploringSumatra Ok, would be great if you could give an update when you find out. I will come to North Sumatra in April. 😊
Please , can u provide me an adventurous travel itinerary of sumatra ?
Hi there! That's a really difficult thing to do. We'd first need to know how long you have and what parts of Sumatra you're most interested in! To get you started, we recommend having a good read of our website: www.exploringsumatra.com It has SO MANY free blogs about Sumatra travel to help you plan your trip. And then when you're ready to plan an itinerary, we're happy to offer some advice, or check out our eBook: The North Sumatra Travel Guide & Itinerary Planner. It's the BEST resource available to help you plan everything to do with your North Sumatra trip. You can find more about it here: exploringsumatra.com/north-sumatra-travel-guide-itinerary-planner/

Yes the views here are just gorgeous. I can't imagine ever leaving but eventually we need to settle and build our own place somewhere. Until then we enjoy every minute of it ☺️
💖💖
great video. So how much does the bus cost from Kualanamu airport Sumatra to Bukit Lawang. How much hours did it take.
There is no direct bus, you'd either need to take a bus into Medan (to Pinang Baris Bus Station) and another to Bukit Lawang, or a bus to Binjai then another on to Bukit Lawang. It would probably cost maximum 100,000 rupiah. By car it's around 3-4 hours, but by bus, with stops, you're probably looking at 5-6.
Af Tropic Fully humid
Super bloody gila 😅 PS. I love this soundtrack!
Praise the Lord, the GOD 🙏💐
Looks great, how long would it take on a scooter from lake toba?
It's around 7 hours by private car, so I'd say add a few hours on scooter! A very full day of travel. Probably best to break it up by heading to Berastagi first and staying a night or two there then continue to Tangkahan :)
Looks like such a magical area, I'm due to visit my brother who lives in tuk tuk next month and look forward to exploring myself.
Ahhhh that’s great! Martin is a good friend and the absolute best tour guide for you. 😀
Doesn't look very safe - or very comfortable!
Gosh that describes soooo many things in Indonesia haha.
Itu di indo😅
Great video guys! I was just having a conversation with someone yesterday about people not queuing in Indonesia, budding in front of me at the check-out counter. Or how the Lombok people will board a plane in a big unorganized mass and push and bang your legs with their suitcases. NZ sounds similar to Canada. We are extremely polite and well-mannered, and I find a lot of Indonesian behaviour very rude and shocking. The local villagers always call me gemuk (fat) and I was offended for several years. In Canada we would only call someone a name if we were purposefully being mean. But yes, like you say Indonesians speak their minds. I have come to learn to not take it personally. Living very simply in Indonesia for 4.5 years and then coming back to Canada has given me a different perspective as well. I too come from a country of consumerism, materialistic, and also entitlement. I am finding my country complicated now when I think it could be simplified. Indonesians handle things a lot better than Westerners. They are resilient and they are really good at accepting what is. Thanks for this very relatable video! 😊
Thank you! The queuing thing still bugs me - like just being shouldered out of the way at an Indomaret by an ibu for no reason haha. Such a different vibe! And yes the airport thing too - I used to get quite intense airport rage when travelling in Indonesia. As you say, there are too other lovely things about the country to spend too much time irritated about the cultural friction generated. You're so right that they are super resilient and accepting of what is - that's a really perceptive observation. Big hugs to you both xxx
Happy 4-year Anniversary Carly & Agung!!! So sorry I am behind in watching your videos. Just so busy working and am exhausted. I understand needing to get away, take a break. Self-care is important. Take care 🥰
Thank you! So nice to hear from you - but not happy to hear that you're exhausted and overworked. Sending big hugs and hope you can go back home soon xxx
Yeah, i even witnessed a cat that have a weird phallic tail
Hahah hope you got a photo! 🙈
Hi, what is the fastest and cheapest way to go to the Giant Statue of Jesus from Medan Airport. Thanks.
Unfortunately fastest and cheapest are two very different things! Fastest is by private vehicle that can take you directly - the best way would be to hire a private driver for this, then you can stop wherever you like and it's by far the fastest way. It'll still take you a minimum of 5 hours, probably more like 6. Cheapest way is by bus, but expect it to take far longer and involve a lot of playing it by ear and bus swapping as you go!
65k for train ticket? In KAI access app, its just 40k. Or have to buy from apps to get that price?
That’s good to know! This was the price listed at the airport when we came through, but maybe it’s cheaper now 😊
Jam karet next time ya wkwkw
Ya that’s an important one to get used to!
Jesus statue in a Muslim country Indonesia. Amen.

Selemat Malam, Carly & Agung, senang sekali meligst Agung bright & chirper. Wanted 3 come 2 Indonesia but dealing with skin cancer....all my younger days were filled with surf, sun & travel in Hawaii & Indonesia baking in the sun w/o sunscreen, over 40 AKS/solar keratosis removed, BCC on my nose, forehead & neck next for another Moh's surgery. Good 2 c and glad u went to KL, a very cool city with great food, transportation & museums. Love from Cookie
Hi Liz - so nice to hear from you. But so sad to hear that you are dealing with those medical issues. I'm a lot like you and spent decades of my life baking in the sun. Actually when we were in Kuala Lumpur, I went and did a full skin cancer screening because I was worried about a few spots. Luckily they are all fine which is a relief. Sneding good vibes from us to you and hope for your future procedures and hope it's only good news moving forward. Love to you and Cookie. (We also just rescued another kitten - a little grey tabby boy! He doesn't have a name yet). ❤️😻
@@ExploringSumatra Baru dapat dari toko kopi. Banyak orang tua(lake & prempuan) duduk sendiri minum coffee. Outside bank women sitting alone in their cars with dogs & scrolling on their phones. Better 2 get your dopamine with people than phones, this is the beauty of Indonesia! Glad you had a skin cancer screening, it's those pesky, scaly legions known actinic keratosis appearing on my neck & chest and basal carcinoma(had moh's surgery on nose)...Public healthcare must be so good in NZ. Like your stories about KL. Cookie sends love 2 grey tabby boy! Beautiful, fall day, light rain, walking in the woods, best things about US! P.S. I was constantly bombarded with kids in Yoyga and went to many family diners, not to mention numerous road trips in Java & Madura. Never would happen in the US! Stay beautiful & healthy with lots of meows!
Love love love - you looking well and happy - great editing Agung - a nice casual visit with you - I think back now and realise what a shock it must have been for Agung to live in NZ during the covid lockdown - he even got married - a very quiet wedding compared to the colourful events in Sumatra and none of his family with him (just his NZ family ) 💛💚
I think the only thing that really shook Agung was the cold - actually it shook both of us! Sometimes if it's a bit chilly here and Agung opens up the doors and windows to let the cold in, I say "Hey Sheryl, what are you doing!" Because we remember you doing that on days that were so chilly to us in NZ. <3 NZ had it's share of challenges for us but we look back so fondly on our time there now xxx
Ahhh kalian bikin saya kangen Samosir
Maaf bang haha. Come for a visit again! ☺️
3:39 This is actually the difference between Rice Civilization vs wheat Civilization. Even on a sparsely populated island like Kalimantan everyone will behave the same way. When you plant wheat you can do it yourself But not for rice fields. A mad individual could destroy a village's crop yield by blocking the water irrigation channels.
That's a really interesting point, thank you!
