How Did Our Bush Company Tent and Awning Hold Up? We Review It!
365 Days Living Out of The Bush Company AX27 Rooftop Tent and 270XT MAX Awning!
After over 365 days touring Australia in our Isuzu DMAX, we’re sharing our full review of @TheBushCompany AX27 Rooftop Rent and the 270XT MAX Awning. These key pieces of gear have been with us through some of the harshest conditions Australia has to offer, including remote outback camps, rugged off-grid tracks, and stunning coastal stays.
In a marketplace that seems flooded with rooftop tents and awnings, it can be hard to know what to choose - watch to find out whether The Bush Company should, or shouldn't be on your list!
This is an unbiased review - in fact, when we told the Bush Company Team that we wanted to make this video, they welcomed it, and asked us to give you our honest opinion.

    Hi guys just watched your awning and tent vid and enjoyed it very much I have the same tent as you and I love it , I’m 70 years old and still get up and down no worries. The one question I have is have you ever thought of having a caravan or camper trailer or are you happy enough with living in the tent 😊

  • @brad4908

    The transition from the upright fridge to the beveled from of the pantry/modular units, plus all the dead space between the fixed equipment and the canopy is such bad design and inefficient use of volume.

    • @BorderlandExplorers
      @BorderlandExplorers 2 дні тому

      The upright fridge for us was a game changer actually. And we have been able to utilise the ‘dead space’ as storage for those things we don’t use on a daily basis. For living out of a car 24/7 for this length of time, the setup was ideal for us. I’m sure other setups work well for other people and other situations though :)

    Not a major criticism but more of a suggestion (beauty is in the eye of the beholder) only in this case the ear. I’d ditch the corny cliched twangy bluegrass guitar music, every fourbie UA-camr uses it. Search for something different and I know from experience you’ll be surprised what shouldn’t suit actually does. Great entertainment nevertheless, congrats.

    Hi. Looks good and I’m thinking of getting this canopy for my Hilux. How do you find the rear trundle drawer and specifically getting to things at the back of the drawer with access hatch right at the end of the drawer?

    • @BorderlandExplorers
      @BorderlandExplorers Місяць тому

      Hey Sam! Yeah good question. When we were travelling full-time we just kept larger items up the back of the drawer that could still be reached (and that weren’t used a whole lot). Anything little just went into zip up canvas clear top bags that were also still big enough to reach. Anything small would obviously start getting had to reach if it was loose yeah :)

    Hey everyone, thanks for stopping by! One thing we forgot to mention on the video is dust seals. These were VERY good. So good that we had dust ingress coming up the inside of the rear windows in the DMAX on the Oodnadatta Track, but none in the tent. Also, zero issues with water getting through the seals too. They perform very well 😊.

    I'm a professional photographer down here guys and I have hiked this mountain a number of times and over the last three years. I've hiked it about six times and every time I've been clouded and it actually gets really disappointing because you get up there and you can't get a photo I did end up with some amazing shots. The last time I was there coming down the hill but I didn't get anything from the top. It's always an epic feeling. It's actually a really really challenging walk. I wouldn't call it a climb because you don't actually scramble any more. the old track you used to have to scramble a bit but that was unsafe. It's just good to see people still climbing it and enjoying it and yep the old calf muscles are sore for a couple of days afterwards but it's a great feeling to get to the top the last time I climbed it took me about eight hours. That's because I was carrying about 12 kg of Cameron gear and drones and everything else that I had with me to do a shoot.

Would love to go back and try again but by the sounds of what you're saying, might have to plan it really well :p We hadn't done a hike for a while so we found it a little challenging, and even more uncomfortable in the wind and rain haha. Good on you for carrying up so much camera gear!! Hope you have better luck on your next attempt. Thanks heaps for watching :)

      @@BorderlandExplorers you have to get lucky the great southern is unique in that we are in a bit of a rain band here so you just have to get lucky. The problem is if you go up on a perfectly blue day it's quite uninspiring while you get great views you need some cloud cover to get the epic shots but as soon as you get cloud cover it can get very mercury very quickly it is a bit of the drawer really.

    Hey Matty and Em, I’ve absolutely loved watching your D-Max build and travel videos! They've been such a huge source of inspiration for my own build and have given me some awesome ideas for future trips. I was wondering-have you had any issues with your gear along the way? Setting up a vehicle can be pretty pricey, as you know, so hearing your honest thoughts on how everything has held up would be super helpful for anyone planning their own build. Maybe even a quick video on the big-ticket items like suspension, bar work, the canopy, and the rooftop tent? Whether it's failures or just small things that bugged you, it’d be great to hear about. Anyway, keep up the awesome work! I'm really looking forward to your next video.

    • @BorderlandExplorers

      Hey! Thanks so much for watching and following along :) Honestly our big ticket gear items that we have held up so well. This was our first canopy ute setup (came from an old landcruiser setup) so we were actually so happy with how well it went. The canopy, suspension, barwork and tent we genuinely had no complaints with and definitely did the job with what we were putting the car through on our lap. Anything we would change (which there actually isnt too much) would be more from a design setup perspective based on decisions we made not related to product if that makes sense. A big one for us would be water storage. We currently carry 20L in a jerry and 40L in a footwell watertank that is just gravity fed. Would love to figure out a way to carry more in a more convenient location, whether that is somewhere in the canopy or a underbody tank etc. For now though, it's functional. But you would know what it's like, always looking for ways to make camping setups easier so you have more time around those campfires :p I like your idea about the videos - we might look at doing some more review videos in the future

    The Old Grafton Rd tunnel was NOT excavated by convicts. It WAS a contract job by workers. So change your vid title. Cheers. 👍🏻🙏🦘

      Yes you're right, and we did say that it wasn't technically built by convicts in the video. It seems to still be referred to by that name by a lot of people though. Seems to have had many names in the past: The Old Grafton Road Tunnel - The Dalmorton Tunnel - The Convict Tunnel. Using the name The Convict Tunnel just makes it easily recognisable to people :) Thanks heaps for watching!

    Love this place we also only discovered it this year. Did you get to Tommy’s lookout?? It’s possibly one of the best lookouts in NSW, epic scale.

    Great videos & description of some of the tracks around Buller. Good to see the DMax is holding up, but I do cringe watching it roll from side to side, especially on uphill sections. It looks WAY heavy. Probably something to do with having 130kg of Bush Company gear mounted so high up, plus the high-mounted wheel and the gear on your cabin roof. I feel for the little rear diff housing/axle on those underbody shots. I hope it continues to hang together and you can get many miles of trips in your rig. But I hope you've got a switched-on 4WD mechanic who can keep a close eye on the bushings throughout your suspension, taking the weight of the rock'n'rolling. Keep it up guys.

      Thanks heaps for watching :) We get where you're coming from for sure. The tent is definitely heavier than some of the other options out there but we really didn't want to compromise on quality given we were living out of it day in day out. When setting up the canopy we have tried our best to distribute the weight to limit strain where we can. There's definitely a fine line between keeping the setup light (for 4WDing) and carrying everything you need when you're living out of a for a year (for touring). We definitely made sure to get a decent GVM upgrade and good quality suspension done and have made sure to not go overweight when loading the car up. Always something we are trying to keep in mind where we can. You're right though, always important to have a good mechanic keeping an eye on things! Thanks again for following along, we appreciate it! Matty and Em
